House Ethics Panel Chief May Be Replaced

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert is leaning toward removing the House ethics committee chairman, who admonished House Majority Leader Tom DeLay this fall and has said he will treat DeLay like any other member, several Republican aides said yesterday.

Although Hastert (Ill.) has not made a decision, the expectation among leadership aides is that the chairman, Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.), long at odds with party leaders because of his independence, will be replaced when Congress convenes next week.

The aides said a likely replacement is Rep. Lamar S. Smith, one of DeLay's fellow Texans, who held the job from 1999 to 2001. Smith wrote a check this year to DeLay's defense fund. An aide said Smith was favored for his knowledge of committee procedure...

Question is, is this ultimately a bad thing or a good thing? Is it better to allow such hubristic excess, assuming somebody(voters, other elected officials, etc) will eventually respond to such hubris? if they are given enough rope, will they actually wind up hanging themselves in the end? or is any feedback control mechanism essentially broken right now, allowing the problems to continue until catastrophic failure occurs?

at any rate, this upcoming year or two will be fun(and probably horrifying) to watch the ensuing schisms in the controlling party...

Oh, completely. Really, at this point I'm in this for the entertainment and black comedy (in that if I let myself get completely wound up over it all, I would cease to function).

These people need to be gang-raped in a minefield by elephants. Sorry if that come across rather strong and I wouldn't otherwise wish any ill upon elephants but there's only so long I can see these clowns shit all over decency, transparency, and American democracy without wishing that they died slow, hideous deaths.

WASHINGTON — The House ethics committee chairman who presided over three rebukes of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) was bounced from the job Wednesday and replaced by a Republican congressman from Washington state.

The new chairman is Rep. Doc Hastings (news, bio, voting record), the committee's second-ranking Republican. He was named by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) to take the gavel from Rep. Joel Hefley (news, bio, voting record) (R-Colo.).

In addition, Hastert appointed three new members to the panel, including two — Reps. Lamar S. Smith (R-Texas) and Tom Cole (R-Okla.) — whose political action committees have contributed to DeLay's legal defense fund. Smith's PAC contributed $5,000 in 2001 and an additional $5,000 between July and September 2004; Cole's gave $5,000 between July and September 2004...
