he was kind of a cool cat, wasn't he? watching/reading all the tributes to him today made me nostalgic for "last spike"-style canadiana!

Yup. There were some RIP messages in the Precambrian Shield thread, but I suppose he deserves a thread of his own. I've enjoyed what I've read of him, and also enjoyed watching his tips on joint-rolling.

The joint rolling segment he did for the "Monday Report" was awesome. A great man and a great Canadian. RIP.

RIP. That canadiana is definitely on the way out, for better or worse, since Trudeau's death and the end of the PC's. y'know, "The Land Is Strong" etc.

All the canadian history I do is social revisionist stuff, so I've never actually read any of his books. I mean to, eventually, but the 'other side', so to speak, is a lot more fun at the moment.

Also: I've only read The Last Spike and -- I think it's called The Mysterious North or something, early essays about the very North -- are there any other recommendations? I've been thinking about reading his gold rush book.

Chris, it's not what you asked for, but you'd like George Melnyk's work if you're still into Saskatchewan. search for 'New Moon at Batoche: reflections on the urban prairie'

I really hope people like Melnyk get the acclaim that Berton got, one day.
