I love the Spirit, and I've eulogized WE elsewhere, so

Very sad. I saw him speak on a panel a few years ago with Neil Gaiman, Ben Katchor, Chris Ware, and Scott McCloud, and it was inspiring to see how awestruck and reverential *they* were toward him. He meanwhile still seemed very sharp and funny.

Awww, he was one of my heroes when i was a kid. i'll have to find my copy of a contract with god. many moons ago i had a huuuuuuge spirit collection. every possible thing i could find i would buy. all the warren ones. kitchen sink. and many more. all the collected daily strips. i was so amazed by his art.

stuff like his felt like such a secret when i was a kid. i didn't know anyone on earth who know who he was or who cared about that kinda thing. When I was in the 8th grade(1980?1981?) I used to write short stories that were just complete rip-offs of The Spirit and Airplane The Movie. True story!

I've been reading the Spirit Archives (out of sequence) for the last month and I'm just in awe. Last night (after reading most of Vol. 1) I had Spirit dreams.
I love the disguises the Spirit would wear, like big (Eisner-style) glasses over his mask.

Shame.

Excerpted from the AP Obit:

“I had been producing comic books for 15-year-old cretins from Kansas,” he said in a 1998 interview. With The Spirit, he was aiming for “a 55-year-old who had his wallet stolen on the subway. You can’t talk about heartbreak to a kid.”

Yeah, that quote explains whey Eisner freaked me out when I read him as a kid. A major talent, off in his own odd niche, and a real original.

I loved him and this is very sad.

Very sad. Somewhere (probably in my parents attic) I have an autographed Spirit book that I bought at a yard sale when I was kid.

I got to be one of the judges for the Eisner Awards a few years ago, which meant I got to meet the man himself on awards night. I was awestruck.

His splash pages are things of beauty. I need to go back and reread my Spirit comics - it's been years. Truly sad news.
