If there is anything going to make someone feel "Well, at least I'm not like Those ..."

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

wow. i truly did not realize people were so mean spirited. that was quite disgusting, and i only read a page or two of the responses.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

wow. i truly never realized how mean spirited people are, that was horrible. and i only read a page or two. i don't get it.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago)

oops.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I know this is really bad, but I cannot read those doofus responses without hearing a hick yank accent. Not even if I try really hard.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Forget this rubbish, let's talk about the Star Wars kid. He's funny.

C-Zar, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

dude this WAS the Star Wars kid

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 18:47 (twenty years ago)

what's the backstory.. is the journal essentially a guy who's just way too dramatic or something?

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

here's the feature from something awful:

Awful Link of the Day

Countdown to Oblivion (thanks rambo) - Some guy claims he's going to off himself on January 13th. I guess it's our job, as Internet citizens, to say insincere crap along the lines of "no, don't do it!" and "you have so much to live for!" Frankly, I think the guy is obligated at this point to put a bullet through his head in a couple weeks or so. He started a page saying "I'm going to kill myself on January 13th," so I think it's only fair of us to expect the deed to be done on that date. Let me tell you something, Jerry: if you don't kill yourself, you're a complete pussy. You've got nothing to live for. Nobody likes you. There aren't any websites dedicated to stopping you from killing yourself, and even if they were, they would be crammed full of animated gifs showing chubby angels pulling up their diapers and blowing kisses. Your pathetic attempt to sponge up attention on the Internet has failed and the only way you'll ever gain the approval you so richly demand is if you actually grow a set of balls and kill yourself. THEN you'd be cool and everybody would accept you for the deep and emotionally complex individual you clearly are. You know, because dead people are awesome.

"My name is Jerry Romero, and I am 23 years old. If you have found this journal, it is through your own actions. I will not comment on other entries in an attempt to make friends. I am leaving this in the hands of Fate and no-one else. This journal was created solely for the purpose of providing one last lifeline in a vast sea of hopelessness.

On January 13th, I am going to kill myself.

I am going to be posting daily about my fears, anxieties, and state of mind. If, in the month I have allotted, someone shows that they truly care, I will not take my life. This may seem odd to some people. Hell, it even seems odd to me. But even though I do not want to live, I need to know if someone can care. If someone could reach across the void of chance and make contact, I will consider it a sign that someone (God, Allah, anyone) does not want me to die. "

Well Jerry, consider this website to be the hands of Fate, and they're flipping you the bird. Nobody on the Internet truly cares, and if you're so gung-ho about dying, then be a man, Hogan, and get it done. We already have enough attention whores on the Internet, and at least they show us their tits.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:02 (twenty years ago)

even if this guy is just crying for attention, its still pretty reprehensible to egg him on like that.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

exactly. and since when is a cry for attention something to be abused for? is it so hard to fathom that maybe he hasn't gotten enough attention, especially the positive kind. i wonder if these people who are responding so harshly to him would do the same to someone threatening to jump off a bridge or building.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Well, in a way, the somethingawful people may have been his saviour, as I doubt any of us would have even heard of the poor guy had somethingawful not stepped up to the bad guy plate. Now the guy *is* going to get all those caring e-mails just due to the publicity that the somethingawful prank has caused.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Now he's actually taking a stand against the somethingawful bastards, which is good.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago)

This summer, shortly before my own suicide attempt, a guy I had dated, his new girlfriend and some other ignorant friend of his whom I had insulted began an entire hate blog against me. I was incredulous that these people loathed me so much and that they had that sort of spare time.

Never underestimate the cruelty of your fellow human.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Bizarre. I clicked on the link and the journal was still there--I refreshed and it said it was deleted.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what else you'd expect. He wanted attention, surely he knew that plenty of it would be of this kind? On the internet it only takes a small group of motivated people to make a particular message heard.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Might cruel mockery sometimes be a manifestation of and a twisted vent for a genuine resentment towards the act of suicide and the fact that some people out there want to kill themselves despite being considerably better off than so many other people out there who cling to whatever life they have and thank some higher power they still have it?

As for me, I've never been so terrified of death.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago)

When I went to his journal the first time I couldn't work out if it was real or not - it's just the kind of thing an art student would love to concoct. I guess now it's been deleted, it was more likely real. Either way, I don't understand the mindset of posting nasty shit there. Thinking it maybe, but going to the trouble of typing it out and posting it... is odd.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Also I believe it's quite unlikely that he actually will kill himself. People that actually succeed in killing themselves rarely do it for the attention (as this guy seems to be doing), and often it's a spur-of-the-moment decision born out of long-term depression. (As someone who's almost been there several times, you that you don't tell anybody about it if you're actually serious.)

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

His page is gone.

Homo homini lupus est

At least he's getting attention. The worst would be total indifference.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Gone? I can still get to it.

Personally, while I think SA is a massive pile of elephants leavings, this guy was very very stupid to think making a public LJ about this would get him anything but mockery! Come on, anonymous cowards live to pillory guys like him. What'd he expect?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Hey guys! Let's spam SA's forum and try to convince the guys there that they should all go jump off a f'ing cliff!!

If you've got $10, go right ahead.

I gave it to you for the new server ;(

The SA posters sound reprehensible, but parts of the SA story have some truth to them - "I guess it's our job, as Internet citizens, to say insincere crap along the lines of "no, don't do it!" and "you have so much to live for!""

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I disagree. If this guy was on the brink, insincere crap won't take him back. (NB: my own experiences may not be the same as yours). Wouldn't the fact that he's only getting the "don't do it" from people he doesn't know maybe emphasise the fact that he's in a bit of a whole, perhaps bereft of real people to say it - which is far more likely to be of assistance?

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

In my experience, if you want to do it, nothing anyone at all says is going to change that. I really think this guy is doing it for the attention, but I don't see that as a negative thing (just doing it for attention, not killing yourself). He obviously thinks busting out the big S is going to get him the attention he wants. As he put it himself, it blew up in his face.

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to know how people originally got wind of this especially considering the statement in his first post "I'm not going to bring anyone here on my own. If this fails then no-one will ever know the difference, and I might as well be talking to myself..." If he's made no attempt to publicize it on the internet, then someone who knew him personally would have had to have known about it initially and they would've been more likely to do something other than spread it, no? Seems like a goof to me.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago)

That's the point, Edward. They were being sarcastic.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:47 (twenty years ago)

someone probably searched for one of these keywords:

Interests: 16: a cry for help, anger, despair, desperation, drug abuse, drugs, frustration, hate, hope, last chances, mental illness, misfortune, suicidal, suicide, unhappiness, unhappy.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Okay, thanks. I had no idea that Livejournals were searchable. That said, he seems to have made quite a few attempts then to help people find it.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I guess that I can't really criticize that though. If it's legit, then he's already assumed to be uncertain to begin with.
