Well I like seeing films with other people. I haven't got around to The Incredibles yet, so I thought I might go to a 6.35 screening at the Odeon on Tottenham Court Road sometime this coming week. Anyone fancy joining me? (Time and place negotiable, of course)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 January 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

i still want to see that but i live in Devon.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 8 January 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

what a great movie that is.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 8 January 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

ILX film club! This a great idea Martin, I'm surprised no one thought of it before. Obviously I'm not going to be making this one sadly. When is Team America out?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 8 January 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

No idea (I have been hopelessly out of touch with such things for ages). There's also a new Alexander Payne coming soon, and after Schmidt and Election, I definitely want to see that.

This isn't intended to be as informal as a film club, just a way for people to go together rather than apart a bit more often.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

informal=formal, sorry...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Team America is out next week, Sideways (the Alexander Payne) is a fortnight afterwards.

I'm developing a chip on my shoulder about The Incredibles: people say to me "this is a great movie!" and I get to thinking, "yeah, actually, politics aside there are a lot of great things about it". And then say "so much better than Finding Nemo!" and I realise I've been talking to a crazy person.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 8 January 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Stroheim Retrospective at LACMA, screening Friday and Saturday nights, January 21 through February 12, at 7:30.

youn, Saturday, 8 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

why are the politics of The Incredibles not good Andrew? er, maybe save this for another thread... (i only saw it last week otherwise i'd probably join you Martin).

it's a good idea anyway - i'd like to be notified when good foreign films are on that i would probably miss otherwise, as well as the usual well-covered American 'talkies'.

we should go to the Curzon and the NFT often...

Stevem On X (blueski), Saturday, 8 January 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

stevem, as jim pointed out as we left the incredibles last week, it's a bit 'you people really shouldn't use your powers (guns) but then it's actually ok to use your powers (guns), you were right all along, nobody should have tried to stop you, and we were wrong all along. please, please use your powers (guns).'

i just got the UGC unlimited pass thingy, so i'm happy to go see movies there like anytime for 'free'.

and toby says 'same for me.' (he has the pass thing, too. not powers [guns {that i know of}])

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 9 January 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

uh, if you have problems with the politics in the Incredibles, I can't see why on earth you'd want to see Team America

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 9 January 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

From what I hear, Team America isn't really as Libertarian as its creators: they're too fond of the joke. I'd like The Incredibles a lot more if it was as funny as South Park The Movie.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 9 January 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Any SF ILXers should come and see Moolaade with me and Alex on Monday night!

.adam (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 January 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Anyone wanting to hit any of the cinemas in the Leicester Sq-to-Tottenham Ct area should let me know (quality of film negotiable. Martin, I haven't seen the Incredibles, but I need assurances about its worth).

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd be v much up for this (but not for The Incredibles)

(definitely for Vanity Fair when it gets released though)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I'd like The Incredibles a lot more if it was as funny as South Park The Movie.

Weird, because SP:TM didn't make me laugh much at all, while TI did. I like SP the series, but the movie didn't do much for me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

does anyone else in nyc not have a day job and want to come see movies at the sunshine theatre which is a couple blocks from my house? during the afternoon

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

'you people really shouldn't use your powers (guns) but then it's actually ok to use your powers (guns), you were right all along, nobody should have tried to stop you, and we were wrong all along. please, please use your powers (guns).'

i'm not sure, it's such a broad concept and easy to read several things into it - i read it on the simpler level of exceptional people shouldn't feel bad about being exceptional when others are not as long as they remain 'humble' about it. they just seemed to be following comic-book superhero politics as they've always been.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

(not that comic-book superhero series aren't rife with political undercurrents...but these are 'accidental' as much as they are intended the way i see it)

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Aw man! Martin, if you'd started this thread on Friday we'd have seen if you wanted to come to the Odeon on Holloway Road to see the Incredibles on Saturday afternoon. Which we went to see and it was a lot of fun. Planning on seeing House of Flying Daggers in the near future though - this thread will be useful.

Not sure why people are reading quite so much into the politics of TI, unless it's to attempt to distance themselves from going, "Ooh, lookit, pretty pretty colours and shapes."

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 10 January 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Anyone wanna see Elektra? Sometime, like the 11am Saturday morning showing at somewhere like Shepherd's Bush or something.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Skidmore, if you have indeed watched the Incredibles please post your thoughts on it somewhere! Thank you.

Huk-L, Monday, 10 January 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Not yet - I'm thinking of Wednesday. Barima, it's a new Pixar film, it's superheroes, and Pete reckons it will be the one where they are finally acknowledged with a Best Movie Oscar nomination. The friends of mine who've seen it say it's great. Join me!

