Stupid Names for kids

I fucking hate parents who give their kids stupid names, like Everest or Edison, or Timberland.

What are some of the stupidest names for kids you've heard?

(Personally I am going to name my kids Christina Eiríni, Kevin [something], and Andrew Phillip).

Dante, Der Führer (Sean3), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:29 (twenty years ago)

I've going to name my kids Alvin, Simon and Theodore. Then, I force them to eat nuts.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

You need to make sure they suck in helium all the time too. And that one wears glasses

Dante, Der Führer (Sean3), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I met a dude whose first name was Robinson (as in Crusoe).

Also, in the posh town of Westfield, NJ I heard a thin blonde shopping mother call to her blonde son "Come here, Finnbar."

Why are they stupid?

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

The worst is when people give little kids old people names, like OLAF or GERTRUDE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

AGNES or BERTHA

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:08 (twenty years ago)

There was this girl at my high school who named her baby Shinequa Shinishe Shinene Johnson. I thought that was so punk rock. Its like the ultimate "fuck you, white people" name.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I like Agnes. My answer: Madison.

youn, Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Also, in the posh town of Westfield, NJ I heard a thin blonde shopping mother call to her blonde son "Come here, Finnbar."

Westfield is cool! And Finbar was the name of the dwarf in The Station Agent.

for whatever reason, the name Riley annoys me. Throw in all the other trendy names upper-middle class parents are naming their kids these days, too.

craggy jones, Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago)

First names sounding like last names for girls: Madison, Porter, Parker, Wendell, etc. Not so bad on boys, if you want your son to become a Distinguished Businessman or Politician.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I love this website. Apparently Tyler was a more popular name for boys than John last year.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

i kinda like the name Riley for a girl. That's the little girl next door's name, and it really suits her. It's cute.

I met a Tennifer once. Knew a Marvelous. Had a crush on an Orion for about five minutes.

Our kids will be John Owsley or John Cloud for a boy
Bowen or Tatum for a girl

Fine, American names, those.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Interesting data from the SSA website: John was pretty much #1 from 1880-1925, then Robert took over for about 15 years, Robert and James traded off for another 15, and then suddenly Michael ascended to the top in 1955 and hasn't looked back since. (This is all U.S., btw.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

i was gonna be named michael, but fate intervened and i became DUKE IVORY, ELEPHANT HUNTER

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:19 (twenty years ago)

As for the girls, Mary reigned supreme from 1880-1961 (!), except for 1947-52 when Linda took over. After that, you have a series of short-lived champs: Lisa (1962-69), Jennifer (1970-84), Jessica (1985-95, except for Ashley in 1988), and Emily (1996-present).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I was once told if I was going to a party I wasn't invited to I should just say I'm a "friend of Jen's," on the assumption that there was a good chance someone at the party would be named Jen.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Apparently, that is especially true if most people at the party are between the ages of 20 and 34. Which is like every party I go to.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea there were so many 40-year-olds named Lisa, though.

Meanwhile, Madison has hung on for another year as the top name for girls, which as near as anyone can figure comes from the 1984 movie "Splash," starring Daryl Hannah in the role of a mermaid named Madison.

I've noticed a lot more kids are named Alex nowadays. When I was little I didn't know anybody else named Alex. Now whenever I'm out at some public place I often hear someone yelling "ALEXANDER YOU GET HERE RIGHT THIS INSTANT!" and reflexively i turn around and its some mother yelling at her little kid.

America's baby names are slowly but surely becoming the children of Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel. I blame Bush.

http://animatedtv.about.com/library/weekly/aa050101a.htm

Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel is a favorite character among man fans. He is seemingly pulled straight from a comedy routine by Jeff Foxworthy. Below is a few facts and trivia about Springfield's redneck named Cletus.
Name: Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel
Spouse: Brandine
Children: Tiffany, Heather, Cody, Dylan, Dermott, Jordan, Taylor, Brittany, Wesley, Rumer, Scout, Cassidy, Zoe, Chloe, Max, Hunter, Kendal, Katlin, Noah, Sasha, Morgan, Kira, Ian, Lauren, Q-bert, Phil
Pet: Dog named Geech (a "smellhound")

wetmink (wetmink), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Jaidyn is quite a popular name in Australia. About 10 years ago there was a very well-publicised murder case here involving a toddler called Jaidyn, which probably helped put the name in public view. At least one Cadyn has played AFL football.

(Poor little sod Jaidyn's family seemed to have much in common with Clan Cletus the SJY).

How the hell did perfectly respectable names like Max, Ian, Lauren and Phil get onto the Cletus team-sheet? Unless Ian is pronounced 'iron', and Phil is short for Philibuster or Philidelphia, or something else other than Phillip.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Surprised C the SJY hasn't found room for a Chad amongst his brood yet.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 24 December 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why they put those more normal names in there. It is kind of funny though. Maybe because the list starts off with a mix of trendy names and "redneck" names and then is juxtaposed with normal names, so you're thinking "If Cletus named one kid 'Scout', why would he name another one 'Phil'?" Maybe a question for this thread: The List Is Humor At Its Purest

Here's the audio of Cletus reading the names: http://animatedtv.about.com/library/media/audio/cletus/cletus_hey_kids.wav
(Yes I am obsessed with the Simpsons.)

