So (referring to recent ad campaign here), what do these Miller Lite converts expect from Budweiser? Reparative justice?

I hate negative campaigning. Whatever happened to people drinking and laughing and Eric Clapton or Huey Lewis singing or whatever?

NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) - Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc has agreed to be acquired by rival InBev NV for $49.91 billion in a deal that will create the world's largest brewer, the Wall Street Journal said on Sunday.
Belgium-based InBev plans to pay $70 per share for Anheuser, the No. 1 U.S. brewer, the Journal said. It sweetened its original bid of $65 per share after the maker of Budweiser rejected it in favor of its own cost-cutting plan

Budweiser - I just love their jingle, when they bring out the cart and Clydesdales out onto the field of Busch Stadium, the signature bowtie and oath on every beer can, the way just seeing the word "Budweiser" in that classy font lit up on a highway billboard makes me proud to be in America.

I mean, yeah the beer tastes like piss and drinking more than 16 ounces will give you a roundhouse hangover that will make you shit the bed, but besides that, it's an American tradition.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

Pshaw, you are rong about 18 oz being the hangover limit. Rong by a whole six-pack, actually.

Laurel, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

I learned today that Michelob (regular, not light) is the only American macro that still uses 100% real malt and not substitutes, so drink that stuff if you want a "real" American beer.

A friend pointed out that "someday, the only actual American beers will be micros" -- quite an interesting thought.

watery domestics don't give me NEARLY the hangover that a craft beer will. not sure if it's the water content or how my body processes the cheaper rice beers vs wheat beers.

over the past 11 years, i've had thousands of beers. i've hard beers made with wild yeast, i've had beers that were more than 30% abv, you name it. i've probably tried every commercially available unfiltered ipa brewed in new york city.

however, sometimes i still crave the consistency of an original budweiser. king of beers? it's not for me to say. but i will say that enjoying a budweiser, in bed, reading long paranoid twitter threads about jeffrey epstein makes me feel like i'm part of a great american tradition.

I find it perfect for beef and veg stews and don't mind drinking it either, it's cheap and isn't as good as Budvar obv, but it'll do.

For supping I'd completely agree, but bud edges it for beef stews. I used to often get a four pack of Heineken on the way home from Selby and when the van invariably hit traffic jams on M62 there wouldn't be any left for later Ron!

Prefer Bud Lite if given choice

June Pointer’s Valentine’s Day Secret Admirer Note Author (calstars), Sunday, 10 November 2019 12:45 (six years ago)

One line I’ve heard multiple times from bearded craft beer dorks about Budweiser is “Y’know, it’s not my thing, but hat’s off to the brewmasters managing the consistency of that beer at such massive volume. That’s no easy task.” I mean, sure, probably true, but was there some documentary that beardo IPA dudes all watched? I’ve heard it at least three times and it’s always about Budweiser. I’m sure that’s the case with any mass produced beer?

circa1916, Sunday, 10 November 2019 19:00 (six years ago)

Your craft beer dorks are dilettantes, the original consistency-in-lager prize goes to Carlsberg. Every other large scale lager operation is just a Carlsberg copy

all inexpensive mass produced beer is fine as long as it's ice cold. I live in nyc and also sometimes guiltily crave dominos pizza instead of a bib gourmand one.

wrong, Corona and Bud Light and Michelob Ultra are utter shit

El Tomboto, Monday, 11 November 2019 01:54 (six years ago)

Don't they also always taste the same? I'm not getting the surprise here about "consistency".

maffew12, Monday, 11 November 2019 01:58 (six years ago)

Michelob I don't know. But Corona and Bud light are fine ice cold. they are refreshing like seltzer. I don't think anyone drinks it for depth of flavor.

Yerac, Monday, 11 November 2019 02:08 (six years ago)

I am not a fan of lager in general, it just always tastes like a series of conditions.

Yerac, Monday, 11 November 2019 02:12 (six years ago)

lol, conditions?

I've made beer from grains at home around 50 times now and I can admire consistency in the end product... but I have to think at some point that is something you can buy.

I do enjoy a good Newfoundland sort of equivalent of a Bud at a bar, sure (brewed by our fine local branch of Molson Coors Anheuser-Busch InBev SABMiller). You can count on it and it's refreshing. Making lagers is annoying. They take twice as long as an ale, there's more you can frig up, and they kinda suck.

brewers famously respect budweiser for the consistency of the product.

bud heavy isn't really around much in the circles i run in but there are plenty of adjunct lagers i will happily consume. they pair well with tons of foods from around the world and are an unfailing, uncomplicated refresher if it's hot, if you've been working hard, or if you just need to sit and do nothing important for 30 minutes.

call all destroyer, Monday, 11 November 2019 02:43 (six years ago)

great adjunct lager memories in no particular order

- carib and presidente on the beach during my honeymoon in the usvi
- drinking efes, turkey's adjunct lager of choice, as a nightcap after long days of exploring istanbul
- tsing taos underage in boston's chinatown
- hours of bud lights for survival purposes at close friends' bachelor parties
- asahi poured fresh from a backpack keg contraption at a hanshin tigers game

Chang and Singha and Tiger (or Oly or Rainier or High Life or Lenies...) poured over ice and paired with various SE Asian foods and any random cheap lager with sushi (except Corona which is terrible) are two of my favorite food / beverage pairings ever.

joygoat, Monday, 11 November 2019 04:08 (six years ago)

The only good thing about Texas is that Shiner is perfectly fine in every situation - good for sitting around a fire, cooking, 119-degree summer afternoons. All the non-standard flavors are terrible, though and the Shiner Christmas beer is particularly egregious, tastes like canned potpourri.
