An artist, a slightly curmudgeonly man of integrity, and a man once married to Ava Gardner. He will be missed.

RIP.

(I almost put him in my dead pool for next year!)

I can't believe he was still alive!

I've been listening to old Burns and Allen radio shows -- for a while, he was the band leader. He had terrible comic timing but a certain panache in shambles that I enjoyed, especially during scenes where he and Allen were wooing.

whoa.

RIP.

How old was he? I suspect he was well into his 90s.

He was much more than "slightly" curmudgeonly, btw.

He was also married to Lana Turner. This guy got out and about. I think he was 94.

My understanding was that he would marry these sexy actresses, then give them Sigmund Freud and calculus textbooks to read, ending up frustrated when they couldn't keep up with his autodidactic tendencies. I also seem to recall that he was one of the earlier white guys to have black guys in his band, like his good friend Roy Eldridge. In any case, RIP, Artie.

(I think Leon is the new coach of the Pistons.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 December 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken's right, he did like to play Svengali/Daddy w/his women. He did a great job on Ava. I didn't mention Lana Turner 'cause she's so mediocre.

b-b-but lana turner's daughter killed her mother's gangster boyfriend!

Stompanato. He needed it.

i read the NYT obit on shaw today. apparently he gave college lecture tours after his retirement from music. one of the subjects he spoke on was "consecutive monogamy and divorce." he was married eight (!!) times.

Classic serial monogamist.
