three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and that no team coached by marty schottenheime will ever go to the super bowl.

but who will it be, in the end?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 9 January 2005 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

or marty schottenheimer, even.

my dream superbowl = jets v. eagles. though i think that it will be the steelers that will represent the AFC this year. and the eagles will win it all (terrell or no).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 9 January 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it certainly wont be any team from the nfc.

i think that pittsburgh will do it this year.

I love that group that did the Rams game! They do the Sunday night games on ESPN, and I'm pretty sure I've heard them clinking bottles together during games.

Today's games were shockingly decent.
Seattle scarfs it yet again -- on what else? A dropped pass.

WHO WAS THE CRACKHEAD DOING THE RAMS GAME
At the end of the game they were fighting in the book to be the first to suck Holmgren's cock, "Holmgren's one of the greatest coaches in the game ... they'd be nuts not to bring him back next year ... the team is young and improving, they'll be back in the playoffs next year ...".

Er, HEY DIPSHITS, HOLMGREN'S NOW IN YEAR SIX OF A FIVE-YEAR PLAN TO OVERHAUL THE SEAHAWKS, AND HE'S YET TO WIN A PLAYOFF GAME.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My Chargers laid an egg in overtime.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 January 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Disaster! "The Sport Reporters," which I usually watch, includes Stephen A. Smith this morning in the Chargers/Seahawks autopsies. Mute button mute button mute button!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck both the Rams and the Jets as they apparently conspired to keep my beloved Saints out of the playoffs. Cocksuckers. As such I am left rooting for the Colts and their wildly inconsistent (and frightening) play style.

adam (adam), Sunday, 9 January 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

but Madden is right about that! it's incredibly horseshit stupid to basically give up once you are in field goal range.

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 9 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally pumped! They might even start showing games here before 3am! Imagine.

Barry's NFL-watchage is another Canadian worry ticked off my list.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but canadian football is supposed to be totally rad!!! he's a goddamn traitor izwhatheiz!!

let's talk about how mike martz is the most arrogant, priggish, smuggish, crybaby wussiest sonofabitch in the galaxy. god i want to punch his fucking face in. i mean he's great for shedding the west coast (which is/was killing the nfl, seriously) but...what a fucking pompous pussy.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Canadian football is good too! You'll have to pay attention to both. But be prepared to see nothing but Bills games when Sunday rolls around (at least in Toronto).

Don't worry about Martz -- he'll get duly squashed by Philly next week.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't even realised there was a CFL! *sweet*

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's really awesome! they have extra-wide fields for added zigzagging and teams with names like the ARGONAUTS. but i know aboslutely nothing about it other than that.

wow denver is already getting steamrolled.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are peeing all over the Denver secondary. I could probably go do a couple hours of errands and not miss anything...

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Channel 5,
Plz show this instead of 'A Knight In Camelot'. Also maybe rerun Popular?
Cheers, Greg

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(sigh, so I found out that itv2 had bought the playoffs off five and got excited and went downstairs and switched to itv2 and they were showing football and I thought "awesome" and then suddenly they were all "NFL! PLAYOFFS! HIGHLIGHTS! MONDAY! 8-9!". Grah.)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"highlights"

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, though.

at least the second game has a chance of being interesting.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Canadian football summarized : twelve to a side, wider and longer field, deeper endzone, three downs, larger ball.

Since there are only three downs, it's a more passing-intensive game, which results in higher scoring games compared to the NFL.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Manning, 360 yards passing IN THE FIRST HALF OMG.

Interesting to watch players late in their careers doing tryouts for their broadcasting careers after their playing days are over. I've heard Strahan in radio interviews and he's usually great, but he was a bit fumfumfuh yesterday on ABC. Jerome Bettis on ESPN this morning was excellent, and by comparison Michael Ervin is revealed again as a screaming mass of hamburger.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I consider Irvin to be the Flavor Flav of ESPN's NFL coverage. Meanwhile, Chris Berman is the Weird Al Yankovic.

