VOTING TIME: THE ILX 1990s FILMS POLL

THE E-MAIL TO SEND BALLOTS TO IS: ilxfilm90s@yahoo.com

This is the complete, final list. You can vote for up to thirty films, and the points system is as follows...

1st - 40
2nd - 36
3rd - 32
4th - 29
5th - 27
6th - 25
7th - 24
8th - 23
9th - 22
10 through 30 continue on as such, subtracting one point the lower you go, until 30th place, which gets 1 point. Easy enough.

I hope everyone will contribute a bit of a rave about their favorite film on the list, or a rave about each film on the list. And also, I want everyone to list ONE glaring omission from the nominees list. I'm guessing certain films might receive more than one vote and if one rises above the others, it will receive an honorable mention of sorts.

And now, the list (any errors, please let me know!):

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Deadline is 23:59 GMT, January 31st, 2005.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

I can think of two big glaring omissions, should I list them here?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

No, send them in with your ballot.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

(Well, if you want to mention them here too, go for it.)

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

all right, I will send them in, but I should probably mention 'em if I want other people to vote for 'em, yeah?

so here they are:

The Hole dir. Tsai Ming-Ling 1998
The River dir. Tsai Ming-Ling 1997

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

(Note - the omissions voting is only for honorable mentions. If it didn't make the noms list, it's not counting towards the actual Top 100.)

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

ah fuck.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Why didn't you nom them yourself when you had the chance, btw?

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

because i wasn't paying attention?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

its this indie thing, see. xpost.

:| (....), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

waaah i got 48 contenders for the #1 spot. i hate polls.

:| (....), Monday, 3 January 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I should have paid attention for this. American Movie IS the nineties, somehow, and it's not here. Oh well.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 3 January 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

>American Movie IS the nineties, somehow

But we're voting for quality and not quintessence, oui?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

my ballot is necessarily going to be an educated guess, having seen fewer than half the movies on the list. for how many other people is that going to be true? maybe there should also be an intensity measure a la the Voice film poll?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

or will that just yield lots of movies that get one person's vote?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

i've seen less than half as well ... used to see a movie a week between 1992 and 1996, after that i get a bit foggy.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Just sent in my ballot, typical indie asshole votes. My biggest omission: Barcelona by Whit Stillman (94), which I prefer to Metropolitan.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

i prefer it as well, though don't think much of either

my biggest omission - Raise the Red Lantern

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I've seen slightly more than half (132 out of 253).

biggest omission: Edward Scissorhands.

a banana (alanbanana), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

The winner will end up being Curly Sue, if the FT movies list is anything to go by.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Good grief, I've seen 148 of them - it surprises me that I seem to have seen more than most. No one has ever seen/heard/read everything in any voting domain, so there is no problem with that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

biggest omission: Edward Scissorhands.

I'm personally responsible for that, I know.

Honorable mention doesn't seem so bad, though.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Oops, I forgot to drop one and nominate Sleepy Hollow

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Foreign-film distribution in this country really sucks compared to 20 years ago, even factoring in DVD. So my chief omission would be Mohnsen Makhmalbaf's "A Moment of Innocence (aka The Bread and the Vase)."

Hstencil, I offered those Tsai films in a suggestions thread, but didn't nominate them since I think his masterpiece to date came later ... "What Time Is It There?"

And the Snob Factor in dissing Spielberg, tsk tsk!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

what Spielberg is missing?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

where is Lost Highway???

Panagiotis Pileidis (Panagiotis Pileidis), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

No Saving Private Ryan (or Saving Ryan's Privates)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm not missing it - great cinematography, a few well-done episodes, but not a good movie on the whole

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I prefer Amistad to SPR and Schindler (which I also like).

