are these things that you eat in the grocery store, like, before you pay for them? because those bins of candy and fig newtons are like, free snacks to me

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

canned alphabet soup

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I hate the grocery store. It's creepy. I'm in and out, no time for larceny. But I haven't had fig newtons in forever. I'll add them to my list. (that's I guess what this is about.)

anonymous poster, Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

so otherwise all you guys eat out every night?

grocery stores = creepy?

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

grocery stores aren't at all creepy, they're grat! i hate all types of shopping, except grocery shopping.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

grat!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I am creeped out by them. Sensory overload plus imagining the sadness of the lives of the old people I usually see shopping. (my grocery store is by a retirement home. whenever I'm in there I imagine me in 60 years. that's why I shop fast.)

anonymous poster, Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

That's awful, anon. Just make sure to only shop at stores where you're surrounded by luscious fashionable young people.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I love this title thread.. it sounds like a John Trubee prank call.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

i get sensory overload at the mall and at BIG LOTS. but not from produce, no sir.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

donut christ it sounds horrible and I am a dick I know but I am shy about old people. At least when there's a lot of them. I like all ages stores. If I had a car I would drive to one.

anonymous poster, Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

do you live in santa rosa, ca?

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

anonymous poster, are you embarassed about your feelings about grocery stores for some reason?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I live in Madison, WI. I am embarrassed about many things. Not sure why. But I will stop discussing me. I'm more interested in grocery list suggestions.

anonymous poster, Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Weird, I remember going to a Trader Joe's around Madison, and it was pretty vibrant and young to me! Then again, my focus was to buy several bottles of Spotted Cow beer, as that beer is the best I've ever had, so maybe I was wearing rose-shaded glasses.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

this is what i bought 2 hours ago:
tempeh
tofu
maypo oatmeal
broccoli
spinach
yogurt
granola
apple juice
dental floss

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Spotted Cow is one of the best Wisconsin beers! I just shared two pitchers last night at Cuenique. If you haven't tried Capitol Amber yet that hits the spot too.

(by the way I don't know where Trader's Joe's is. i shop at Cap Foods. there are young and vibrant people there but not always.)

Yogurt is a good idea caitlin oh no (caitx...), January 9th, 2005. Will add to list. Strawberry/banana.

anonymous poster, Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm about to go buy
potatoes
brown onions
curry powder
tofu
bell peppers

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

It's funny that no motherfucker here needs toilet paper.

do you EAT toilet paper?

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 9 January 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

This is the food I purchased last go-'round at the grocery store:

gala apples
plums
eggplant
cucumbers
avocados
tomatoes
iceberg lettuce
cabbage
grapes
whole wheat bread
corn tortillas
olive oil
mayonnaise
black olives
canned tuna (chunk light, packed in water)
two cans of Wolf brand chili
two cans of pinto beans
two cans of whole kernel sweet corn
two cans of cut green beans
two small cans of tomato sauce
a container of sugar-free Tang
a box of Life cereal
a container of Quaker quick-cooking oatmeal
Equal
a large bag of Bugles
a six-pack of (already made) sugar-free Jello cups (in strawberry & black cherry flavors)
1/2 gallon of 1% milk
1 1/2 dozen large eggs
a package of bacon
a package of Oscar Meyer weiners
a package of mild cheddar cheese
a 12-pack of Diet Coke

And that's pretty much an accurate assessment of what we'd normally purchase at the store, except for some weekends when I/we get something pre-made from the good folks at Marie Callender, and/or when we go to another store to pick up some cheap meat ($3.00 for two big packages of chicken = BARGAIN), and/or when we feel the need to get lunch meat.

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 9 January 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

My boyfriend works for Whole Foods. Maybe that's all I need to say.

aimurchie, Sunday, 9 January 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from Whole Foods:

1 red onion
1 loaf rosemary potato bread
2 hot Italian pork sausages
1 bag "lite" muesli-type cereal from the bins
2 frozen dinners (Tesoros brand, a Thai one and an Italian one)

There's good eatin' tonight!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

whole foods is too yuppiefied for me these days. My standard list:

bananas
apples
collard greens (for the lizard)
bag of salad spring mix
cherry tomatoes
tortillas
wheat bread
skim milk
cereal
many cans of black beans and blackeyed peas
hot sauce/salsa
Drumsticks
beer
Diet Dr Pepper
spring water
ramen
turkey lunchmeat
sharp cheddar cheese
regular lays
microwave popcorn (homestyle or honey butter)

yep, that about covers me.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one here that buys 2% (cow) milk?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

"whole foods is too yuppiefied for me these days"

Whole Foods is cultural elitism at its best and worst. Sometimes I wonder if people have planned their outfits before they went shopping. How did you get that "just left the woodpile" je-ne-sais-quois with the whitest teeth I've seen since People magazine?
Anyway, we get a 20% discount, and i get domestic partner benefits. So I LOVE WF!
But i hate going there. it always makes me mad.

aimurchie, Monday, 10 January 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Purchased earlier today:

Bananas
Yogurt
1 onion
Broccoli

The last two are going into a big pot of soup; I cooked the broth for this earlier today from the remains of a turkey.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

2% milk here. Skim is too watery; whole milk is too rich for just drinking, not rich enough to enrich sauces.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

You are my brother.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

I love grocery stores, the bigger the better!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

grocery- product - bulk - produce -seafood- meat - dairy -grocery - in that order. Trucks give food to stores.

aimurchie, Monday, 10 January 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

WF is not bad if you discriminate. I buy wine there (6 at a time to get 10% off) and the produce is good (Trader Joe's is pretty weak in this area). And my WF is not full of yuppies, or not so that I'd notice, anyway. I went there today because of the sausage, and picked up a few other things.

And I use non-fat milk for my cereal. I weaned myself off whole over the course of a few years - 2%, then 1%, then non-fat. When the store is out of skim and I buy 1% it seems decadently rich.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

I work for W!ld Oats, but I never shop there.

My shopping list is always the following:

Gala, Fuji, or Braeburn Apples
Green Grapes
Nonfat milk
Morningstar farms veggie corn dogs
A bunch of those microwaveable diet lunch thingies
Diet soda
Cereal
Pasta
Bottled water
Cheese

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 10 January 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

I hate how there's so much packaged food and so little cheap produce here in the US. I didn't really become aware of this until my foreign-born girlfriend pointed it out, but now I hate it.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 10 January 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, as I mentioned above, I work for a chain organic retailer that happens to own a lot of little stores that are not W.O. in Southern CA and the produce there is ridiculously cheap compared to the prices here in CO. It's NOT FAIR.
