It's kinda Christmas!

So yesterday my computer stopped running applications. It'll actually run winamp with 3 minutes startup (no processin') and weirdly IE instantly, but I can't run any sort of dialler to actually connect to anything or anything else really :/

I ran sfc and apparently the following files look iffy: c:/windows/netstat.exe and windows/system/setupx.dll. Also when I run in safe mode I still do anything, but now I get a message about a missing windows/rundll32.exe file. The sensible thing might be to extract from a win98 cd? Except I have no such thing because ALL OF MY SHIT HAS GONE MISSING WTF. That's not really y'all's problem though.

So yeah! Please please could someone, you?, help me by sending these files? I can burn them onto cdrw on my mum's laptop and I be would mad, mad grateful, I'd owe you forever.

the one with system/setupx.dll is probably ok,( something to do with multimedia function I think ) but the other one - netstat.exe is from a trojan called 'Bat.install' something- or- other.
You need to run an up to date anti-virus scan on your computer to get rid of that one, as it will keep multiplying each time you boot up.
rundll32 - um.............

rundll32 - just had a quick look, and yeah it's a standard system file that can be downloaded free from quite a few sites, incl microsoft.
it should be sitting in amongst your system 32 files 'n folders.

Thanks! I will run a virus scan when I regain the ability to run programs/ access web sites on the machine. (I also searched for bat*.* and couldn't find anything :( )

I also had a look for the dll on the microsoft site but they told me to extract from the cd, which see above, aargh. No-one seems to offer the actual CD-file for download...

that trojan apparently creates and overwrites system files, and Symantec say that you will prob have to re-install windows if it has begun to 'do its thaing'
sorry for the bad news.

I gather you dont have recovery or set-up discs :-(
If you wanna email me your postal address, I can burn & send you a win98 SE copy, with number etc.
I use XP but happen to have a 98 SE disc handy :-)
