When it comes to getting value for money in the city that never saves, the odds are heavily stacked against you. I like fod, and I like eating out, but usually find the combination dissapointing. Post any good experiences (stating both the speciofic pub, specific dish and price (approximate) so we can navigate these trecherouse gastronomic waters.

I had the burger and chips (20p change from 7 quid) in the abbey in Kentish down, and was struck down by how qwonderfull it was. It wasthe cheepest thing on the menu but the loving care that went into shaping the generouse patties was a joy to behold. And yes I am aware of beer in the evening, I just dont think it is sually specific enough when it comes to such things.

the city that never saves

is that really what they call London these days?

i was never really a huge fan of pub food, but The Holloway (surprisingly on Holloway Road) does an excellent sunday roast for very cheap, possibly as low as £4.95.

this strikes me as rather a joke of a price just for burger and chips to be honest, regardless of how good it may taste. you may as well go to Wetherspoons.

stevem otm. honestly, in most pubs i find you pay about the same price (if not more) as you would in a restaurant.. most of which consistently do better food than a pub.

true say Ken, but what i am saying is that concidering that you pay so much it might as well be qualioty you are buting. And i must say that both the burger and chips were jaw droppingly good.

I would pay that much for chips deep fried in goose fat!

But not if I didn't have to! Must go to Farringdon.

What about http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/index.html for a food and drink guide eh?

I tend to take a packed lunch.

Because I am mental and wish to advertise the fact.

I usually like Harry Ramsden's, but the one at Picadilly Circus is bloody awful. I asked for Harry's Celebration Ale but got Harry's Normal Ale! The food wasn't hot enough! It took ages to arrive! The satff were moaning minnies! They feigned ignorance of my British Rail 2 for the price of 1 voucher!

I know you all know it's crap, I'm just hoping to warn some random googlers.

The Flask, Highgate £8.90, Butcher's platter: Exellent, big plate of cold roastbeef, ham, salami, pate, horse raddish, bread, chutney. Proper pub food if you ask me, a ittle pricey but very wel done. the have a fisherman's platter for the same price with a good amount of prawns, dublin bay prawns, smoked mackrel and the like.

the alma on newington green road generally has excellent food, and the social in little portland street does the best tuna melts i've had outside of my own kitchen.

The Ploughman's lunch at The Ship on Wardour Street was superb, about 9 months ago. About a fiver probably, I forget.

I had a nice Lamb Lunch at The Jolly Gardners at Putney the other day, it was pretty expensive though (with a coke it was like £10.50) and they gave me very little mint jelly

the sausages sandwiches at the bishops finger, opposite smithfields market, are not worth the price of admission.
