My mate was telling me about this last week. I'm suprised Skype offers VOIP for nothing when a lot of other voip providers charge a monthly fee.

I dont own a mic tho :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Dunno how well it will work on my slow ass dialup, but we can try.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

I HEARD THE VOICE OF JON WILLIAMS, for like ten seconds and then dialup dropped a fart. oh well.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Why is no one on this??? Free telephone calls anywhere in the world and no one's interested? Is Your Voice too personal an instrument to communicate with?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

talking to your computer feels kinda weird.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I want to try this but I am busy installing a fully functional VoIP telephone switch! :-D

Drake Beardo (cprek), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

my name is, boringly, my name. my middle initial is 'c'.

someone in the office tele-commutes using this but will often just 'phone' you because he's bored and lonely when you're trying to get something done = dud. it also means having to unplug earphones or listen to cds using manky headphones with captain scarlet mic attached. so i tend to just use the IM aspects of it (but even that annoys me because it'll grab focus when you're trying to type in another window)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

This is really cool

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Remy Ulysses Q. Fitzgerald (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I chatted with Accentmonkey a few days ago from several thousand miles away. For free!

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 30 April 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

hey you know if you don't have a mic you can plug a pair of headphones into the mic hole and it'll work. Can't be good for the headphones though probably I guess.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 30 April 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

use cheap ones duder.

yeah this seems really, really useful and cheap too, for calls to america (1.1p per minute?)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

signed up under "cozenx"

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm on it as stevienixed (I think). Don't skype me, I really wouldn't know what to say (besides the usual silliness). I use it to call my parents. It's so cheap. We used to have high telephone costsin the past. I wanted to buy an isight camera. The guy at the shop advised us to just get skype! I feel like such an idiot cause everyone I know already has this for a couple of years. You can also just chat, which I'm better at. I'm only on it during work. Anyway, it's deadcheap, especially if you phone regular phones.

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

I've signed on as tantrumthecat. I'm just as scintillatingly witty in chat, too.

If anybody wants to hit up an aussie for chat and such, you can always get me at mikeybidness.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

someone online? im on, someone type at me, or, something, i guess this is kind of pointless since i don't have a mic.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

oh i have a mic, i should hook it up...but i don't think i have any speakers which may make things suck a fair bit.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

Mandee, what's your username? I can't find it. :(

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason I can never find users on this even when I know their login and full name. It seems like there's something wrong with the search function.

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that too. :-(

So, I'm in the UK, I've got a Mac running 10.2.8, a router and ADSL connection but no landline that I can use (I mean I could, technically, but the line really belongs to my landlady and it's easiest just not to).

So I want to go the internet telephony way. I want to have a real phone handset that will ring (ideally the dordless one I already own).

I also want a number that people can call me on and not have to pay more than if they were ringing a landline.

What's my best option?

The letter from Neil Veitch here seems to suggest a SIP service is what I want. So for this I just need some kind of IP adaptor that costs about £70 and that's it? Is that right?

Or is Skype a better bet?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm.. I note that skype needs OS 10.3. Maybe it's finally time to upgrade.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Dordless is a good idea but I meant cordless.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

an occasional visitor to our offices had a normal telephone handset that plugged into his laptop via usb... something like this: http://www.pc-telephone.com/usb-phone.htm

the 'i want a number that people can call me on' thing is:
http://www.skype.com/products/skypein/

(as opposed to 'skype out' which lets you use your pc to call real telephones)

(i hate telephones. so how do i know all this stuff?)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

"To make it even better, SkypeIn comes with a free Skype Voicemail subscription, so when Aunt Jenny calls you about urgent pet-related matters, but you’re busy or even offline, she can leave you a voicemail message (and you know she will). And you can listen to it when you’re good and ready... but don’t forget to call her back to congratulate. And perhaps to help her use Skype so she wouldn’t have to pay for telling you about her cats."

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

The advantage of sipgate seems to be that it's more hardware focussed and there are no subscription fees to pay. Hmmm...

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

This seems to be the bit of kit I need but phrases like "simply plug in your ATA-486, and it should work after minor configuration changes" worry me a bit.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

> and there are no subscription fees to pay

"1000 minutes per month to standard UK landlines for £5.9"

5.9 looks like a suspiciously large value of 0 to me 8)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

But that's a bulk buying deal, not a subscription. If you don't pay that then calls to UK landlines are 1p a minute.
