I'll be taking a botany course for the hell of it starting this week. Exciting, I know. Tell me your experiences please.

There was a great article in today's Guardian about a forensic botanist who provides police evidence by taking pollen samples etc from bodies. I was very impressed that she could tell someone had walked through an overgrown ditch 13 days previously by looking at the way the nettles were sprouting.

57 7th, I'm applying to do an OU short course in astrophysics (the extremely simple beginners version, obv) - it's exciting!

What's OU?

Two of my grandparents were botanists. It's fascinating stuff! Angiosperms and Gymnosperms and all that.

OU = Open University. £99 for a 10 week course, 8-10 hours work a week. Seems about right - my only worry is that it'll be a bit basic as it's an area I've read about with interest in the recent past.

Insist on taking field trips.

The world needs more botanists. Do not be put off by annoying blokism in your fellow students. Don't be put off if it seems there is a lot to learn, it will come together easily if you think about landscapes, communities, function and taxonomy (relationships)rather than "oh my god there are 1000000000 plants to memorize".

Don't be scared if field trips seem physically demanding, this is a lie, actually botanists walk very slowly and stop to look at everything. The people who rush around showing off their new gaiters are not botanists, they are wankers (see annoying blokism).

Botany is a v diverse field so if you are not into the community scale ecological side you can do heaps of interesting stuff about plant physiology and function and limits to growth/yeild (this has the advantage of being a respectable, money earning, biotechnology kind of science).

I was just thinking of alternation of generations plant life cycles on the bus yesterday. They are fucking crazy. Plants are just crazy. Even the ones that don't sing and eat people.

Botany is the class that made me think –– ppl w/an allergic reaction to pollen should explain by saying "sorry I have a lot of sperm in my nose right now." Or maybe not.
