I don't think there are any without fees.

World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights, and Final Fantasy XI are among the best, according to my sources.

You could always play old MUDs and BBS RPGs (like LotRD, or Tradewars), if you're interested in going back in time to 1989.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

phil, wanna start playing with me and greg? im trying to find a game online with a shitload of players so we can be slutty and kill people.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

can i do this LORD on a mac?

Holly (an appletross), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

im all for being slutty and killing. also, lets look for a Barren Realms Elite game

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Holly, if you're fine with text-based, MUDs can be really fun. Aardwolf is the best one I found, and generally has around 300 players online.

I think there are a couple graphical ones (a la World of Warcraft) that are free, but they're mostly a bit crummy. You could always join betas?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am totally pumped about L.O.R.D.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have Dink Smallwood in a box in storage. No pc to play it on...
Mandee & GP if I can do LORD on mac I'll play with you guys.

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure it'll work on a mac, M said that's how she used to play it BACK IN THE DAY I think!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ok this is ubernerdy but I just remembered I used to post on the message board for dink smallwood, and one time the main guy that designed it (I forget his name) was looking for a ROM of Time Lord for NES and I hooked him up. Hah.

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ok his name was Seth Robinson

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but i was dialing up on Z-dial or whatever that program was called for macs for BBSing geekwads.

And it was 1993.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you are OLD SCHOOL

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Tradewars and LotRD running on my BBS from 1992-4.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

omg i used to play tradewars too.

I never really got hooked on it, though, like I did with LORD.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

you ran a bbs? was it WaReZ?!?

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't WaReZ, but it was pretty 31337.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in one of those nerdy ANSI groups back in my BBS days. I used to be cool.

major jingleberries (jingleberries), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh i used to be in a warez games cracking/releasing group. and also a warez courier group. har-har so nerdy.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

gawd you guys.

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

is an ANSI group like, a club where you make pics of boobs in flashing ANSI text?

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of warez appealed to me back in the day. The spelling and erstwhile capitalization of it was (just like it is now) fucking retarded.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, ANSI is still cool!

papa november (papa november), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I took a computer class, that year (1993), and learned visual basic, or maybe it was just basic, and programmed some stupid flashing ANSI thing that organized my CD collection.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I did something similar in a woodworking class.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't own a PC until 1998. I begged and pleaded for one as a kid, but we were poor....

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of ansi groups did graphics for bbs. like menus, welcome pics, fonts and that kind of stuff. I was only moderately talented so I stuck to doing fonts.

http://www.ice.org/search.php

click on apox as 'artist' and you can see most of my output. You could also type in various other ice doods like 'toon goon' or 'tempus thales' to check out the medium in various forms..

major jingleberries (jingleberries), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You're apox?! Wow, someone in my fine art class last semester mentioned you and your work in a talk they did about ANSI.

papa november (papa november), Saturday, 8 January 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

finally, the recognition I deserve.

www.runescape.com is free

Just don't talk to anyone else on there, ever. Or try to actually roleplay.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Saturday, 8 January 2005 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Anarchy Online is free until January 15. It's definitely worth a look.

holojames (holojames), Saturday, 8 January 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess we could all play LORD here, right?

http://lord.nuklear.org/

This is a Seth Robinson game too? Well, I'll be.
