The Richard Pryor Show : C/D?

Holy shit.. best Xmas gift (to myself) ever. (The 3 DVD set, that is)

This is the true precursor to Dave Chapelle, without the meandering fidgetty studio audience part of Chapelle's show.

"BLACK METAL!" Any skit where a funked out metal band in Screamin' Jay Hawkins/Mentors/George Clinton uniforms kills its entire audience throughout the entirely of the skit can't not be completely fucking funny. I can't believe a major network in 1977 let this air. I'm blown away.

(also I had no idea this was where Robin Williams and Sandra Bernhardt got their start)

six years pass...

i just started watching this. six episodes only, right?

This is the true precursor to Dave Chapelle

yes, this was the first thing i thought of. also a few echoes of "louie" insofar as pryor was totally unafraid to have long stretches of no lols but just straight drama, i.e. the WWII lounge act sequence

completely blown away by what a canny, precise actor pryor was

god, sandra bernhardt was gorgeous

Saw this on NBC in '77.

Bought the set at Amoeba SF about 4 years ago. Haven't watched it yet.

it's maybe the best TV sketch comedy i've seen. edgier than any comedy on TV now by far. so ambitious! one scene has african dancers doing an entire dance from start to finish, maybe 6 minutes or so of just drumming and joyous dancing.

oops, just four eps! each one's an hour, though. and there's a "special" which I haven't watched but apparently co-stars John Belushi.

The roast of Pryor in the last episode is pretty awesome. Paul Mooney was a smooth, good looking motherfucker. GOD DAMN.

And speaking of sexy, MARSHA WARFIELD. JESU CHRISTO.

Still is? Not gonna gis it, but I think I saw a minute-long makeup commercial with her a few months ago and she looked enviably stunning.