There are a number of directors on that list whose best film of the decade is missing (Haynes - Poison, Redford - A River Runs Through It, Techine - Les Voleurs, John Dahl - Red Rock West, PT Anderson - Hard Eight, Spike Lee - 4 Little Girls, Ang Lee - EAT DRINK MOTHERFUCKING MAN WOMAN).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

where is Lost Highway???

on my list of worst films of the 90's.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Wondering what to include as your glaring omission? Some suggestions:

La Femme Nikita
4 Little Girls
American Movie
Freeway
Hard Eight
Flirting With Disaster
Seven
In the Name of the Father
Point Break
Husbands and Wives
Manhattan Murder Mystery
The Sixth Sense
Men in Black
Fear of a Black Hat
Booty Call
El Mariachi
Crash
Bad Lieutenant
Mon Homme
Speed
Leaving Las Vegas
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
The Killer

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

my college suitemate was in Amistad. so were his mom and grandfather. i've never seen it, though. i suppose i should.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm not missing it
I misread you. I read it as "which Spielbergs aren't on there" rather than "which Spielbergs were great and ignored." SPR was the only one I noticed.

I'm sort of surprised Jurassic Park wasn't nominated, that's the last big event picture I remember. After that, the CGI blockbusters became routine.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

damn i MEANT to nominate Hard Eight but forgot

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

i hope bio-dome wins. the 90's sucked for movies.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

henry miller, Friday, 7 January 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah i thought that was in there too

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 7 January 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

paul verhoeven and david fincher were robbed.

:| (....), Friday, 7 January 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

not to sound like a rockist but: verhoeven? in the same frickin' sentence as fincher???

henry miller, Friday, 7 January 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

they're like the Ernie & Bert of cinematic crypto-fascism

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 7 January 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

whaaat? i don't get this fincher-is-a-fascist thing -- he's easy more like gondry/jonze than verhoeven. verhoeven is michael bay with a personality.

henry miller, Friday, 7 January 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

verhoeven is michael bay with a personality.

how is that a bad thing to be?

they're like the Ernie & Bert of cinematic crypto-fascism

yeah but who is who?

:| (....), Friday, 7 January 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

verhoeven is michael bay with a personality.

No. If anything, he's Michael Bay with a conscience.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 January 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

really? i'm thinking about verhoeven films -- 'basic instinct', 'showgirls', 'starship troopers' [which is okay], 'hollow man' [sucked] -- and i'm failing to see traces of it. he gives good interview, but -- seriuously?

henry miller, Friday, 7 January 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Dear ILE,

Comments and blurbs are quite weak. Please airlift some. I am so hungry.

- The People of Berlin Girolamo

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 24 January 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Why didn't we just vote for whatever the hell we wanted, again? I am bummin on the absence of The Blue Kite and Conspirators of Pleasure...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to wonder the same, myself. I promise the next one will be open voting.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

"Next one"??

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

30s!!

:| (....), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Yes, next one. You'll have to nominate the decade first, though. ;)

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I agree! '30s! Failing that, the '20s!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I bet you could an open voting for 30s films, at least there wouldn't be a fear of the votes spreading for too many candidates...

How many of you have even *seen* 30 feature films made in the thirties?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I have. Remember, 1939 is a year in the 1930s.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I've seen a hell of a lot more than 30. I should think I've probably seen something like 30 French films alone from the '30s.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, dah, you film nerds! ;)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I've def seen over a hundred films made in the '20s, maybe 150.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I must have seen at least a thousand films from the 1910s. I lost count.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Stag films don't count.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Note to voters - I can not accept any votes on your ballots for films that are not nominated. If only b/c it's not fair to everyone else who actually stuck to the list. I'm sorry, but them's the rules for this one.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

i am still dutifully building the list of things i've seen up. schizopolis was wonderful.

andrew s (andrew s), Saturday, 29 January 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

It is, isn't it? Bringing a 35mm print to my school is still one of my high points of last year.

Anyway, THE END IS NEAR! 57.5 hours left...

