Looks like England might lose the third test.

The Sarfies leading by 403 with 7 instruments remaining and 2 days to go. Kallis well set. I think they'll leave us 500+. Can we bat for 2 days? Doesn't look good.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

7 "instruments". Ha! Where did that come from. I mean WICKETS!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

and the pitch will deteriorate even more. prob looking at 1-1 (and rain won't save eng - only one day's worth of cricket lost at that ground in ~25 years).

If we had another 30 mins at durban this wouldn't matter - I really feel cheated.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Kelis well set? Fruitbat? The Goodies?!!

Cricket is a funny old game oh sorry wrong ball.

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Goodness me, things are in a mess. It seems a bit odd that SA haven't enforced the follow on.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

makes sense given what happened between the first and second innings at durban ricky - leave 'em out in the field and break eng.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Just looking at Cricinfo - it seems that Langeveldt has broken his hand while batting. As a major bowler in the first innings they may have decided to give him some recovery time rather than put us in with a bowler short.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Now 427 ahead. Also - there's 25 overs left today! Possibly a 20 over thrash, hoping to get 100+ more and then put us in for 5 overs at the end of the day? That's what I'd do.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Dudes! Why no cricket threads when England are doing well? Are you the BBC in disguise?

Anyway, I reckon England will win.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

7 "instruments". Ha! Where did that come from. I mean WICKETS!

-- Dr. C (Daveatcrossdee...), January 4th, 2005.

This reminded me of a USENET thread that took Cricinfo commentary and put it through the google page translator into a given language and then back into English. For those that don't know cricinfo, they pay people to type in "commentary" of each ball in major games. My favourites are the Italian and the Portugese. Start quote from one of the messages:

The translation is at its best when it messes with people's names. For
example, commentary of the first ball of Nuwan Zoysa's hat-trick against
Zimbabwe (Zoysa, the Sri Lankan bowler has dismissed the wonderfully named Trevor Gripper Leg Before Wicket. Bucknor is the umpire, called upon to decide on the appeal for the wicket):

(original:)

1.1 Zoysa to Gripper, OUT: ball comes back into the right hander,
straighten his bat and hits the pad, loud shout and Bucknor takes
his own time and declares him out

"1.1 Zoysa to the grip arm, OUT: Ball comes into the right more hander,
straight-arranges its blow back and successes the edition, the loud Shout
and the Bucknor lasts its own time and explains it out"

"1.1 Zoysa with the grip, OUTSIDE: the ball returns in the good hander,
rectify its beater and the blows the trimming, the strong cry and Bucknor
take its own time and declares outside it"

"1.1 Zoysa to the taken clamp of, OUTSIDE: the sphere returns in the just
one hander, straightens its block and the blows the relief, the strong
outcry and the Bucknor are necessary its just time and it declares it
outside"

"1.1 Zoysa to the arrestor, FOR OUTSIDE: the sphere comes back in right
hander, straightens its baton and the strokes the cushion, shout high and
the Bucknor make examination of its proper time and declare it for are"

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the language labels didn't come out. The order was original, German, French, Italian and Portugese.

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

222/8. A 500 lead.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

We're fucked really, aren't we? I mean, we're obviosuly capable of getting that in certain circumstances, but batting last in a test with Vaughan and Key not looking in the best of nick?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

yes - even if they were in gd form (not that you could expect key to be in gd form) it would be quite something to bat five sessions.

I think if Harminson gets onto a gd run we'll win the series.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

sometimes i wish i cared enough about sport to stick up for my country on these threads

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Mr Punch is digging in nicely with the skipper. If we can bat until close without losing another wicket, I think we have a chance of hanging on. Thorpe will need to bat most of tomorrow.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Christ, we were 0-1 when Trescothick went. Shades of Gooch and Headingley 1981. I wonder if Dennis Lillee fancies a flutter?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Er, no, Mike.

4 for just over 100, Frankie Vaughan and Bob the Blob both out in last ten minutes.

As the TA site is now reminding us, 11 days to go to the Open. Doubtless we'll catch up there!

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I literally cannot wait, Fred. I expect ILX to go down again in the midst of a Federer-Hewitt five-set semi.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

It's all up now.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

doing ok so far in the fourth: 77-1 at lunch.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Strauss moves towards another 50, I hope Keyey does well this time.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Wish this was on Test Match Special, fucking TalkSport.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Well done Straussy another lovely opening innings, we just need to bowlers to perform in this one.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Straussy 6 short of a century. Mr.Punch 3 short of a 50!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

key scores his 50! anymore of this => end for butcher, maybe, and no ashes for him?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Key gets 50 with successive 4s off Kallis. I think it will be the end for Butch whatever, Key does in this series. There's Key and Bell challenging for one spot. Butch hasn't been in the best of form and I can't see him coming back unless injuries happen to others. He's also captain of Surrey next season, so I think he's preparing for moving back to the county game. A few injuries could change things, i guess, and you wouldn't want to bring in an untried batsmen vs Oz.

