is SCTV not the greatest TV comedy ever?

I'm hugging my Volume 1 and 2 DVDs right now. Volume 3 is coming out in Feb 2005. I'm counting the days, nights, minutes, seconds, nanoseconds.

I really hope Alki Stereopolis will show up on Volume 3.. that and the anti-Falkland War punk band skit... "GOD SIVE THE QUINE! AND HER.. FUUUUUUUUCKLAN' WOOOOOOOOOR MAAAA-SHIIIIIIINE!"

Share with us your favorite characters, actors, actresses, moments, etc.

I found the 1984-take-off episode rather terrifying, though not terrifying enough to make me stop watching. I must've been ten or so.

The whole Dr. Tongue's 3-D House Of series never wore off.

Dr. Tongue's 3-D House Of Pancakes was hilarious.

Count Floyd: "Oooooh, wasn't that SCEH-RY, KEEDS? You know, zee see-rup and zee way eet just.. sneaks up on you like that in 3-D... ahem, um, yes SCEH-RY, AOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW AAAOW AAAOW HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!"

(kingfish, did the store buy the rights to use the Dr. Tongue trademark? That's great!)

I AM Edith Prickley (in male drag).

Actually, I didn't learn until recently that Edna Boil (of Tex & Edna's Prairie Emporium) was born Edna Prickley... she's Edith's sister. I missed the bit where Tex left Edna and Edith showed up to help out at the Emporium. The best thing Martin Short ever did was his bit as Boil Boy at Edna Boil's Prairie Warehouse and Curio Emporium, now expanded to include Boil World, home of Mother Nature's Greatest Mistakes.

Has anyone mentioned the awesome SCTV fan site at http://sctvguide.ca/index.htm ? The episode guide is excellent.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else notice that Martin Short's TV talk show a couple years back was an eerie simulation of his SCTV skit "Stars on One with Brock Linehan"?
But nothing beats Johnny La Rue's Pajama Party -- especially when this week's guest was Alistair Cook from PBS

I recently watched a bunch of episodes on DVD, and I've gotta say, it was a laughter-poor experience. Rick Moranis as Woody Allen and John Candy doing Beaver Cleaver were exceptions.

Honestly, it just feels to me like a poor man's version of the golden years of SNL. But then again, Canada is just a poor man's version of the USA. : p

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You're hurting. Me.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 24 December 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to agree that the first DVD of the Volume 1 set is weak compared to the later ones like the Moral Majority episode, the Christmas Special, and many afterwards. Hurting, it sounds like you saw the first disc, which is them still unrusting themselves from the half-hour "less funny" format they had before. I'd certainly give some of the more well known episodes another chance before calling it a poor version of SNL, which SCTV is definitely not.

SCTV was never live, and, well there are MANY differences between it and SNL. This isn't the best analogy, but...

SNL : Rolling Stones :: SCTV : Velvet Underground

SCTV may have had less popularity, but many people who saw SCTV were inspired to start their own unique comedy careers (Conan O'Brian, MST3K, etc.). Not saying SNL at its peaks wasn't influential, but it has been following the same exact formula since 1975... and SCTV episodes generally had a much better hit/miss ratio. SCTV also eventually ended (in 1984, although many of the actors and actresses went on to greater and lesser things).. whether this is a good or bad thing is up to you to decide.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 24 December 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, Rick Moranis as Merv Griffin... oooooooooooooh!

donut christ (donut), Friday, 24 December 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

...and another Moranis character staple, Gerry Todd, unintentionally invented MTV! Just months before it went on the air, before the NBC deal. But there was one SCTV episode that featured a Gerry Todd video show that did play the entirety of the video to Talking Head's "Once In A Lifetime" and some video by a quirky Japanese pop rock band called The Plastics. MTV was almost a year old then, so it doesn't seem like a big deal, as they probably played both videos first, but I think SCTV gave Talking Heads their break, as this was probably the first time the "Once In A Lifetime" video got a major network/public station debut... remember that MTV had about 300 subscribers total at the time. (OK, maybe not that little, but it was uncommon for cable carriers to have MTV then.)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 24 December 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

...or Rick Moranis as Merv Griffin as Andy Griffith...Aunt Bee, everybody, ooooooooh!

I liked Eugene Levy's acid-casualty Floyd the Barber: "...ah...Andy, don't be so... hard on the boy, he's...just a little...kiiiiiid....."

clemenza, Sunday, 22 April 2018 03:26 (seven years ago)

sketch comedy shows are always pretty uneven and scattershot. sketches are, by their nature, throwaways, based on one or two gags or a premise that can be exposed in 30 seconds. if you don't like one sketch, there will be another along in a couple of minutes. it's not easy, but for that very reason, people forgive a lot of bad filler if there are some good laughs from time to time.

there have been far more situation comedies produced, where there is a chance for character development and storylines. the actors have a chance to act. the writers have a chance to stretch. there is less need for gags. the best have an organic life that is very satisfying, but maybe not as many guffaws.

it's a matter of taste.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 22 April 2018 03:56 (seven years ago)

Which is why I added the "at its best"--SCTV had a long run and various cast members (though it was much more stable than SNL), and to a degree it was one show on Canadian TV and another on NBC. But I think you can take a block of at least a handful of seasons and match it against anything. The best sitcoms have ups and downs too, even in-season. Ultimately it comes down to what's funniest, and of course that comes down to taste. For me, SCTV for a few seasons was funnier than All in the Family or Mary Tyler Moore or Seinfeld or anything.

clemenza, Sunday, 22 April 2018 04:14 (seven years ago)

The only show in the past three decades that's had me laughing until tears came was Whose Line Is It Anyway? I would still hesitate to call it the funniest tv comedy ever.

Far from Moranis at this best, but not bad--he's basically stealing from Bill Murray. (I thought at first he was doing Skip Bittman, but the comments say Gerry Todd.)

I saw The Passion of Anna last night, which prompted me to look up Whispers of the Wolf on YouTube, which led me to conclude that Count Floyd is the greatest metaphor for teaching grade school ever: you hype a topic--"Oooooh, erosion--this is gonna be so interesting!"--it turns out to be stupefyingly boring, you come back and try to pretend it wasn't, then you just kind of throw your arms up and let loose with an "Ah-Ooooooooooh" as distraction.

Still waiting on Scorsese to pull his thumb out and finish it, aiui. I give it less than 1% chance of happening solely under his name. If he'd hand it off to someone else to finish it with a co-director credit, that would be nice. This May will be seven years since the reunion.
