stupid question about swapping files between a mac and a pc

ok, i'd like to be able to tranfer files between two laptops, one of them a windows xp machine with a 802.11b/g wireless card, and the other a powerbook running panther. what's the easiest way to do this? i'm aware that this is a really dumb question, but can the two machines be made to talk directly without being in the presence of a router? i have a wireless router, too, if that's going to make things easier, and i guess direct use of an ethernet cable would be an option too.

Does the machine you want to transfer FROM have a CD or DVD burner & the other machine have a CD/DVD drive? You can always tranfer the files that way.

Otherwise, I know ethernet file sharing from an ethernet cable is easy if you going Mac--->PC (adjust your network settings to allow for PC sharing), but I'm not sure about the other way around.

On XP they have step by step instructions on how to do this. Click around on the Network settings area until you find it.

Personally I'd pull out the null modem cable muahahahaha.

I had lots of fun attempting this from my old 95 machine to my laptop.

could do it via cd/dvd burner, but it's going to be an ongoing swapping mp3s type thing, so it seems a bit of a waste of time/money to do that.

so does anyone know if just putting the two laptops side by side will work? i have a feeling someone once told me that you'd need some kind of router, although if an ethernet cable between the two will work, shouldn't the wifi option be similar?

i guess the thing to do is probably just to play around, by the sound of it.

I'd try doing it from the mac whether you're copying to it or from it, and make sure all the settings on both allow you to share (but you know that). I did it a couple of times and it was fine but it's not something I do regularly so I don't know what kinds of problems might crop up.
