CONTEST OF THE CENTURY

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 7 January 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

the only boon christianity has left is an immunity from embarrassment, apparently.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 7 January 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately, i couldn't find the one of both calvin AND susie derkins praying

alas

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 7 January 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

does bill watterston not have a lawyer? what the fuck. the disney laws should do some good for someone.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I guessing whoever did the praying one has never actually seen a C&H strip.

robster (robster), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

I just saw the Calvin praying one recently in -- shocker -- Texas, and it spooked the shit out of me. I'd love to find one of Calvin pissing on a cross, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

"I'd love to find one of Calvin pissing on a cross, though."

Hahaha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Calvin peeing on the American flag would be pretty great too.

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Well it is Calvin's constitutional right to do so.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

See, so I have been troubled by the Calvin praying one because it's so completely offbase and untrue to character. But this is how it works: You hammer the idea that Calvin prays enough, and that becomes the truth, and people look back at the original strip and read a subtext of his inner spiritual life or eventual savlation, and it becomes part of the text, and the idea that Calvin is just not someone who would pray like that is lost, is forgotten. You just have to say things loudly enough and long enough for them to become true. And this is what Christianity has done for, oh, a few millennia now. It's very good at it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Calvin peeing on the American flag would be pretty great too. Or on an Earnhardt #3.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I doesn't help that the cross in the second decal is a sickly urine color. And the rendering of Calvin is -- pardon the pun -- rather piss poor.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I got stuck on the freeway behind an SUV with the Calvin praying decal the other day and it's probably a good thing that I don't own a firearm.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

who came first, the bart or the calvin?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

http://www.annoying.com/nightmares/obsessive/02/0001/0001.html

I'm not sure that it is particularly Calvin any more, though. If you look at the two pissers above, they aren't quick photoshop retouches, there isn't a line in common between them. And it's not like you have to know who Calvin is to get the point.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Things you can tell immediately if someone has a NO FEAR sticker on their car still

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else in the South seen that truck commercial where the pseudo-Calvin tries to piss on the Dodge Ram logo, and the Ram exhales plumes of smoke and knocks him out of the back window?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Or the Simpsons episode where Bart designs the novelty t-shirts, and Moe is at his homemade t-shirt stand attempting to make a purchase:

Moe: Do you have one with Calvin peeing on Hobbes?
Bart: No
Moe: Do you have one with Calvin peeing on anything?

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Where's the decal where R. Kelly's pissing on Calvin?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Where's the decal that lets everyone know I'm into watersports?

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

i've just spent like three minutes spitting doritos at the screen laughing at the calvin praying thing; had to explain the whole thing to englishboy

could someone that's less drunk than me please explain the whole thing? it's way beyond me.

i'll just say that i'm pretty sure that there was a 'calvin peeing' on my high school logo from those bastards at kalamazoo christian...boo. but seems like they need both, actually.

colette (a2lette), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Where's the decal where R. Kelly's pissing on Calvin?

Somebody says this, and you're laughing about Calvin praying?

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

The JD Power Customer Satisfaction Award goes to. . .the guy I saw the other day who had a Calvin-pissing-on-Ford-logo decal in the window of his Ford.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

I bet he owns one, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 January 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Round these parts, on rugby match day, you can get t-shirts upon which Bart Simpson is pissing on an England flag and saying something like "I LOVE TAKING A LEAK MAN!!!" Even if Bart wasn't drawn so he appears to be about eight feet tall, this still wouldn't make any real sense

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see one with John Calvin pissing on the Pope, or something like that.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

wait, are both John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes even considered Christian philosophers?

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Well, Calvin, to be sure. I don't know enough about Hobbes... he was mostly concerned with politics, but he might have dabbled in religious thought.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

It needs to stop NOW.

And just why do Democrats keep losing elections?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Hobbes actually pissed off most Christians, and there actually is a term (less known than Calvinism, obv) "Hobbism," but it was pretty universally frowned on by them moral types.

I dunno if that's the reason Waterson stuck the two of them together in the first place or not.

Hobbes' main philosophical stuff was all that state of nature and social contract stuff. You know, "Life in the state of nature is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short," war isn't in man's best interest, blah blah social contract blah.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

i'm just wondering about the conceptual leap of taking a comic icon, from a strip that'd stopped publishing years before out of all things and bootlegging it into a overly Christian image, which never really had anything to do with the vibe or feel of the actual comic.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

This wouldn't be the first time Christians did this. I distinctly remember an assload of Christian stuff involving Snoopy and other Peanuts characters when I was in Sunday school in the early 80s. (Although that strip was still in the Sunday papers and on holiday television at the time, of course.)

I have a tendency to stereotype the kinds of Christians who would put such a sticker on their vehicle as completely vacuous hypocritical morons, but even if I'm not giving them enough credit, I seriously doubt any of them put 2 and 2 together and got 4 when it came to recognizing Calvin's original namesake as a pretty [historically] important Protestant philosopher. I'm betting it was more like some Baptist soccer mom deciding that she'd had enough with the decadent peeing Calvins and fighting back in the ultimate display of brinkmanship. (i.e. My Calvin is holier than thine Calvin.)

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

hmm. there's that. but also, remember that Charles Schulz had put overtly religious and christian material in the strip(and the TV specials) before, so i don't think the leap was as much.

now i'm reminded of stories of u.s. soldiers in vietnam decorating their helmets with various Peanuts characters doing profane things.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

also, maybe we'll get lucky and someone will make a Calvin peeing on a darwin lizard eating a christ fish

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

a southern california favorte: calvin peeing on 'la migra'

john, a resident of chicago. (john s), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

How about one where Calvin is praying with an open bible, but Hobbes is pissing onto the pages of his bible, spelling out "NO FEAR."

Awesome.
