had the first physical of my adult life on Monday.
my vitamin D level was EIGHT. normal is 65 or so. hello, Pacific Northwest!
I'm on 50,000 units a day for a few weeks, then they will test me to figure out what it normally is.

I am currently one day into my experiment with Rhodiola Rosea. The Ancient Greeks, The Vikings, The Ming Dynasty and The Red Army all loved this shit. I am currently feeling a bit caffeinated but long term users say you require constant daily doses to truly feel the benefits.

An interesting adaptogen that both induces Nrf2 regulated cellular stress responses and inhibits mTORC1-regulated anabolism/aging. The most interesting discoveries have been life extension in flies, worms and yeast, but to my knowledge there has yet to be followup in mammals. The following primary studies offer fairly useful reviews of the literature.
Liu Z et al 2012 Rhodiola rosea extracts and salidroside decrease the growth of bladder cancer cell lines via inhibition of the mTOR pathway and induction of autophagySchriner SE et al 2013. Extension of Drosophila lifespan by Rhodiola rosea through a mechanism independent from dietary restriction

I was about to go for Prozac recently, but went for a different path.

@xelab: no, I haven't tried Rhodiola. I mostly press those buttons with daily broccoli & coffee, low-dose Andrographis, Rosemary extract, and exercise, and weekly 1 day fasts. Its just one of a handful of herbals that bypassed my bullshit detector, and you can view the scientific literature I've collected on Rhodiola here.

Addendum: Once you delve into the literature, you'll find most "general health" herbs are simply hormetic toxins that appear increase cellular stress responses and inhibit inflammatory ones by a handful of pathways (Nrf2, AhR, PXR, NF-κB, etc). I've seen others in the longevity community that hit the same pathways with 15 different herbs, and at some point the actual toxicity overwhelms the stress response. Some have gone to the ER taking too much tea extract or broccoli juice, so I suggest moderation. In general, health is best served by a whole plant based diet, regular exercise, occasional fasting and not by treating any individual compounds or herbs as panaceas.

I have finally found a brand of Rhodiola Rosea that makes me realise why it was popular with the Red Army. I feel like I am speeding my tits off, but in a healthy sort of manner. The cynic in me says that it is probs adulterated with caffeine and ginseng, but no there is no comedown and the only side effect is I have very vivid dreams that go on forever when I sleep.

interesting article on the crap shoot nature of some herbal supplements... I remember the turmeric boom of a few years ago. I currently only take milk thistle on a regular basis (and occasionally valerian root for sleep)
But “there’s something like 100,000 herbal and dietary supplements out there”, says Fontana. “Most of them don’t cause harm that we know of … but none of these things are tested or validated or regulated,” he says. “I don’t see that the current administration is interested in more regulations, either.”

you just need to swing a little pendulum around the shelves of the new age store, it swings faster when it’s close to the herbs you need
