I usually visit my girlfriend while she's also on her lunchbreak.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

eat lunch or go to borders

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Eat. Sometimes I take a walk with my dad if he's around (he works two block from me.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

get lunch in the canteen, chat with colleagues, browse internet with less guilt

not good really - must do more in the time

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i walk to the shop to get my bagel, come back to the office and eat it while reading. woo.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I look out my window at all the warehouses and truck dealerships surrounding my place of employment and wonder what it's like for people that have somewhere decent to go for lunch. Being forced to eat at the hospital cafeteria suxxx. People dis hospital food for a reason. Also I read the newspaper.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Read ILX. I work an 8-hour lunch break.

I'm pretty glad to say my lunch breaks are unpredictable and hence not boring, but I really should go to the gym more.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I take one hour, 12 - 1pm. I take the Guardian crossword and sit outside if it's warm and sunny, upstairs in the dept cafe if not. Usually I buy a bagel/sandwich and some crisps. When I finish (get stuck on) the crossword, I read a book. Occasionally if cover allows, I go to the bar/canteen nearby and have lunch with colleagues - a hot meal or a salad this time, plus coffee. Also I do chores like going to bank/post office/library (all on campus). Exciting stuff.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Eat lunch and read.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Get the fuck out of the office. Deal with the horrendous traffic. Eat. Read and/or do the crossword.

craggy jones, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

what tissp said

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Aside from eating - I'll do anything that keeps me out of this place. I walk a lot - I'm right downtown, so there's lots to do and I need to walk regularly to keep my back in good shape. I'll also take care of bills or shopping.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I forgot. Sometimes I do the crossword too. I leave a fast paced and exciting life.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

And where do you afterwards?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

There is nowhere to read here. I like this company but it is like being in college or something. Maybe I will start going to Yuerba Buena at lunch. Maybe I'll walk over to The Embarcadero. I miss my digital camera.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

*eat, obviously
*go for a walk through those strangely wide-open spaces that somehow linger in the midst of suburban commerce
*go home and play the shit out of some drums for like 20 - 30 minutes (especially if I'm having a shit day)
*go up to the always dark and warm file room upstairs and squeeze in a nap

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Your office has drums???

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Walk around a bit, buy a sandwich, sometimes have a look in Woolworths or Blockbuster.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

go home and play the shit out of some drums for like 20 - 30 minutes

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

oh right

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

And where do you afterwards?

I don't afterwords, I forwards.

I miss my digital camera.

No luck on the broken display?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Usually ILX chat coincides perfectly with lunchtime here, so that's what I end up doing. I rarely leave the office other than to get food and bring it back. I eat at my desk most of the time.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Eat lunch, smoke two cigarettes, do crossword puzzles (normal and cryptic).

Huk-L, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Eat lunch, walk around campus, mail packages, get h1gh (on bad days).

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Go to record/book shops, grab a pasty. Walk.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

eat & read books

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

eat & read books

Whichy books do you find most tasty? Do myou only eat the ones you liked reading, or eat the rubbish ones instead of finishing them>?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I don my super secret costume and solve crimes.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Wake up. Then eat breakfast.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

No luck on the broken display?

Not yet. I hate being so in love with technology if only because it is so heartbreaking when things inevitably fuck up on you.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Are you talking about that vibrator that broke again?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

cookbooks are tastiest

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I used to go out more with co-workers or my girlfriend. Now I just go to one of the two places in the mall (our office space is in the middle of a mall) to get either a sub/sandwich or pizza, go back to my desk and either work or read ILX. The shorter the break I take, the sooner I can go home.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I eat at my desk most of the time, too. So I usually just browse the Internet (i.e., no different from the rest of my day). Part of it's because I want to be able to leave early, so I only take a 30-minute lunch instead of an hour lunch. I suppose when it gets warmer, I might walk around downtown.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I wish I worked in a mall.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

The shorter the break I take, the sooner I can go home.

(Oh yeah, I didn't see that. Right.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I eat lunch with my wife almost every day, and we bitch about people we work with.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

We do that over dinner.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to eat lunch with Mrs Adam but she works nearly an hour away!

