Colin Farrell: WTF?

Haven't seen "Alexander," but I heard it sucks a bowl of dicks (all of the pithy newspaper headlines: "'Alexander' not so great," har de har) to no one's surprise. Which got me wondering — has Colin Farrell even been in a successful movie? Has he ever been in a GOOD movie? Why does he look like Bono whenever I see him on TV lately? Why do I care?

sugarpants (sugarpants), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My god man rent The Recruit! It's amazing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It got 3.5 stars in the Chicago Trib

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Meh.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also he was incredible in Phone Booth. God lord, his intensity was just intense.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

His role in Daredevil was kinda crazy.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Tigerland, people. How could we forget his brooding intensity in that?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

his intensity was just intense

That would tend to follow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Minority Report encompasses his entire list of great movies.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That would tend to follow.

He intensifies the way intense follows intensity.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Tigerland was decent, but nothing to rave over. Plus, seeing it would violate my "no more Joel Schumacher movies" rule. And The Recruit just looks lame — sorry. :( :( :(

I still think that anything Colin Farrell's been "good" in would have been equally entertaining with someone else doing the part. He strikes me as overwhelmingly average as an actor, which to me explains the overcompensating in interviews, paparazzi photos, etc. I think he knows he makes a better 'sleb than actor.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I really dislike him, and all the films mentiomed in this thread so far (except Alexander, which I have not yet seen), so a resounding Dud from me.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

supposedly he's fucking paris hilton now. I hope they have offspring.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

he may have been okay in phone booth but i got bored and walked away. and i don't do that very often.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tigerland is Joel Schumacher's best film. Take that as you will.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Tigerland! Colin was v good in it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you realize he directed st. elmo's fire right?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Lost Boys - both are much better than Tigerland.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife and I were just talking about Colin Farrell last night (I have no idea why) and I remember telling her that Tigerland was the first and last time Farrell impressed me as an actor. The fact that Joel "I Can Fuck Up an Anvil" Schumacher directed it makes it even more of a coup.

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched Alexander yesterday and though I'm no real fan of Mr Farrell or Oliver Stone, I thought it was really prerry good. These epics usually have me shifting around my seat and bored aboout halfway through when I see them on the big screen.

Perhaps some sort of right wing anti-gay agenda is trying to slate it before Aleander's bisexual antics corrupts the young. These days nothing would surprise me. Most of the criticism seems to be that the movie is too camp.

Paul Kelly (kelly), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My criticism is that it isn't camp enough!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant to classify Minority Report as Farrel's best flick (although I have yet to see Tigerland). And best, naturally, is relative. It was still a crap movie for which I soon regretted plunking down the first-run theatre cost of admission.

I love how H'wood cyclically latches onto the "Bad Boy" du Jour and just keeps plugging him into movie after movie.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My criticism is that it isn't camp enough!

neither is tigerland. i realised halway through it i would have been better off watching some proper gay military porn.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Screw Farrell, when's the Heath Ledger/Jake Gyllenhaal cowboy luvfest coming out?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not soon enough: "TBA 2005"

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Screw Farrell, when's the Heath Ledger/Jake Gyllenhaal cowboy luvfest coming out?

Woah, wait what? Tell me more I must know!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He was okay for the 5 seconds he was in Quills.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I just thought he was, IMDB doesn't seem to think so.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

he was fine in interMission. though the concept of colm meaney pushing him around took some suspension of disbelief.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

hollywood's got some sinister interest in farrell, must be why this total lump keeps getting cast in "good" roles and drooled over by directors

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He's very.. watchable. I liked his role in Minority Report largely because it was just A Goverment Agent, played straight. He was one of the few good things about Daredevil, due to being so over the top. And he is really good in interMission, which I appreciate many have you haven't seen.

I suppose I'm mentally comparing him to Tom Cruise, Will Smith etc, and he does well there by virtue of having a semblance of life.

I saw The Recruit on a plane, and I was thinking "I'm willing to bet I'd enjoy his scenes even if I had the sound up." He's just watchable. But then there appeared onscreen a reminder that there was once a very watchable actor called Al Pacino who also didn't care what films he appeared in...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

has angelina jolie ever been in a good movie?

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha S1ocki, have you seen he's going to be playing opposite Jamie Foxx in the Miami Vice movie - BY MICHAEL MANN?