Strauss on 99.... facing Boje.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmm I wish I could see some of this, I want to know what this pitch is doing.

Great start so far for England.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Go Strauss!!!!

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Strauss 109 Punch 77. Good stuff! The pitch sounds flat - a bit different from the last time we played here - we were 2 for 4, Vaughan's first test.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Strauss is like a run machine. He's the new Ken Barrington, I'm tellin' ya.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm a bit worried attack on this pitch about our Jimmy Anderson has no match practise, Flintoffs possible injury issues, Harmion not on form, we better score a fuck load of runs.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

We need to post 500. Then we really need to bowl meanly and well at their top order.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

How about Vaughan, sorry Vaughany, scoring some runs for a change? Is it possible?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

It's possible, but he's been in such shaky nick of late that he'll probably get to 30-odd and then hook something to deep square leg.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

A harmion sounds like a sub atomic particle...

Vaughan seems to be taking it very slowly, must be hard with Strauss playing so well and maybe a lack of confidence in Thorpe, Flintoff, Jones.

If we see the day out like this then it's a great day for us.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

bugger strauss gone....

Thorpe and Vaughan have got to do well.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

You were saying?

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Curses...

ahh well bad light

Well Vaughan and Flinters it's up to you, no offense Hoggy.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

However, if you'd offered me 263-4 at the start of the day I'd have taken it. This pitch is only going to get harder to bat on. I'm not enormously worried about the bowling, Anderson wouldn't have been picked without good reason, and the wanderer's has a reputation for balls boomeranging around the place. Plus a ptich that is already cracked and ridged should lead for some dubious bounce for Harmison to exploit later on.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Well i've not heard anything about the pitch, 263-4 is pretty good though we should build on that tommorow and then lets see what the pitch does.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Overcast, bowler friendly conditions. Ball swinging about everywhere....and Hoggard drives Pollock for four. Bizarre. Oh, and then out.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Well that was fun.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Indeed Harmison is turning into a super number 11, I think we should teach Strauss to bowl offbreaks.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

We've done well. Now let's bowl them out.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Can't really lose from now, by what I hear of the pitch... but can they win? May well depend upon the weather.

Tom May (Tom May), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

difficult to win: hoggard nearly pulled off a miracle at one stage when SA were 184-5 but Boucher spoiled it.

hope harminson can play but its looking grim and a shame vaughan wz fined.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 15 January 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

its in the balance - if we can get SA to chase 250 I think we could have a chance but they could also win. prob need to be at least 270 ahead to be sure of a draw.

eng are almost breaking apart with injuries...i think the ECB have got to organize easier schedules: 5 tests in 8 weeks is suicidal.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 January 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

302-8 => gd on ya trescothick for keeping it together.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 January 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Harmison seems to be running through okay though...magnificent effort from Tresco.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 January 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

How long can Smith last, apparently he was told not to play at all.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Gutsy performance from the man.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Is Anderson bowling complete shit? He's gone for 32 from 6 overs so far. Run rate of current partnership is at 4.32.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Gibbs is gone! 163/7!

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Gibbs gone, Giles this time ruining Hoggys chance of a 10fer

Yes Anderson was bowling like shite in the last innings too lack of confidence and practise, we just need him to bowl while Hoggard has a rest.

Come on England 2 hours 3 wickets, Pollock and an injured Smith to get through then it's Ntini and Steyn

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Pollock gone after being twatted in the head, come on..

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

One of the great tests.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, somehow TWENTY runs came off that last over!

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

It looks like SA have just gone 'sod it, let's try and blitz our way to victory'.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The runs don't matter thats why they are scoring so freely.

We just need get some more balls at Ntini.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Ntini gone lbw, just Steyn now.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Anderson drops Smith

I CANT COPE

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I CAN'T COPE!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

yes!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

WE WON

FUCKING RIGHT

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

YES!

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm still shaking from that - the injuries, that fine, SA scoring over 400 - just how the fuck did we pull that off.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

(in the 1st innings i mean)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

And people say test match cricket is boring....

Perforances all around the park

Stauss' 100
Nice knock from Key
Vaughan and Harmison posting the 400+
Gibbs 100 and Hoggard in the 1st innings
Anderson bowling like crap and still managing somehow to get Gibbs
Boje and Ntini fun to give a 1st innings lead
Tresco 180 a fantastic innings.
Then Gibbs retaining his form almost getting a century in both innings
Captains innings from a concussed Smith
And finally Hoggard 7-61 and 12 wickets in the match.

What a great game.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

*speechless*

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I just wish I could see it, are there DVDs released of test series?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

aparently, that's the first time in over a decade that a team has got ten wickets in two sessions on the final day. wowee!!!

