O'Neal said he didn't watch a pregame tribute to him on the videoboard at Staples Center.

But he listened to the crowd reaction.

"I think it was 89.2 percent cheers and 11.8 percent boos," he said, failing to add correctly. "But I'm used to it. It was a fun day. I'm sure the NBA made a lot of money today."

I think I understand the point being made here (ie, there weren't that many boos) but given that the numbers do actually add up to 100 percent, this looks like a really poor attempt at trying to make Shq look stupid.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it adds up to 101, no?

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

89.2 + 11.8 = 101.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks like a really poor attempt at trying to make Shq look not stupid.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a really poor attempt at trying to make dan perry look stupid.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Dan and I don't think he's stupid.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, just for the record and stuff.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well... someone's got to get fired for this.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Dan and I do think he's stupid.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Best thread ever.

Dan Perry, YOU'RE FIRED

Donald Trump (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Bear in mind that one of the trickiest editing judgement calls is whether or not, and if yes, how to edit a person's quote. This probably was probably the best way to handle this case.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This probably was probably the best way to handle this case.

firing dan?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's Christmas, Mr. Scrooge!

The Ghost of Dan Perry Needs A Handout (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Why didn't Shaq go with the simpler 90%, 10% instead of getting all fancy? Especially since he pulled the numbers out of his ass.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Fire him from a cannon into a pit filled with lusty vixens molded out of Jello, and then I'm all for it.

shaq was flexing his decimals!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

J.lu's probably right. I mean, I sorta hate it when writers insert little snarky asides like that, but at the same time, they have to demonstrate that they realize that the numbers add up to 101, and I'm not sure "[sic]" is appropriate in this case.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the proper way to write it would be "albeit, incorrectly" as opposed to "failing to add correctly."

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Who says the crowd wasn't making 101% noize? And who says Shaq DOESN'T own a decibel meter?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

101% NOIZE.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(new noise board slogan)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The crowd should be ashamed of themselves for only giving 101% instead of the requisite sports-appropriate 110%.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Note: Due to rounding, numbers do not add up to 100"

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry Needs A Handout

I read handout as handjob at first glance.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Cutty's right about the "albeit."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

did you have to say "actually" just there?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, because earlier I agreed with J.Lu and now I'm agreeing with you.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to convey that I deliberated on the issue and didn't just randomly flip-flop.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

true.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaq should have claimed it was "93.2 percent cheers and 16.8 percent boos" so that when someone pointed out the error he could say "the people in Staples Center always give 110 percent!"

miccio (miccio), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Are those favors from Bush's campaign?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 27 December 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha they should be! I can't think of a better image for Bush's campaign than a grubby foot stomping all over the American flag.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn it, Rumsfeld, when I said I wanted to see you in a star-spangled thong...

(nb DO NOT DO A GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH FOR "lusty vixen" AS YOU WILL BE IN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PR0N HELL) (or heaven, as the case may be)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone should compile all the Dan Perry "Do not do a google image search for" items.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what you get when you put "headless chick" into the Google image search.
-- Dan Perry (djperr...), May 1st, 2003.

DO NOT DO A "woman unibrow" GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH IF YOU ARE AT WORK
-- VengaDan Perry (djperr...), March 26th, 2004.

I was going to do a "bunny cunny" image search but then remembered 1) I'm at work and 2) I still have vestiges of shame.
-- Dan Perry (djperr...), March 14th, 2003.

Okay, this Google Image Search result for "dog freak" has ruined my day.
-- VengaDan Perry (djperr...), August 23rd, 2004.

My latest reason for wanting to kill: page 2 of the google image search for "red tank". FUCK YOU TOM SOUTHERN SOME OF US ARE AT WORK.
-- VengaDan Perry (djperr...), May 7th, 2004.

First hit for a Google image search for "haribo" (ESSENTIALLY NSFW AND ALSO EW EW EW)
-- VengaDan Perry (djperr...), August 31st, 2004.

(the word "faux" always brings to mind the word "fur", which in this context turned into "furries" which almost led to the worst Google Image search ever)

-- The Ghost of Dan Perry (djperr...), October 26th, 2004.

(You really don't want to know what Google Image search returns as the top search result for "Bert & Ernie", especially if you are at work.)