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

It's a really small, crappy mall. The 'food court' is two places I mentioned, and I've never been in any of the stores because they're all useless (three salons, a nails place, hobby store, bead store, etc.).

There is a cool movie theater that shows independent films, but I haven't been there since I started working here.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I eat at my desk and play on the internet, just like jaymc (and many others). I'm doing that right now.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I do what Kenan and many others do. But I only have a 25 minute lunch so I don't really have much time to do anything else (forget going anywhere).

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I usually don't take one. If I do, it's to go run errands. But I'm going to start going to the gym over lunch.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

How can there be time to go to the gym over lunch? Unless you take an hour, I guess. But when would you eat???

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

xpost to original question, ignoring all similar responses above:
I come to ILX- why should that half-hour be different from the other 23 and a half?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I used to go to the gym over lunch and then eat during the afternoon.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

xxpost:
You take a "long lunch." At some office jobs going to the gym is pretty socially acceptable, even if things like going out to meet a friend for lunch aren't.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

"How can there be time to go to the gym over lunch? Unless you take an hour, I guess. But when would you eat???"

You can use the hour to go to the gym and then eat at your desk while doing work or on your breaks. It's fairly common practice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I walk the streets looking for somewhere to buy lunch that won't make me fatter. Or I remember to bring lunch from home and go to the tea room to read and eat.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

i luckily live close to my work so i go home on break and smoke loads of ciggies and play with the cat. sometimes i eat. sometimes i'll do previous night's dishes. and sometimes i'll just watch some television.

ai lien m. draheim (kold_krush), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

That sounds great!

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

not bad, not bad.

ai lien m. draheim (kold_krush), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Eat sandwiches
Read/post to ILX
Update my blog

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I usually skip my lunch break and eat at my desk so I can get overtime.

But, if I do take a break, I read (I almost always pack a lunch).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

"How can there be time to go to the gym over lunch? Unless you take an hour, I guess. But when would you eat???"

Stop eating, lose weight three times as fast

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

i've really enjoyed the few times that i've gone back home for lunch. (usually happens when i made pack lunch that i forget to bring or need to go home to retreve things). TV, proper cooking equipment (well basically the gas cooker for ramen), guitar, solitude.

it's something that i considered doing regularly now but this involves taking a 1.5 hour lunch (25 mins bus there, 25 mins bus back, 10 mins food prep/fraff around, 30 mins eating) which isn't kosher to do on a regular basis.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Nooner!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

lucky for me i live less 10 minutes walk from where i work, so lunch time at home is a must. Just wish C4 would put Cheers back on at 12:30

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Go to the gateway center and get something to eat and make a phone call to someone, so it'll kind of be like a digital, 21st century version of having lunch with a friend.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I read a book. In the summer there's a lovely fountain just outside, and I sit by there and read, and in the winter I sit in the kitchen. It gives one a sense of tranquility.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Or work microwave has broken. Hooray, sandwiches for dinner!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Curse you people with lunch hours! (I haven't been able to take an hour-long lunch for nigh on ten years.)

Since I generally bike to work I can't drive to get food, and the places within walking distance are dismal. So I generally find myself sitting at my desk, or eating a sandwich whilst walking.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

In the winter-30 min. for eating in breakroom, 30 min. for playing on the internet/reading
In the summer-Read outside or go for a walk, spend more money on eating out rather than bringing my lunch.
Sometimes I go to the amazing record/book/comic/beads (?) shop right across the street that takes up a whole block. And then I buy gruesome comics and read them while eating, which is not always such a good idea for me/my workmates.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

My lunch break is from 12 to 1 o'clock. I bring my lunch in - either beans/macaroni on toast, soup and toast or instant noodles - and sit in the kitchen downstairs to eat it. There's a big stack of magazines that other people buy, so I use the time to catch up on showbiz gossip and how to apply mascara. If I've read all the magazines I'll buy a paper from the Union shop.

Because my faculty is in the middle of a field on top of a hill, it's really nice in summer. There are lots of little hidden corners and sunny spots to sit in and go pink. But dammit, sometimes I remember what it was like to work round the back of Oxford Circus and spend the whole of my lunch break shopping, and I WEEP.
