Was the expression "The luck of the Irish" invented in America?

Was it? For it seems to me that in many ways the Irish have been very unlucky, at least collectively.

Read "The Luck of the Irish" John Lennon.

I think it was invented by the irish, as a 'hey hang with me and it might rub off orn yew mary poppins' sort of thing.

Word Detective suggests that it's an old English expression and that it means a type of luck which seems good at first but then turns out to be bad.

Which seems to make a lot more sense.
