Could you all stop using the word "RIP" when people die?

isn't there something awfully summary about commenting on someone's death with a monosyllabic utterance that usually means something else? perhaps you could at least deign to use the humble period?

No.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Have you always been this much of an asshole, or have I just been noticing it more lately?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Do you really read those "RIP"s as monosyllabic?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

(to gabbnebb, obv., not the delightful M. White)

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Apparently gabbnebb has grown out of his humble period, and into his self-aggrandizing asshole period.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Shall we not wish the dead to rest in peace? Shall we instead send them away from our crystal shore towards the glowing eternitylessness with wishes of malice? Shall we leave behind this society of tedious respect and instead burst from our cocoon a moth whose wings are decorated with discontent? Whatever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

i just read "rip" differently from even "r.i.p."; it seems disrespectful to me.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Requiescat In Pace and RIP predate the use of periods. Nicalizioso talks pretty today.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I think that from noy on, when someone dies, we should say "Shazbot."

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

yes, that's exactly what i'm saying

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I think "wuwu ^.^" conveys the kind of respectful sentiment we're looking for here.

RIP threads tend to suck tho because all it is IS just people saying RIP - is there really a point to that?

OR, replace R.I.P. with P.I.E. (for Party In Excelsis - the afterlife isn't all bed bed bed you know...)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

CROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Then dude, wtf are you saying? Cause that's how it comes across. The fact that you refer to it as a word is evidence that you're misreading it.
I've always thought RIP is a subtle, dignified, and sweet response to a death.

craggy jones, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

how about "OTM"?

Pap Smurf died today from pancreatic cancer. he was 73. OTM!

steve, would you really deny us our commiseration, however verbally impoverished it might be?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:44 (twenty years ago)

what's the point of funerals, stevem?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

The point of funerals = closure.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Sort of like the humble period, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

i always hear 'RIP' in a Junglist accent/tone

not really Michael, it's just like anything else where you have people talking but not saying anything. perhaps some things should remain as thoughts rather than statements though? why people choose to express thoughts verbally or in print that don't stretch beyond an obvious declaration of 'sadness' upon an individual's passing is a little curious though (to me at least). carry on.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:49 (twenty years ago)

RIP threads tend to suck tho because all it is IS just people saying RIP - is there really a point to that?

exactly. same with birthday threads, though those are far less serious so it bothers me less.

The fact that you refer to it as a word is evidence that you're misreading it.

i'm not misreading it. you are. i want more respect for both language and the dead. i suppose i am taking ILX way too seriously, even in its treatment of serious subjects, but in my opinion this place is more for criticism than comity. other people on this thread have different values. even from my perspective, however, i suppose my objection is a bit too particular - just about any short post to a thread upon someone's death is summary, in fact.

Suggestions:

- Try more general keywords.
- Try fewer keywords.
