Yes, Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenium_Hilton is spelled incorrectly.

But WHY?

http://i21.tinypic.com/n4zhnn.jpg

StanM, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

The French spell millennium with one n, so maybe Hilton Hotels are trying to be fancy.

Alba, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

It was also the Countdown conundrum once, so it must be possible to spell it with nine letters. I can't remember if it was 'milennium' or 'millenium' though.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

The millennium cycle path through my home town is spelt "millenium".

ailsa, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

millennia?

Mark G, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

Weird, OED lists the one 'n' version as a variant, but not my American dictionary.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

I can confirm that it was the British version of Countdown. It was the conundrum on a kids' version of the show, and the winning prodigy got it in less than one second.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 22 October 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a non-British version of Countdown?

Casuistry, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it started in France.

Alba, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Called "Mots et chiffres", I think, and they had equal numbers of word and picture rounds, not hating maths like the British.

Alba, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Word and number, rather. Being British, I get confused between numbers and pictures.

Alba, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

I played the online version of Countdown once and found it to have the twin virtues of being massively difficult and completely boring. But I've barely seen the show and haven't worked up my skill set I guess.

Casuistry, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

There is a Countdown quiz machine in one of the pubs I frequent, where you answer questions to get letters and numbers and solve the puzzles from there. This combines my favourite things of being in pubs, doing puzzles, and getting free money.

ailsa, Monday, 22 October 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

...Word and number, rather. Being British, I get confused between numbers and pictures.

I'm having a smirk attack at the idea that every alternate round consists of tasks like "draw a dog".

i was just talking about how words like this (especially stuff like "neccessarily" and "embarrassment" always fuck me up... not even sure the latter one is right)

s1ocki, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Necessary" is spelled with just one c.

Tuomas, Thursday, 9 October 2008 07:02 (seventeen years ago)

But you got embarrassment right.

Tuomas, Thursday, 9 October 2008 07:02 (seventeen years ago)

In Finnish it's possible to form compound words with four consecutive vowels, like "luu-uurna". But the Finnish spelling regulates that if there's more than two same vowels in a row, you have to place a hyphen between them.

Tuomas, Thursday, 9 October 2008 07:08 (seventeen years ago)

Tarzan knew one word that was all consecutive vowels...

Mark G, Thursday, 9 October 2008 08:15 (seventeen years ago)

Accommodate is large enough to accommodate twos 'c's and two 'm's. (pro tip)

"Pizzazz" remains a marvel to me - so few English words require even a single "z", and yet here's a word that demands FOUR of 'em.

xpost - that's "Snuffleupagus"!

Three double letters in one word: bookkeeper.

There's an Encyclopedia Brown plot solution that turns on this one.

How did Encyclopedia Brown know the subbookkeeper was pilfering?

HOOSIC has the right to steendrive (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

that was one of the worst solutions! "My evidence that you threw the contest is... your occupation! It would never slip anyone's mind
that her occupation is the answer to a contest question, therefore that is incontrovertible evidence that you are guilty, guilty guilty!"
