I was already on the verge of getting a HDD DVD recorder anyway, but now I need to buy another VCR first to both maintain access to my video collection, and to have something to play them on when I end up burning all the best bits to DVDRs.
Can anyone recommend a decent new VCR for under £100? Any more than that and I'll have to put off buying the HDD for Christmas!

The Philips one I'm replacing has:Nicam4-headsLong playVideo Plus
All of a sudden, all the VCRs I can find are either cheap 'n' crap or stupidly expensive.

In the process of digitizing our family VHS tapes
On the back end of this lovingly spliced together scenes from my childhood are 1) 5 minutes of a kung-fu movie followed by 2) the credits for News Hour with Jim Lehrer

The VCR ate a tape so I had to take off the top and carefully unwind the caught tape
Think I lost about 5 seconds of me in a rolly chair
Terribly technology

hey 龜, what do you think of the newly evocative aura of bleariness generated by an aged vhs; how does it feel to watch footage accentuated by its medium's deterioration, with shifting reds & diminished membranes?

I'm warming up to it but my main thoughts have been how people tolerated VCR technology for so long and the gap between VHS and the cinema
Think with DVD you started to be able to approximate somewhat the movie theater
But VHS is so... bad... you have to try to reimagine it on its own terms if you want to aestheticize it
There was a trailer before the main feature on my Die Hard 2 VHS tape for Miller's Crossing
Felt singularly weird to me as someone who got into the Coens only post-DVD
Somehow it is absurd that their movies were even available on VHS

I still remember in the waning days of VHS there was a website devoted to letterboxed films available on VHS and in opposition a troll site devoted to claiming letterboxing was a scam.

I remember pan & scan vs letterbox in the context of figuring out which Star Wars edition to get

I knew a guy who was only convinced by letterboxing when he was shown a movie in pan n scan and letterboxed and in the latter Patricia arquette's nipple was visible (lost highway? True romance?)