not quite

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

he made a mooning gesture without taking his pants off. the announcers apologized profusely.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Culpepper to Moss (again) for the TD, then Moss goes to the goalposts and pretends to pull down his pants and moon the crowd. Joe Buck's "That's disgusting" makes me think that Buck thought Moss was pretending to take a shit on the Frozen Tundra.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The announcers can stop apologizing for Randy Moss and his not-at-all-vulgar celebration dance (it looked like he was just rubbing his ass up against the goalpost like cats sometimes do to their scratching posts) any time now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Owens was so good in that game. It's a shame that the Eagles couldn't have won, because he was the best player on the field by a mile.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

they looked fucking tired out there towards the end. soooooo sloooooooow. agonizing. i can't even bring myself to hate the patriots. they played a good game and they weren't doing much of anything for 3 quarters. it was the eagle's game to win. i go back to the end of the 2nd quarter. eagles get the ball back with 4 or 5 minutes left and they cough it right up again and the pats score 7. they hold on to the ball and they blank the champions for half a football game. coulda changed things.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

o plz owens is better than brady, new joe montana my ass

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he probably is, but being a great QB is more important that being a great receiver which is why Brady has the ring and Owens is getting a cup of Campbell's Chunky Soup from Donovan's mom.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Were you guys watching the same game I was? I saw the Pats defense badly outplay the Eagles offense, Brady badly outplay McNabb, and the Pats running game badly outplay the Eagles running game. What's left?

It shouldn't have been that close. The Pats uncharacteristically lost the ball once inside the 10, and had to settle for a FG when they had first and goal from the three. They should have had another seven or ten points. The only reason the game was close was because the Philly receivers kept bailing out McNabb by somehow reigning in sloppy/risky throw after sloppy/risky throw.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

I called it back on the 17th of January. They're calling plays in to McNabb. There was no sense of urgency IMO amongst the coaching staff, and Andy Reid has to take the blame for that. McNabb will win one eventually...I guess they need to learn the hard way.

So, who bet against the Pats again?
-- daria g (daria_gra...), February 7th, 2005 9:44 PM.

um, yeah Daria, I did .. as JB said .. to NOT cover the spread. Which they didn't.

Still, it feels ... what's the term? Phyrric victory? No, that's not the correct metaphor. HOLLOW victory i guess. I really, really wanted the Eagles to win. I feel for the people of the great city of Philadelphia, I really do. Some of the best people I've ever met are from Philly. Still ... the city seems cursed. I'm also a McNabb fan. I never never in a million years would have thought that the reason the Eagles would lose would be due to poor play by McNabb. Frankly, he was awful.

As others mentioned upthread -- I have never seen a more putrid two-minute offense. What in god's name were the Eagles DOING out there on those last two drives? It's like they were having a card game in between plays or something. I've never seen such an appalling lack of urgency in such a high stakes situation. Geez. such unpreparedness. Maybe Andy Reid ISN'T all that. And maybe, yeah, Belichick really IS a genius. Shit, who knows. The Patriots really are something, though.

Oh well. Props to TO on a great, great performance. You have to respect that guy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

oh and Sir Paul was fun. I liked his performance.

I never never in a million years would have thought that the reason the Eagles would lose would be due to poor play by McNabb.

Why? They lost three NFC title games in large part due to crappy playing by McNabb.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

meh. I guess so. he was hot though, coming in to this one.

anyway, I went 8-3. what's your record tough guy?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I think everyone went 8-3. I went 8-3. My friends all went 8-3. My dog went 8-3.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

One of the ones I missed though (the Patriot/Indy game) makes me hate my record. And I was kind of rooting for the Eagles, but in my heart I knew it weren't to be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

8-3 AGAINST THE SPREAD. that's, um, kind of the key point

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

anyway, I am happy for Tom Brady. God bless him. I still don't think he's really that great of a quarterback!! But, what can I say, results are results. Dude is just a phenomenon. He really is. I have this female friend -- she's pretty much my best friend, we've been very very close since we were about 14 years old -- and she HATES sports. She's not into it at all. She also lives in Boston. She think Brady is HOTT. She's a big fan. The guy has big appeal. As well he should!! he's a really nice guy. And as a Michigander and a Wolverine fan, well .. as much as I was rooting for Philly tonite .. I am definitely happy for Tom.

Tom will probably be in the hall of fame now. Incredible. Unthinkable, for those of us who are devoted to Michigan football. But good for him. I'm happy for him.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

god I really love Alex's bad-assitude tho, rereading that post.

Like his fucking DOG could go 8-3 AGAINST THE SPREAD. Seriously Alex, how fucking thick are you? You think I would come on here and boast about picking straight-up winners? Do you have any fukcing idea how hard it is to win consistently against the spread? that's the whole fucking point. jackass

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, i know, I sound like a jackass even saying that. but dude I know what it is like to write a check for a dime to a bookie. It hurts. It hurts really, really bad. But this year, for once, I kicked some serious ass. and I'm gonna go get myself a steak this week.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

diamond when you say write a check for a dime do you literally mean write a check for ten cents?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

haha sorry i'm just loving that image - "that's a roosevelt i coulda used this week man". anyhow i gotta friend who's been on some crazy streak gambling lately, winning parleys left and right, you'd think i'd maybe just copy him or at least take some advice but instead i go it on my own and follow such instincts as "schottenheimer's due". cuh-rist.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

james ... you card you! i LITERALLY mean i have actually lived through the very PAINFUL experience of writing out a check for TEN BUCKS to "my guy". Let's put it that way.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

anyway, I went 8-3. what's your record tough guy?

