Or is buying both seperately much better?

You're talking about a player, right? My opinion is, if you do get one, buy a Panasonic, as they tend to make the effort to make the VCR part not a total piece of junk.

I got a multi-region DVD player for my new place out of Richer Sounds last week for £26. You can get the same one on Amazon for £30. It works good, and is pretty much as slick as the multi region one I have back at my parents which cost much more 4 years ago now. So I'd vouch for buying seperately. Often the big companies don't have a multi region option, which is just no good at all really.

one will break before the other

There's a new generation of these players that actually have a DVD recorder bundled with the VCR component, instead of just a DVD player. This means that you can actually DUB your old videotapes to a DVD before they finally give up the ghost, instead of just playing them until they do.

How much are they?

About $350-500 US, depending on which brand and what featureset.

I have a Sony DVD/VCR - supposedly one of the better models according to some online review - and it sucks. Doesn't play PAL DVDs, doesn't play MP3s. Doesn't fucking stop rewinding/forwarding when you press Stop. Doesn't show the tape counter by default.
...But it works better with an old TV that only has a coax input.

I have a cheap VCR and a cheap DVD that work much better.

O Gadget Guy, is there a brand/model that you recommend?

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

MY FAVOURITE BRAND IS BIG AND SHINY

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Pros:
Less space needed and less cabling

Cons:
One device breaks = both out of commission
Less choice of features
Usually lesser quality than individual players of comparable (total) price

Other things, too, which I forget.

My gut says go for separate unless you're certain otherwise.

Especially seeing as you can now get hifi VCRs for like $100 because no one wants them anymore. Which reminds me, I need a new one - mine still plays tapes fine but the TV channel receptors are blown so I cant record anything.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah buy separate. Combi anything av usually sucks.

Too right I used to have a TEAC combi TV/VCR I rented off Radio Rentals and they had to replace it at least 3 times!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Then again TEAC are shit.
