Since my favourite simcity site seems to be gone, can we have an ILX simcity4 thread?

oh, I certainly do know!

Although I haven't visited it in a while, so thanks!

does anyone else play simcity, though?
Also I just discovered that said site is, in fact, back up.
hurrah!

hey dudes. anyone know where i can get a copy of simcity 2000 or 3000 for mac??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

surely it must be abandonwarez by now?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

I know there's a Flash or Java version of SimCity Classic on the EA simcity website you can play for nothing, but I think it only works on a windows machine.

I'm just hunting thru www.simtropolis.com to see what I can find in the forums.

Did you not wanna try SC4, amst? Its a reallygreat leap, and Aspyr have made a mac version, I think even the Rush Hour expansion is on Mac now. Not too well supported tho, thanks for nothing as usual EA.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

(I dont think sc3000 would be abandonware, its too recent a version)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

I must big up Simtropolis as a SC4 site though - its fabulous. The guys on there are very talented and have made so many buidlings and mods for the game, you'd never want to go back to the out of the box version again.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

i don't actually want to play the game very much, i just had a bit of nostalgia. i found sc2000 on abandonware.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 29 April 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I'm just such a huge SC4 fan I would recommend it over any other version, but it really is a big game to get into, and you need a hefty pc for it. Worth it if you really get off on this stuff tho.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Wow simtropolis wow! http://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=60749

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

(That's a thread for people's best cities - sometimes it is sorta showoffy and whatever but sometimes SO WOW.)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Oh hell yeah, arent they a bunch of magnificent bastards? :) Pity the site is so damn image intensive.

But yeah.. I know a fellow Melbournite who is replicating Melbourne in SC4 and people have made actual Melb buildings and everything. They're even working on a game mod to make trams (which bafflingly got left out of the game) to run on roads, so European/Aus cities can be made better.

It makes me want to learn GMax/3DSMax so I can make stuff too.

Now if only they could make proper curved round roads...

God I love this game.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Sadly the rise of the Sims means it will never get any better, I think Will Wright has given up the ghost on it.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

PS I heart you Greg :D

I think i might buy the mod cd from simtropolis. i know i can just download all the stuff but i can't keep up with all those damn dependencies.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

Thats an idea yeah. When they started with all those farm mods that needed certain buildings and the whole mod reward path thing, I lost track completely, though I did get a few of the cool farmer's markets and stuff (farms are so much nicer looking with simtrop mods than normal).

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 10 December 2005 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's the mod reward path that is screwing me in keeping up with dependencies. I'm missing something in commerce too, i keep getting bars that have that big simcity4 box over it rather than the graphic meaning i've missed some dependency somewhere.

I haven't really played it in months so i figure this might be like a little mini-expansion pick-up to make me want to play again.

E3 trailer for the revived SimCity:

I like that they've added the tilt-shift thing to the camerawork. This is the first game I've ever seen work that in.

Fiendish Doctor Wu! (kingfish), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

I was gonna revive this a while back, guess I forgot. SC5 looks awesome. I've been playing sc4 again in anticipation.

Beta 's out. Check yr email for a code if you signed up.

Because EA/Origin are re-learning the mistakes Valve did 8-9 years ago, it'll take you a while to authenticate.

My excitement was dulled just a little bit by the truly terrible TV ads for this.

well once this started working it's pretty cool. anyone? BLIFIL on origin

adam, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)

can't wait for the mac version to come out. this looks great. i love how they're simplifying it - roads provide the skeleton for power and water, rather than having to switch to the underground view and route it everywhere. and zoning is condensed to just a single type for R, D and C, rather than R-1/R-2/R-3 etc. the density is determined by the density of the roads. and speaking of roads, they can finally bend and curve in realistic way! Looking forward to building an inefficient curvy town.

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 14:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah I'm pretty stoked for this, but also waiting for the mac version.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

the small map size is offputting at first until one (or at least i) realizes that it's more about cultivating this weird utopian high-density, high-income ideal than about massive sprawl. building and road upgrades maximizing space, working with other cities in the region to coordinate stuff like garbage or fire protection, it's an interesting approach.

i'm not sure yet but i think the simcity universe conceives of capitalism as a non-zero-sum game in which everyone can be high income? so the player doesn't feel bad developing ludicrous high-income beachfront condos while low-income residents choke on sewage fumes over by the railroad tracks?

adam, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

hey, is it possible to do a password protected region? or an invite-only region? if so, we should create an ILX region. i won't be there for a while (until mac version comes out), but i'll definitely be picking it up on day 1 when it's out, and it'd be awesome to collaborate with ya'll

( ( ( ( ( ( ( (Z S), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

cosign re ILX region + waiting for mac release

Mordy, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

SimCity comes out of the city-planner's playbook. Its universe is only concerned with the local population's well-being. It doesn't get into the mechanics of global capitalism or wonder where its raw materials come from. It is enough that they appear when summoned, like spirits from the vasty deep.

Aimless, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

If you want a little global capitalism mixed in there's always Tropico!

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

fps's better simulate global capitalism

Mordy, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

kinda interested in this, but a bit put off by the required-to-be-always-online DRM scheme leading to instant launch problems

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

yeah I'm gonna wait until they iron that shit out

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 19:56 (twelve years ago)

last night for like half an hour it was all "unable to claim your city. please try again later."

the music is great, it's like getting an erotic massage in a dentist's office.

THE CITIES ARE TOO DAMN SMALL.

Thats my only gripe so far. But I'm once again mired in city addiction... le sigh. Here's my carny town!

If I can work out a way to invite specific ppl to a region I might ask you guys to come wreck up the place. Still learning the ropes.

Got the guy I'm seeing into it hardcore, which has upset him because he has no internet access, so he cant play his own copy. And how fucking stupid is that?

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Friday, 23 August 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

Ive also had zero issues with any server connection stuff, Im glad I waited til the major bugs were fixed up.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Friday, 23 August 2013 01:26 (twelve years ago)

despite all the complaints about this game i still can't wait for the mac version to be released later this month!

Z S, Friday, 23 August 2013 01:54 (twelve years ago)

Lets start dat ILX region once you do! Man this game is already ruining my life haha. Ive skipped band practice, I havent cleaned up the house in days. Gah.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Friday, 23 August 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

me too - i'm in for mac edition

Mordy , Friday, 23 August 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

I recommend some of the expansion doodads too - theyre only $10 each, and theyre great fun, esp the Evil Henchman/Superhero one. Tho MaxisMan is a bit useless so far, he's just driving around giving sick people lifts to the hospital :/

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Friday, 23 August 2013 04:23 (twelve years ago)

I'm definitely in if we're doing an ILX region

polyphonic, Friday, 23 August 2013 04:28 (twelve years ago)