I wasn't gambling on the games, but if I had been (i.e. going with what my choices were at the time), I would have gone 6-5.

I think one's 8-3 gambling record is *slightly* compromised when one bets three times against the eventual champs :)

(yeah, I know the Pats didn't cover)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Michigan football is weird thing. Big-time college programs in general are a weird thing. I mean, you wouldn't BELIEVE the kind of abuse Brady came in for when he was there. heck, you wouldn't believe the kind of abuse Brian Griese came in for when he was there! And he ended up winning a national championship!! It's unreal.

There is SO SO much pressure on these kids. I can't even imagine. College football is WAY more insane than the NFL. Like, you think any BiG-TIME College program would put up with that bullshit two-minute drill that the Eagles displayed tonite?? No way!! Andy Reid would be out on his ass tomorroW!!!

IT's insane, though. College sports are insane. How about that John Navarre kid? Nice guy, did the best he could ... but the way the Wolverine "supporters" ripped into him ... I wouldn't be surprised to find him dead in a ditch tomorrow. fucking insanity, it really is.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

well yeah, of the twenty largest non-racetrack stadiums in the us seventeen are college football stadiums.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey, uh, Stormy Davis...sorry I called you Jim before. I confused you with the Australian dude. Really doesn't make much sense that I would do that other than that you both have electric in your email addresses.

Now that I've had some time to think about it, the game mostly sucked. I think I'll just write what I'm thinking about it in my blog as I don't feel like debating it, but I will say that I'm kinda glad the Eagles lost in a strange way. They'll still be the NFC pick for the Super Bowl next year so they should get another crack at it and hopefully they will have learned from this.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

yeah both teams stand a strong shot at being back - nfc the panthers will be back and atlanta will still be strong (though next season's when we hold our breath - the falcons have NEVER posted back-to-back winning seasons. HISTORY WILL BE MADE.), maybe bucs improve enough, maybe some other team jumps out, but still eagles gotta be the strong favorite. in the afc the steelers might be losing bettis, plaxico might plaxigo, and to be honest we still don't really know if big ben's for real. he might be one of those steelers qbs the fans are crazy excited about one season and then two seasons later they don't like you to bring their names up (cf. every steelers qb since tb), the colts offense surely won't be as strong, cedric benson or cadillac might be their starting rb next year for all we know, plus i'll believe it when i see it. outside of maybe the bills i don't really buy anyone else maybe looking better poised than the pats next year.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

JACKSONVILLE, FL—Although NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue declared the Super Bowl XXXIX experiment with in-game product placement a success, fans and players expressed mixed feelings about the championship game Monday.

http://premium.theonion.com/images/archives/424/article3110.jpg
Above: McNabb attempts to go long with a two-liter bottle of refreshing Pepsi in the third quarter.
"Don't get me wrong—this year's Super Bowl was an exciting face-off," said Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, whose team was defeated 24-21 in a hard-fought contest. "The Patriots only got 331 yards on our defense, mostly because it took us a while to adjust to tackling players doused in Axe Deodorant Bodyspray For Men. But you can be sure they felt the heat of our Ford Motor Company sponsored Lincoln Mark LT blitzes. Our nose tackle drove this season's hottest new luxury truck straight into their offensive line."

In spite of complaints from football fans, Super Bowl XXXIX was a tremendous financial success, with an estimated audience of 2 billion worldwide and a sponsorship revenue exceeding $820 million.

Advertisers as diverse as H&R Block, Verizon, and FTD paid top dollar to have their products and logos used or represented during game play.

"It was great for the team to earn a couple million when we lined up and used the Anheuser-Busch logo as our scrimmage formation," said Eagles safety Brian Dawkins. "Unfortunately, that logo is really elaborate, so we got flagged for having 40 men on the field."

Dawkins was hampered by penalties and flagged once for failing to dial 1-800-COLLECT.

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who completed 30 of 51 passes for 357 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, said he would have performed even better if it weren't for the wind and the difficulties he experienced throwing the two-liter Pepsi bottle, the oversized Viagra tablet, and the 13 other objects that served as balls during the game.