Liz, I'd be very keen on joining you for House Of Flying Daggers, even in Holloway!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Mart, Weds isn't good for me at all. Liz, I need to see both Hero and HofFD, might do the former in the next few days.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm very happy to switch to Thursday if that would suit you, Barima.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

youn -- I'm up for Blind Husbands or Foolish Wives, FWIW.

Remy IS THE Snush (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Okay, Tom May recommended Greed on the I Love Films board.

youn, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Hrm, drop me an email to remind me? Greed is good, but I haven't seen either of theo other two.

Remy IS THE Snush (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Revive because I still haven't seen House Of Flying Daggers, so might go to the Odeon on Wardour Street for a 6.05 show one day; and I want to see The Life Aquatic too, which is on lots of places. Anyone fancy joining me for either? I favour Thursday or Friday, but could be persuaded towards Monday or Wednesday.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

No to Weds, yes to Thursday. I thought it was off Wardour St, but the Curzon in Mayfair still has shows.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 6 March 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i am open and up for this generally (but not this next week sadly)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 6 March 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Which do you more want to see, Barima? Thursday is good for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I would like to see The Life Aquatic, yes, and am free Thu and Fri of this week. But. How much are tickets at these particular cinemas? My reaction to most London cinema prices has been to have a Massive Sulk and refuse to see films AT ALL, THEN. (however, most locals are almost cheap enough, plus there are always various offers on.) So if it's over a fiver... probably not.

seriously. over six quid for a film is WRONG.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Central cinemas will be more than that. It's on at the Screen On The Green too, on Upper Street - I don't recall if that is any cheaper, and though it's convenient for me, I'm not sure about you and Barima.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 March 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Alex is otm, tho' even when I could see films for cheap (ie, before 4pm), I haven't. Mart, I'd prefer to see House of...more, tho' I don't mind both. The girl at work I crush on told me she walked out of TLA after 20 mins, which may in fact bode well. Which Upper St - Islington?

(Alex, you should come to the Cut Copy gig on Tues at Cargo. I've hid my copy of yesterday's The Knowledge safely away BTW)

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Well, House... is only on at the Odeon Wardour Street (6.05 preferred for me, also 8.35) and the Broadway in Catford, which isn't on for me. It'll be vanishing soon, so I am pleased to go to that one this week.

Life Aquatic has only just started and is all over the centre right now, so less urgency on that - if Mark fancies that next week, there is no risk putting it off until then.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Peckham's not THAT far away and it's only £3...which has put me off paying to see general release films anywhere else

can't believe i still haven't seen Team America

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't really want to see about House Of... any more, also any cinema is convenient for more right now.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Gotta point there, Steve (you on for Tuesday?).

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I would be willing to travel to Peckham to see The Life Aquatic or indeed The Woodsman - also I still haven't seen Vera Drake yet but would like to. Not on Tuesday/Wednesday though.

The Orange two-for-one offer on Wednesdays is really good - or at least was, until Desperate Housewives started. and my DH nights >>>> any film ever.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Alex, maybe I might come round on Weds...my DH nights suck.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

feel free! my DH nights rock. Marianna, Ria et moi. Food and drink welcome. I will email you closer to the time. I warn you - they can get very camp.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Very Bree van de Kamp, that is to say.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Peckham would seem a very good idea if, to take a random hypothetical case, I had a girlfriend in the area, Steve. As it is, it's not too bad from town, but it's a fair old way back to Tottenham afterwards.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

What's the damage on Lambeth Bridge - Peckham?

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Well it's worth bearing in mind if anyone's after the cheap option and they have a little more time than usual. You don't have to spend the night there.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Sunday, 6 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

So, Barima (and anyone else): are we on for House Of Flying Daggers at the Odeon Wardour Street on Thursday, preferably the 6.05 show for me?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

revive, as it slipped off New Answers.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Man, I will have to literally dive in and out Forbidden Planet before I make the flick, Mart.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Is that time okay? There is a later show, at 8.35, but I'd prefer the earlier one.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

If I leave the office at 5 - 5.15, I should be able to get there just to check if they have any new Marvel Legends in is all. Doubt it's a prob.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

I could definitely be tempted by HOFD. From the Odeon website it looks like it's only a fiver. Result! NB I will probably have just had my hair cut so no-one is allowed to laugh at me looking stoopid.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Also: Tarkovsky season at the Nat Film Theatre starting RIGHT NOW. Stalker is intriguing and based on a Strugatsky Brothers weirdo SF novel (Roadside Picnic.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Liz, if you come tomorrow, I may repay the favour and do an NFT flick with you (reviews pending, I know nothing of Tarkovsky).

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

I am not sure I will be tempted by HOFD, I can't seem to muster up as much enthusiasm for it as when it first came out.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm up for HOFD tomorrow.