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

An england team surely?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Okay we've just lost Strauss, we need to survive 40+ overs to draw and win the series, or make 185 to win the test and the series 3-1.

Game on.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

There's surely no way we'll go for the runs...

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

not now we've lost Key and Tresco too.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

It's test cricket not the circus, go for the draw

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear...

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

It's fucking tense.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

what a fucking series...

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

The next 35 minutes are going to be very tense.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

And there we go! I'm actually exhausted by that. Proper, nerve-wracking Test cricket. Smith must be pretty angry with Kallis that he didn't up the run-rate earlier in the day. Another twenty overs would have been terrifying. That's the best twenty-odd Vaughan's ever made.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Woot

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Celebratory pint at some point I feel Matthew?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'd be a fool to say no.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I will join you in spirit from the Bridge.

why must we cut onions? (Lynskey), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Great series. Gutsy stuff by England today. Bring on the Aussies! How do people think we'll do, assuming everyone is fit? If I'm honest I can't see us winning, but I can see a close losing series 3-2 or something. If Harmison can get some form back, Vaughan can get some consistency and Flintoff stays fit I think we have a chance. The Jones/Anderson bowling slot worries me. I like Jones, but there's no way he'll stay fit all summer. And the moment Jimmy is so far off the pace that he'd get slaughtered by the likes of Hayden, Ponting etc if he came in. We really need to find another 2 seamers from somewhere in case of injuries. Also what's the plan if Harmison doesn't get his form back in time? Flintoff simply cannot be expected be the main strike bowler AND score heavily at 6. There will be a LOT of bowling to do!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the Ashes will be as close as people think (hope) it will be - Australia are still some way ahead, they're still demolishing sides. Obviously it's a great achievement to win a test series in SAfrica but SA are not much cop at the moment (two good bowlers, one (or two) good batsman)

Dadaismugness (Dada), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I see a 3-2 or 2-1 series loss. The biggest drawback in SA was lack of any kind of cricket to warm up after the autumn break. The whole squad should be sent for some early season county matches.

Also I'd question Trescothick's position, if there were anyone else to replace him, which there probably isn't. He seems to be too easy to draw out into playing stupid shots early on in a match when he should be sitting tight. It's a shame there is no one really out there that would enable Trescothick to bat at 3 or 4. He can bat very well but seems too reckless with the new ball.

When do Ashes Tickets go on sale (if I haven't missed them)?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

OK Lords is out days one to 4 but maybe a monday at the cricket may be in order.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

... nothing could be finer (not even bein' in Carolina in the mornin')

Dadaismugness (Dada), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to a day at Old Trafford I hope.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid they are selling tickets for the Monday's this time, or they have some special arrangement going. I'll probably go to the Oval as usual, I hope.

I wouldn't like to make an Ashes prediction. Harmison is in wretched form, and really needs to get it together, and they'll be after Ashley Giles from the get go.

Anyway, another good series win!!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Given the limited preparation and the fact that we didn't cope as well, injury-wise, as the home team its kinda awesome that we won this series. Another 30 mins in Durban and this last afternoon would've never been so nerve racking. I do think australia are being a bit overrated here - India could've won that second test but the last day was a wash out. They are great but I think most sides aren't up to it right now and if you put a bit of pressure on teams like SA, west indies or pakistan they collapse very easily. Basically, if Harminson gets back into his best and Vaughan averages round 45 we have a really good chance. Should be fun, and the last test series to be broadcast on national TV for the nest five years woo!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Trescothic scored two centuries in this series, including a series winning 180!

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I DON'T question Trescothick's place as opener. The way he plays, he will always be liable to get out by not moving his feet to wider deliveries, but every batsman has a weakness and he's shown that when he gets in he can score fast and get BIG hundreds home and away. I think number 3 bears some discussion. Key has done well, AND has experience vs the Aussies in Australia last time, where he didn't disgrace himself, but he has to tighten up his technique early on. He seems to play with hsi bat too far away from his body until he's set. I hope he does well, but I think we may need Ian Bell before the series ends.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

The Lord's website says no presales for monday.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I'd def have trescothick but given his record against australia an alernative would be to drop him down the order to five, move thorpe up to four and get vaughan opening (but maybe that's a bit too much pressure on the captain). Addtionally, we should give Ian bell the no3 spot but key has done well so far. We should try some of this against bangladesh.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

But almost anything would work against Bangladesh. They might as well play St. Dunstan's blind school.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, I'll ask my pal about the monday ticket situation, it might just be at the oval, or maybe it was that they weren't going to do the usual £10 thing. I dunno, I'll find out.

You can kinda predict what sorta score Key will make, it's usually 3 single figure scores, then a good 70 or 80. I'd go with Bell.

If England lose the first Ashes test, I think Australia will win the series. I don't want to think like this.
