hello!
i have a free american airlines voucher and i'd like use it to go to brazil. i'm trying to plan out my trip for march and was wondering if any of you had any good tips on inexpensive places to stay and eat...and also where to find some fun events.

thanks!

three months pass...
so i haven't really been on ilx in quite a while....sorry about that!

i ended up going to brazil from april 1-15 and am already thinking about going back.

brazil was amazing--all that you've heard about its awesomeness is true...the only hype i found was in regards to the "lack of safety". granted, there are high crime rates and corruption in the police force but, like anywhere else, your chances of being victimized are small if you usencommon sense.

out of the language, culture and landscape i was most impressed by the people--even if the country were ugly as shit i would've still found it to be incredible because of their friendliness and genuine hospitality.

highlights (in no particular order):
-seeing gilberto gil...youth discount tix on the vip section, baby!
-sushi in sao paulo (especially at jun sakamato)
-going to a forro party the lagoon in rio
-hanging out with spencer chow in rio ;)
-first time i had traveled to a non-asian country where people were surprised that i was not a local
-watching people rappel off a highway overpass in sao paulo onto the median below (pics later)
-partying in rocinha, brazil's largest favela, where i hit up a baile funk party and a samba party
-getting the opportunity to hang out with the organizers of the aforementioned favela parties because i was escorted by DIPLO (!!!!)

anyone who loves music, food and beautiful people should go to brazil before they die.

Why not?

-hanging out with spencer chow in rio ;)

Hey, I can hang out with him any time I want! Just not in Rio, I admit.

that overpass is near a rock-climbing gym....i'm guessing that whenever the gym first opened the climbers must've decided it would be awesome to rappel off the overpass. i discovered all this spontaneously when i was on my way to a friend's apartment. a couple of these guys (one of which the father a rappelers) offered to clip me on but i was a bit weary. of course, after partying in the favela surrounded by ak-47s i felt a bit more invincible and went back to the overpass only to find that it was one of their days off ;(

that's right ned--RIO! that's like seeing spencer in l.a. times 20...except that was the only time i'd ever hung out with spencer...so i guess i'm still a little behind you in spencer buddy points :(