Tarkovsky: Fancy seeing Stalker for same reasons as Liz (I fell asleep last time I tried to watch Solaris mind). Also, I work round the corner from the NFT and have not yet been in there.

lock robster (robster), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I live near the NFT, but the last time I went, Bush was president.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Dada, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Meet outside the cinema just before? I am unconvinced by Barima's email here, so if you want my mobile number, email me (work email: m.skidmore@ucl.ac.uk). Liz I know already has my number.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

or inside, if the weather demands.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I hope this movie watching trend continues, as in future months I may attend some viewings, that'd be nice, I think. I have seen HOFD, and have commitments re: Life Aquatic, and Miss Congeniality 2 (Armed and Fabulous), and XxX2 (Armed and Fabulous).

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

who will come to the cinema with me?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Mart, I will be there, but if I still show up by 6.15, all we'll have missed are trailers. I'd leave my e-mail, but I won't have a chance to check tomo before coming.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the film won't start until 6.15, 6.20. I do like seeing the trailers. I can't remember the layout of this cinema, but if we do go in before you get there, I will want to sit towards the front, if possible, because my eyes aren't so great for subtitles at any distance.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Whereabouts on Wardour St is the Odium - I guess above Shaftesbury Avenue? Meeting at 6ish is fine by me btw.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh, my bad, it's no. 10, right down at the bottom by Leicester Square. Hmm, haircut or Fopp, Fopp or haircut...?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

http://www.cambridgefilmfestival.org.uk/images/fopp-logo.gif

Hello Liz, why not come an browse my racks. Oh go on, just a little look...

FOPP (robster), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

AVAUNT! You saucy bitch.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm told there is a good sale at Music Zone on Oxford Street, including lots of 2000AD collections at about £3. Actually I'm told that about the Birmingham outlet, but I am hoping it is also true of this one. I also might pop down to Piccadilly Circus to buy a tennis racket.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll see you there.

BARMS, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations, Film Club! To our first success, and many more. If every film we wanted to see screened on Wardour St, we'd never need the Peckham option.

I'm thinking of hitting Curzon Soho for Somersault on Monday evening, which, I believe, is a fiver too.

BARMS, Friday, 11 March 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Get you, swankypants.

The pretty hackslashstab was great entertainment. Glad I got to see it on a large(ish) screen.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

ha, we walked out of somersault after an hour last night. first film i've walked out of in ages. hurrah for ugc unlimited, so it didn't feel like we were getting ripped off.

also, i want to go and see stalker. i've failed to make myself go and see it several times before, though, and i've still never been to the nft, so the odds on me actually doing so are perhaps not all that great.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Tobes, it doesn't exactly strike me as a date movie, but please, expand on your resons for walking.

BARMS, Friday, 11 March 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Toby, we're going to go see Stalker at some point - would it encourage you to have meeting-up plans with people? The NFT scares me also, mind.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

yes, i think it would, liz, although i'm quite busy at the mo... have you got as far as thinking of a day yet?

somersault: it was very boring. it seemed to think that looking at the main character slightly out of focus was somehow enough to carry the film. it was nothing like lantana.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

but yeah, mostly it was very boring.

i fear stalker will be, too, but i've been told that you have to sit through the whole thing cos the last 5 mins makes it worth it...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Pity Toby, as it gets better (its one of my favourite films of the year). Did you walk before or after the cowpoke boyfriend did TEH KISS (which threw things up in the air more than a bit).

I demand you use your UGC unlimited card to go see the last half hour.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

the nft scares me cos one of the doors ALWAYS gives me an electric shock. 'stalker': good background stuff. never watched it but it creates a 'mood'.

N_RQ, Friday, 11 March 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

before, i think? we walked out when they'd gone to dinner, just after his friends had taken the piss out of her for working at the bp garage.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, it all gets much less predictable after that.

Actually i would like to know how you think the film ends, lets see how predicatble the film was (I have to admit that at the point you walked out I was a lot less sold on it than I finally became).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Stalker is a great film - one of my three favourite SF films ever. Utterly compelling along the way, so don't imagine you're just waiting for a thrilling end.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Hey dudes, Robster & I are probably going to see Stalker at the NFT this Wednesday. Anyone else fancy it? We'd be going to the 20:00 showing.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

My mum will probably be at that!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I've seen it a few times, and love it. Also, I am out tomorrow night (friend's birthday party), and Thursday at Poptimism,

Anyone fancy a trip to Life Aquatic sometime soon? After Thursday, that is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Booyah! Wacky European mythic supermarionation, anyone? On at the Wardour St (cheapie) artyfarty Odeon next week, we though we might have a look.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
a poignant revival, but I was wondering if anyone might like to join me to see Unleashed or possibly Jet Li Unleashed next week sometime? I think it might be my last chance before it goes.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I am thinking of seeing it at http://www.londonnet.co.uk/cinema/westendvue.html this central cinema at 6.50 on Thursday, if anyone is interested.