He's in The War Zone! Which I still haven't watched despite getting it as a gift four years ago.

Is A Home At The End Of The World (AKA his other gay film, he's actually gay this time honest) any good?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

has angelina jolie ever been in a good movie?

You mean Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie? Not that I'm aware of. Playing a caricature of a caricature in Sky Captain's about as good as it's going to get for her, I suspect.

Apart from asassin-fest Mr and Nrs Smith, she's also gonig to be in Love And Honor. Plot summary from IMDB:

Plot Outline: An American envoy is sent to Russia to persuade Catherine the Great from joining the British in the American Revolution. The story also explores her love life.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Sky Captain!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

X-post.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is A Home At The End Of The World (AKA his other gay film, he's actually gay this time honest) any good?"

Is it true that they took out the nude scenes from that film because test audiences found his equipment... distracting?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

he's never been the worst thing in his movies. he was great in tigerland, and good in phone booth, and hilarious in daredevil (take note- this is what a dublin accent actually sounds like). he was good in intermission, and fine in minority reprt. all of which, in one way or another, are pretty good movies for my part.

haven't seen the rest, but everyone has their stinkers. i would rather see farrel than jude law/will smith/robin williams/damaffleck if it's worth anything, while preferring clooney/depp/pitt/pacino.

but then, de niro bores me in a lot of his films, what do i know?

d.arraghmac, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Intermission is a good film. and Colin Farrell is good in it.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the d00d from Intermission used to work in my mom's office

fcussen (Burger), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude saved Daredevil.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the Robbie williams of cinema. So, so pretty. One day he'll make a brilliant comedy.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

has angelina jolie ever been in a good movie?

Now that you mention it, I'm having a little trouble. Gia, maybe?

Formerly Lee G (Formerly Lee G), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

When I get elected god of this town, my first act in office will be to go back through history and replace Colin Farrell in all his film roles with WILL Ferrell, and thus secure my place in history as BEST GOD EVER.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina Jolie seems cursed to give good performances in shitty, horrible movies (Girl Interrupted, that one where she's the blonde newscaster lady who gets told by Monk that she's got 7 days to live, etc).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He was the only good thing about Daredevil, for reals. But then I'm an idiot for even attempting to watch Daredevil in the first place. I mean, Ben Affleck? What was I thinking???

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

colin farrell = way way way hawt.

call that "watchable" if you'd like, it doesn't matter what that boy does, i just like staring at him. SWAT was an ever-loving piece of shit, and yet, i've seen it TWICE! and he was extra hawt when he played jesse james in that cowboy movie. i drool.

ol' felcher, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

God, he's awful - the most smackable face since Russell Crowe. Ick.

supposedly he's fucking paris hilton now.

Doesn't he know where she's been???

Jesus Christ, Paraplegic (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Mark, I think at this point their competing crotch fungi will duel each other to a standstill.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalish, let me know when you're on the "god of this town" ballot. I will totally vote for you. I would love to see Will Farrell in the Alexander costumes. And making out with Britney Spears for the paparazzi.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
HE IS IN MY FUCKING TOWN!

I know I shouldn't be starstruck but I really am. I already knew he was going to film here - In Bruges - but today I was standing in the magazine shop and on one of the covers of the newspapers it said he was already checking out Bruges.

I dunno, he's not a consistently great actor, but, after Miami Vice, you gotta admit the guy has some talent. He doesn't always use it, sadly, but when he does, he's an amazing actor.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Argh, crap, I wanted to use HTML code so that "He's in my fucking town" would be dripping with drool all over yr screens but alas it isn't allowed. uh uh uh

ten months pass...

I saw two movies yesterday and wound up catching THREE DIFFERENT TRAILERS FEATURING COLIN FARRELL beforehand. All three were ensemble pieces, which at least implies producers are realizing he can't carry a movie, but still...WHUH?

Also, all three involved guns, all involved crime, and at least two involved drama between brothers. one was a comedy, but not the one directed by Woody Allen. All looked like shit.

da croupier, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

The one with Brendan Gleeson looks horrible – he's playing Judge Reinhold or something.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Seeing two films (Redacted, No Country For Old Men) that were retreads of material the directors did better about 20 years ago preceded by three Colin Farrell trailers should have been more depressing than it was, but I was in a pretty good mood.
