What would be the effect on global economics?
Do you think it would be a giant step forward for the third world?

Ainsworthy, Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

the World Pretend Bank would go Pretend Broke.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

The third world would never learn the importance of thrift and sound investments and end up in debt again in no time. (/scrooge)

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I know that if my debt was wiped, I certainly would NOT go ahead and purchase the $500 black and white 50s style sundress I decided was my favorite thing ever at BCBG (I think? Maybe it was bebe? Who the hell cares?) the other day. So I'm certain no one in the third world would do that either. Because the dress was only available in a size 12 anyway.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I think size 12 is too big for much of the third world anyway.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

right. because they're starving. Size 2, if you're big-boned.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Ally, did you know L'eggs was a division of Sara Lee Corp? I don't feel this is right somehow.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Could Marilyn Monroe wear it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Could MM wear third world debt or Sara Lee corp?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

sizes have changed over the years so that the average obese american women doesn't feel self conscious. so though marilyn monroe was a size 12 several decades ago, i think that would be a 6 or so by today's standards.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

EMILY DON'T POINT THAT OUT AROUND HERE SOME PEOPLE ARE VERY TOUCHY ABOUT SUCH FACTS, TRUST ME AND THE WORD BEATING I RECEIVED ONCE.

And I did not know that, about L'eggs. Maybe that's why I can also never find L'eggs in my size, when I rip my expensive stupid pantyhose and decide to only buy cheap ones from now on. Oh fuck having a job.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

This drives me effin' nuts, Emily. 'Knowing' my gf's size is no longer good enough because it differs from brand to brand and from season to season.

Ally, Wolford's.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

it is a true problem facing today's shoppers, michael. GET ONE TRUE SIZE, FASHION INDUSTRY!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I KNOW. Dude, I was in the GAP the other day and decided to try on a pair of jeans because they were on sale. Atrocious, atrocious, apparently size 4s in the GAP universe have much flatter asses and smaller hips than I do but 3X BIGGER THIGHS. It only just barely fit on the hips but was baggy on the legs! And they were supposed to be slim cut. Completely confounding. What is even weirder is that Old Navy and Banana Republic, both owned by the same monolith of non-fashion as the GAP, are sized even larger than the GAP is; wouldn't the same company use the same sizes universally throughout their subsidiaries?

It's even gotten to underwear for crying out loud; a B cup at Victoria's Secret fits just fine while a C cup at Frederick's just barely works--EXCEPT for in their "Extreme" collection in which the C cup is a little too big. WTF?

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

don't get me started on victoria's secret sizes. who decided on them? i know who-THE ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE, that's who!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I would love to chair the U.S. Bra Cup Size Standardization Committee hearings but the damn garment industry will never let that happen.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

If the truth about the bra lobby was known...

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

But Allyzy is saying that the B cup (smaller) acommodates her fine, while in other stores she needs something bigger.
Therefore: Victoria's Secret: The Massive Melon Committee! (erm, I must be able to improve on that...)

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

yes but you can't get bigger than a C at victoria's secret! i have heard that they make larger sizes, but have never seen them with my own eyes.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

My amply busted friend worked one summer in a lingerie store and told me the worst stories about people so attached to 'their' bust and cup sizes that they'd buy hideously fitted stuff despite her admonishments.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

i am sure this often led to the "quadruple boob" effect so often sported by high school teachers.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I'd hate to see what they have to do with the models after they add those chicken cutlets and all the engineering to make them all grow one or two cup sizes for the "sexy" photos, I mean I fall out of their "sexy" bras, which all seem to be sized differently than other manufacturers, just lying down; wtf would happen if I had all the fucking silicone inserts and shit in there??? They must glue their nipples to the bras. I should ask Jimmy the Mod about this, he knows about fashion photography.

I absolutely refuse to buy one of those "Body by Victoria" monstrosities.

xpost Yeah you can't actually get a D or bigger at at Victoria's Secret store except MAYBE in the Body by Victoria AKA mom bra section? All the sexy lacy push uppy ones are A-C, much to the consternation of both an extremely small chested friend of mine (who had to fill out her VS A's with chicken cutlets) and a large chested friend (who tried to buy Miracle Bras in Cs and then remove the padding violently so it'd fit).

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

I know that their Semi-Annual Sale, which I have gone to in two difference locations this week, has enormous bins of bras in B and C and like one sad lonely section claiming to be "D-DD" that did appear to be nothing but Body by Victoria, which are hideous!!! You might as well buy "Just My Size" for that matter, it's a lot cheaper and looks virtually the same.

What I think is this: a lot of girls I know, when they buy push ups etc, buy those bras a size DOWN to begin with, because with brands like Wonderbra et al who actually seem to be sizing correctly, you figure out that you get even MORE ridiculous tit action by purchasing the smaller size. It seems VS realized people were doing this and just sized everything down a letter size, or something, because it just doesn't seem like their "unsexy" bras, the cotton stuff or the Body collection, have the same problem.

But it's fucking annoying!! They didn't used to do it and when it suddenly changed on me I thought I was losing my breasts or something rapidly!

xpost Dude if I had $7300 to spend on a bra I would just get it custom made.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

La Perla's not that expensive.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK???????????????????????????

I Think this has come CONSIDERABLY off-topic

This is a very SERIOUS issue, can you treat it with respect instead of rambling on about your designer clothes buying habits.

FOOLS!

Ainsworthy, Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

la perla??!! sure, if you want to take out a second mortgage for an underwire.

ally-if you ever become pregnant, prepare yourself for many an uncomfortable "fitting" for nursing bras. complete with help from a psychic nipple nazi who will decide what size you will need. horrifying!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

psychic nipple nazi

I never thought I'd see these words together. Surely the person with the lactating breasts has some say in the size dept.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

but you can't get bigger than a C at victoria's secret!

My girlfriend gets her bras at VS, and I don't think a C would cut it. I'll have to ask her if they hide them or something. Or maybe Victoria's Secrets in the midwest stock a wider range of sizes.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

what a bunch of self obsessed dumb consumerist merkins with no idea about world events, part of the problem natch

wittle, Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

what are these "world events" of which you speak? can you buy them near the food court?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Emily, dude, that sounds absolutely horrifying. Like you can't just fit it yourself, they have some magical technique the rest of us don't know!

xpost the VS catalog stocks D and DD, so you can order them online.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

OMG "psychic nipple nazi"!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Ad hominem (et feminem) attacks are the lowest kind of argument. Lazy, presumptuous, self-righteous, generalizations too are beneath contempt. Breasts on the other hand are not only the delightfully ornamental orbs which quicken my blood but the very spigot from which humanity, nay, all mammal fauna, derive our first nourishment, develop our first interpersonal bonds, and learn our first lessons.

nobody's even made a crap pun on this thread yet

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Only because nobody wants to make a tit of themselves.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Hooray there's another woman in the world who has the bottom-full rest-not-so-full problem with her breasts.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I prefer that to the dual-airbags look.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 6 January 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

If third-world debts were to be forgiven (to wrench this thread back to topic), cheap labor for the garment manufacturing industry would dry up. Excuse me, I need to go stockpile my favorite style of bras.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 7 January 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

How does that follow, j.lu?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 7 January 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't see that. The relationship between government debt and trade differential isn't that simple, ie, the economy needs to grow for wages to rise, but govt debt has little to do with a healthy economy (the US being the prime example of this over the past 20 years).

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Hooray there's another woman in the world who has the bottom-full rest-not-so-full problem with her breasts.

i see no problem there whatsoever.
