I first met Nickalicious not long after my boyfriend and I split up. I had just gotten over a serious illness that I won't bother to talk about, excpt that it was part of the miserable weary split up and my feeling that everything was dead. With the coming of Nickalicious began the part of my life you could call my life on the road. Before that I'd often dreamed of going West to see the country, always vaguely planning and never taking off. Nickalicious is the perfect guy for the road because he was actually born on the road, when his parents were passing through Salt Lake City in 1979, in a jalopy, on their way to Los Angeles. First reports of him came to me from Rumpy Pumpkin, who'd shown me a few letters from him written in a New Mexico reform school.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I was struttin with some barbecue, man, when some clyde started bustin on the ole bring-down one-two. I said to that unhip daddio "man, cool it, get straight from the fridge," but the square had none of it. So I took my real-gone kitty, made for a hop in the kemp and took off for the casbah, man.

It all began with the 'hep', who later became the 'hip', but took a strange side turn into 'hippies', and have lately settled into 'hipsters'. All these cats owe Cab Calloway - big time.

Now, as for me, I'm strictly from squaresville. I'm no teahead. I got no goatee. I don't dig Dizz. Don't wear no black turtlenecked tee. I don't wear sandals and I stay in my own tree.