"This is great for the league, but I'm not sure it's the best thing in the world for the players," McNabb said. "The anxiety made me throw to [wide receiver Todd] Pinkston a half-second before he turned and looked back for the ball—I mean, looked for the can of Campbell's new Chunky Chili. If I hadn't felt so much pressure to please the advertisers, I wouldn't have hit him in the forehead with that pass. I also believe that, if he'd been wearing a traditional helmet instead of a KFC bucket, he wouldn't be in the hospital right now."

Above: Dawkins (left) and Eagles defensive lineman Corey Simon praised the "smooth handling" of the Lincoln Mark LT they used to chase down Dillon in the second quarter.
The play in question earned McNabb and Pinkston $65,000 each.

Patriots running back Corey Dillon said it took some time to adjust to the new game rules.

"You expect to get hit, and you expect the game to be played hard," Dillon said. "But you don't expect the quarterback to call a lead-toss right off-tackle play and then hand off a damn 50-pound Kyocera Mita combination copier/printer/fax machine."

In spite of the unusual circumstances, Dillon went free with a 45-yard run, breaking four tackles and making clean, crisp prints all the while, in an open-field romp that office-machine manufacturers are calling the play of the century.

"One thing's certain," Dillon said. "Kyocera office products go the distance."

Patriots wideout Deion Branch, Super Bowl XXXIX's Most Valuable Player, was instrumental to the Patriots victory, catching The Pepsi Spirit, The Great New Feeling Of The Great City Of Jacksonville, and 11 passes for 133 yards.

NFL marketing chief Phil Guarascio admitted that on-field product-placement is in its early stages.

"The league is sensitive to complaints from fans who say advertising should not affect play," Guarascio said. "That's why we've urged Kyocera to develop lighter copiers."

"And we're still hearing things, good and bad, from the professional-sports community," Guarascio continued. "The NFL Player's Association has made several good points about a few ill-considered product placements that may have led to player injuries. Nonetheless, we think product placement will make the NFL a more exciting and profitable venture for players and marketers alike."

According to doctors, Patriots linebacker Teddy Bruschi is still listed in critical condition after recovering a fumble in the Kingsford Charcoal Red Hot End Zone.

Being a graduate of a Big Ten school, I can honestly say the whole Michigan vs. Ohio State football thing is completely insane. I saw that billboard outside of Columbus with the "Muck Fichigan" about ten years ago.

A buddy of mine that is a huge Michigan football fan and his favorite t-shirt of all time is his "MIKE TOMCZAK SUCKS" shirt. Every year he would get his heart broken as Michigan would have a chance to win a National Title and yet somehow lose to Ohio St and screw it up, which is ironic as usually when Ohio St. has a chance to win it all they lose to Michigan. Michigan having to share their title killed him, almost as bad as Ohio State winning one.

Michigan coming to Bloomington to play Indiana is a bigger bar day than homecoming and only behind Little 5 for the amount of booze sold in town. IU fans like the tailgating, but the game is pretty much optional except when they play Purdue, which has been a joke the past ten years as the Boilermakers have gotten pretty good.

I think the Colts will put the franchise tag on Edge and then try to deal him off to Miami. Rumor has it they are interested in Patrick Surtain. Losing James would hurt, but Dominick Rhodes his backup ran for a 1000 yards three years ago when Edge got hurt early in the season. Rhodes has pretty much only played when James was hurt, but has looked ok when he got the ball.

The Colt's defense has gotten better every year since Tony Dungy took over the team. This past year they were really good about getting sacks and causing turnovers. They were also the second youngest defense in the NFL and like four new starters. They have signed up a few of these players for a couple of seasons, so I think they could improve next season in to a top 10 defense.

If I was to pick a dark horse team I think will be tough next year, I would go with the Bengals. They didn't get as much hype as the Bills or Panthers for how well they played in the last part of the season, but they played nearly as well. If they can bring back Rudy Johnson, they will have a very high quality offense and are only a run stopper on the D-line away from being a very good all around team.

i heard chris mortenson on dan patrick today mention the bengals as a dark horse and thought 'ooh, good pick'. palmer was looking very sharp. i can't believe i forgot rhodes! i've picked him up off the waiver wire enough times in fantasy to know that guy's plenty capable. if i was the dolphins i'd go after shaun alexander over edge but either would do. i'm sure this is go nothing local media nonsense (then again i thought the same thing when the tim hudson to the braves rumors started) but has anyone heard anything about a randy moss to the falcons for peerless price and a first rounder?