Was the beach in Australia? Apparently "Sheila" means something else there.

Huk-L, Friday, 24 December 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Nope, Fort Funston - south of SF. What does it mean there??

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:22 (twenty years ago)

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Castle.

A coworker today said she likes the name "Castle" for a girl. To which I responded, "Is that a name?" Silence.

Castle, Friday, 24 December 2004 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh-- and fuckin' Thumbalina which this same person also liked.

Castle, Friday, 24 December 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

'Sheila' is a slang term Australians used for 'woman' back in the Bazza McKenzie days. Now a 'sheila' is an Australian woman, but the term is used more outside Australia.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 24 December 2004 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Jaden & Caden? Where the fuck did those names come from? aiden, i bet people got from sex & the city. he was pretty hot. What happenend to, I dunno, Chris, Mike, Joe, John, George?

if i ever have kids, which is somewhat doubtful, i would totally give them like roman names. octavian, augustus, or tibirius for boys. messalina, drusilla, or agrippina for girls.

I love proper names that sound like surnames, but I'd only foist them upon a child if it was their middle name, a la what Mr. and Mrs. Jon Voight did when they named their kids. But, yeah, it's a bit much when the surname-ish proper names are used for actual FIRST names.

It warms my heart knowing that some very nice, "normal" names are still being used widely by parents, such as "Emily", "Paige", "Grace", "Jacob", and "Matthew". They might be accompanied by odder or sadder choices (WTF? "Aalyiah"? The cult of celebrity worship this implies = we are a seriously fucked up society), but hopefully, regular names will always be a part of the popular group.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 24 December 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Hiya Mark.

I looked. I was all geared up for its popularity to have started high in the '60s and steadily died since then (Keith Moon; Keith Richards; Keith err.. Emerson). However, it started in the '50s. How odd.

I'm glad for your association. I hope it's not because of me!

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 24 December 2004 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Posh woman in posh supermarket calling to obnoxious child: "CLEOPATRA come here immediately!"

I read an anecdote once about a woman naming her son Odeon (as opposed to something like Juan) to distinguish him from the other kids on the block so that when she shouted for him he'd know she was calling only him.

Since then I have been threatening to name my children Odeon and Pathe.

I've heard of a lot of Tallulahs in recent years. I can't decide if that name annoys me or not.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 24 December 2004 12:48 (twenty years ago)

it's hard to argue with a name once the child is born. Like, my friend who named her son Moses. He's Moe now - but chances are he'll make a name for himself. My nephew is Augustus, Gus, and i hated it at first. But now he owns the name.
here are the names of children in my life: Gus, Sophie, Sadie, Ruby, Kenzo, Mika, Seneca, Texiera, Rhiannon, See-al-ay, Rufus, Custer, Lowen, Terrin, Maya, Zebulon, Zacharias, Treya, Rose. And John, William, Anne, Se-ah-dum, John, Kevin, Thomas, Patrick, James Margaret, Nathan, and John.
My name is Alison Isobel Murchie. It flows well, donthcha think?
My mother chose our names to honor the clans (Scottish side). i was supposed to be a boy. Ian MacDonald Murchie. Oh well.
My brothers:
Douglas Robertson
Alan Cameron
George Stewart
Ian MacDonald (but no - Alison Isobel)
My fathers middle name was Broadfoot. Yikes!
I have a Revillo on my mothers side (first name); let's hope that one doesn't rear its ugly head.
I had a hard time naming my cat, so i pity the fool who goes around having babies to name.

It's such a dad name.
My dad's name was George. Also a pet/dad name.
Add to that list Harry and...

Kevin, it's certainly not a "bad" name, it just seems very trendy right now. I would say that someone over 30 who has it is actually cool.

A woman I work with has granddaughters named Jensin and Reagan. It makes me cringe a little. I know I have an unusual name, but Jensi(e)n is definately a Scandinavian boy's name and Reagan should be Regan. And she should plot against her father. Note that I haven't translated the name, it is in English even though the kid is Finnish. Also, in Finnish the word "rock" only refers to rock music (and the father's name certainly isn't Rock Senior), and even the local equivalent of the word "junior" is almost never used. I'm not sure whether this the coolest or stupidest name I've ever heard.

Re that Aidan/Jaden/Caden nonsense upthread:

BabyNames.com compiles this annual ranking of the top 20 most popular baby names using the favorite name lists created on the Web site by more than 100,000 expectant parents.

Which seems like maybe not the most accurate predictor. According to the official U.S. stats, Aidan is #39, Jayden is #75, and Caden is #114. (Of course, assuming that BabyNames.com tracks lists created by expectant parents from around the globe, this may just mean that Aidan/Jayden/Caden are more popular outside the U.S.)