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 29 January 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I just counted the number of 1930s films I've seen: exactly 30.
(all quiet on the western front, animal crackers, frankenstein, city lights, horse feathers, the mummy, duck soup, the invisible man, the thin man, the man who knew too much, a night at the opera, the 39 steps, modern times, show boat, sabotage, grand illusion, pepe le moko, a day at the races, snow white and the seven dwarfs, bringing up baby, the lady vanishes, mr. smith goes to washington, the wizard of oz, rules of the game, gone with the wind, gunga din, the scarlet empress, freaks, secret agent, bride of frankenstein)

a banana (alanbanana), Saturday, 29 January 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I dunno how many I've seen from the 1930s, but the following are in my notebook as being masterpieces or close enough:

The Blue Angel (Josef von Sternberg, 30)
Morocco (Josef von Sternberg, 30)
M (Fritz Lang, 31)
Blonde Venus (Josef von Sternberg, 32)
Freaks (Tod Browning, 32)
Love Me Tonight (Rouben Mamoulian, 32)
Shanghai Express (Josef von Sternberg, 32)
Vampyr (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 32)
Gold Diggers of 1933 (Mervyn LeRoy & Busby Berkeley, 33)
L'Atalante (Jean Vigo, 34)
The Scarlet Empress (Josef von Sternberg, 34)
The Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale, 35)
Rose Hobart (Joseph Cornell, 36)
Don Donald (Ben Sharpsteen, 37)
The Edge of the World (Michael Powell, 37)
Make Way for Tomorrow (Leo McCarey, 37)
Alexander Nevsky (Sergei Eisenstein, 38)
The Lady Vanishes (Alfred Hitchcock, 38)
The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir, 39)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 30 January 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Man was it ever hard going from 60 to 30.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 30 January 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I was pretty surprised that The Sweet Hereafter didn't appear on the list. I like it a lot more than Exotica, and it definitely would have been on my list, as would some that have been mentioned in the thread so far.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 30 January 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Man was it ever hard going from 60 to 30.

Not so much for me. I highlit just over 30 in the first pass of the ballot as being films I could imagine voting for, but now want to pare it down to a more potent 15 or 20. That probably won't be too tough, either.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 30 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Lethal Weapon 4 nominated?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

i de-nominated it.

bass braille (....), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

"This is the end...my only friend, the end." (Jeez, just realized no one nominated The Doors.)

23 hours left. Get 'em in while you still can. Blurbs are very much still in demand, too.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 31 January 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll send you some half-assed blurbs tonight!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Dammit! I left a film from the list off of my ballot. Is it ok if I send in a proper, revised one? Well I'm resubmitting one anyway...

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Attention! Prepare ship for ludicrous speed! Fasten all seatbelts, seal all entrances and exits, close all shops in the mall, cancel the three ring circus, secure all animals in the zoo!

10.5 hours left.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 31 January 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Finally sent my votes in. My comments are extremely rushed, so they are probably vacuous, contradictory and generally stupid. But at least I did some.

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm still planning on voting, but not sending comments. I've pared my list down to 45.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Just sent mine.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit. I must remember to do this tonight.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

By G.S.'s clock, deadline's in 2:35.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 January 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I sincerely hope some of you voted for my nominations. This is the first time I've bothered coming up with comments for any of these ILX/ILM polls, but I only provided comments for the films I nominated. So let the ballot-box stuffing for Uncle Sam and Red to Kill begin.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 31 January 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I just emailed mine. No blurbs though, sorry.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 31 January 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

OH SHIT I AM AT WORK NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry, Dan. I put in a vote for Eyes Wide Shut on your behalf.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I just sent my vote, I promise to get the blurbs for you tomorrow, or the day after that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Sent. Hope it's not too late.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

Vote tabulation is occurring...

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Excellent.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

PS: Blurbs are fun and cool things. Keep them coming!

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Girolamo, if you'd like me to write one or two blurbs for anything on my list, e-mail me. (Sorry, I won't have time to do more than a couple.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey, if you write some, send them in. I don't want to tell anyone in particular to write things - it'll just be nice if everyone does.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to write some tonight, use them if you like!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I don't feel up to it. Particularly insecure about my thinking tonight, and a bit filmed out after writing about 20 pieces for the Freaky Trigger top 100.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what I'd write, though. I have no idea what others have done, nor if anything I wrote about would actually make the final list or not.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Yay, yet another ILX poll that I forgot to vote in because I'm a procastinating idiot! Grr.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I didn't do blurbs because I didn't think any of my choices wouldn't have been blurbed better by others. Feel free to email me on my gmail address (the one I sent my votes from) if you want me to do something though.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I blurbed my top ten, but if you need blurbs for any of my #s 11-30, let me know.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)
