What new things did you try in 2004?

I tried blue cheese (barf), I also tried mushrooms again and came to the sad conclusion that I'm never going to like them. I also tried boogie-boarding which was fun, whale watching which I found emotional, and had my first Tarot Reading which was both surprising and interesting.

I've had my first works appraisal which was amusing, and cooked my own lasagne which was heavy but edible.

Looking back at my wee list, I'm actually surprised by the small but meaningful things I have achieved during the course of one year and this encourages me to try more next year.

Yourselves?

I tried not to be a cunt but largely failed. I'll try again next year.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I left Europe

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago)

On Monday I tried one of those Playstation Dance Mat games for the first time ever and discovered I love them. (I also discovered that my wife can't dance, something I'd been completely unaware of in our 15 year relationship)

I tried programming in PHP for the first time. It's as interesting as it sounds.

Half Life 2 :-)

Black Sheep Riggwelter Beer. Very nice.

Mozilla Firefox. Mostly good apart from plug-in issues and people writing crappy incompatible sites.

Paintballing. Expensive, painful, fun.

Oh, and what Markelby said :-)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I also tried to manage my finances. The result was nothing to be proud off.

I tried some new beverage I found in Safeway called Mississippi Steamer, it was my favourite drink for two weeks but I'm rather sick of it now.

Rumpster Pumpster, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Horse + pig's ears. Using the telephone assertively. Dried milk. Borlotti beans. Bromley. What a year, eh?!

alix (alix), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I tried a new job for the first time this millenium, and found out that not only did I enjoy it but am quite good at it.

Going to a work conference. Away from home. With people I didn't know. For two days. And not making a tit of myself.

Leaving pubs sober.

I tried to get into the habit of wearing smarter clothes and make-up more often. That lasted about two days before I realised I'm one of these people who just doesn't do smarter clothes and make-up. I have enough effort getting myself out of bed and clean in the morning without hassling about with slapping extra stuff on my face and doing ironing.

Going up cable cars. Twice. Despite a morbid fear of things that hold me up by a single wobbly rope.

Oh, and what Markelby said. To the letter.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I tried running my own business. Because I sort of had to, not by choice. It has been a pain in the ass, but I suppose I've learned some things from it. And it hasn't led to complete financial disaster just yet (but I have no doubt it will eventually).

Apart from that, nothing new really.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Climbing wall, zip wire and cross-stitch. Not at the same time.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I tried very hard not to be such a fucking flake. It kinda worked, but only kinda.

I also tried to be more of a grown-up, but I think I need to stop using the word "grown-up" in order to achieve that aim fully.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, I'd love to try wall climbing! We have one in an old church in Glasgow - I keep saying I'm going to do it but next year I definitely shall.

Also on the to do list - try skiing and climb Ben Nevis.

Rumpster Pumpster, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Wearing a suit to work (which doesn't make me look very smart at all)
"Doing it" standing-up (which put my back out)
Going on a business trip abroad (which was tedious)
Organising a holiday (which I'm still doing)
Sushi (Which was quite nice)
Writing for a website (Which was also nice but got me the sack)
Getting the sack (Which was wack but got me a nicer job in the long term)
Internet "dating" (Which was interesting)
Noise (Which I love!)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I have learned to like baked beans.

Employing an accountant.

Making smoothies.

Making houmous.

Briefly starting a blog.

Learning a vast amount about interior design in a week (for work sadly, not home).

Trying to play both the drums and the guitar. Despite the efforts of several very patient friends I have no natural talent for either.

Speaking Catalan.

Selling my CD collection.

A fine approach! (As I let go of chunks of mine, with little to no pain.)

Went to a non-English speaking country for more than a quick day visit for the first time. A good experience.

What was it in?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I tried raw brussels sprouts for the first time, which tasted so good to me (my prior exposure to the vegetable involved overcooked and foul-tasting sproutage) that I changed my mind about the vegetable and happily scarfed down a pile of brussels sprouts this past Thanksgiving.

I tried little bits of cheese here and there and understood that my decades-long distaste with cheese is slowly but surely ending.

I tried all sorts of new music. So much new music, in fact, that I can't possibly list them all. I feel blessed and bowled over by just how much music there is out there that I've found to be so superb that I don't compromise anything in order to like or love it. At the same time, however, as my musical horizons expand ever wider, my committment and devotion to the two or three core musical artists I've been a huge fanatic of for quite a long time has only strengthened.

(Watch out for that.)

I tried the first mixed drink I actually LIKED! The drink? Fuzzy navel. Small amount of liquor, lots of ice cold and delicious orange juice... yum. Still don't get drunk though.

I tried out voting non-Republican in a major race and I think I could get used to it, though I still occasionally feel the impulse to defend the man I ended up voting against. We'll see where I'm at with this by this time next year.

I tried Diet Coke with Lime (my new favorite soda), Pepsi Edge (which tastes really good but will be my "indulgent" drink), a cream cheese log, a fragrance, a newer set of furniture, a new(er) computer (and am now a huge fan of Compaq), less mainstream films, and being online less.

I wonder if there'll be any new things I'd try out next year.

With you there, buddy.

very strange, you two. Mangoes are singularly awesome. Maybe you need to have them *in* something...

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 07:05 (twenty years ago)

I love them in smoothie form, but the texture's just horrible.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 30 December 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Jamba Juice. not too bad, but I take myself far too seriously to be seen walking around with one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 December 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Mangoes are the singularly greatest tropical fruit ever, and that includes the texture! The stringy stuff does get stuck in your teeth if you just dig into them rather than cut them into pieces, though. That's their only down side.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 30 December 2004 08:52 (twenty years ago)

I tried vodka and cranberry juice. I just had a taste of someone else's drink. I have to remember to have this instead of gin and tonic.

I totally forgot about Firefox until Julia mentioned it! As a matter of fact, I'm currently using Firefox. I'm addicted to it. It's the best browser ever. (My school's transferring over to using it, too.) I've also tried out Windows XP at home and am REALLY loving it.

(Trip Maker -- you've got MS??? Awww. :( )

Oh! I've tried out living without eyeglasses for the first time since I was a toddler! Man, thank God for LASIK and all, but it's still nothing like the easily sharp and crisp eyesight I remember when I wore glasses.
