New York Living for the Underage Drinker

Having spent 18 years of my life in the wonderfully post apocalyptic Detroit Rock City (and yes, I did just call it that), I've moved permanately to the NYC area. (The YMCA in Newark to be honest, but I go into the city most of the time. One burnt out industial monster city to another, huh? ((and am looking for an apartment in the area ASAP as a side note)))

Ive spent about a week figuring out the subway system, and can get around most places. Took some trips to the obvious places, Coney Island, SoHo, Time Square, Little Italy, China Town, Central Park -- but haven't spent a lot of time in any. I have all the time in the world, but can you guide me to the little niche places? The hidden treasures, if such exist? Ways to meet people? That's a desperate need.

I'm sure threads like this must exist (I tried looking and couldn't come up with many), but this is different as I can't really go to bars, and I'm sure that's what most of you are going to suggest first. Help a brother out.

GET ONE IAN

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Huh? How weird. When I lived in NY, my phone number was GET 1 BOB. I wonder what would happen if you rang GET 1 IAN.

Hi there! I'm underage in Nude York as well. Most bars won't card you (especially during the week), and plenty of bodegas won't either. Check out the Museum of Natural History if you haven't already, and the Museum of Modern Art (even though they just raised prices.)

Eat at Gray's Papaya (locations scattered about the city) if you like hot dogs. Mamoun's on Macdougal has the best, cheapest falafel. Just south of Washington Square West.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

korean delis everywhere will do that though

Dude my friend needs an apartment mate. It's in Bushwick/"East Williamsburg". Do you want me to forward the email?

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

There's a taxi stand called PUNJABI just above Houston between 1st and A where you can get great samosas and other treats for pennies.

There are plenty of all-ages shows at CBs and Continental that you can get into -- good place to meet potential pals.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Phil, you just made me laugh/snort.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I need to go to Punjabi Deli. Thanks for the recommendation.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

punjabi should be declared a national treasure at this point. also, there's the pakistani tea house around church & chambers way downtown. if you're in chinatown, don't forget the 5 for $1 dumplings at excellent dumpling house on eldridge or fried dumpling on allen st near delancey.

i'd say go to the mars bar on second ave & 2nd st for unique atmosphere, a no-nonsense jukebox, talkative patrons and cheap, dangerously strong drinks, but times have changed and they card a lot now.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Is fake ID really not an option...?

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

i could be wrong about this as i haven't tried to get one recently, but i don't think it is. at this point state ids and driving licenses are hologrammed/watermarked to an insane degree, so that a good fake is probably beyond the reach/wallet of a lot of kids. you can get cheap fake student ids, but they usually don't work. if a bar in nyc cares enough to card you, then they're going to scrutinize whatever you give them.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Despite New York sounding fabulous, this makes me very glad I grew up in Britain where a nice smile and a crappily doctored student id are more than enough. And this was for when I was in sixth form. University without legal drinking makes the mind boggle.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Don't eat at Mamoun's! I can never get a goddamn table there anymore...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I know! Imagine how productive the young dears must be!

Oh, I forgot the noize dudes.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

xypost: if you grew up in New York, you wouldn't have gotten carded much either. Guiliani cracked down on nightlife in the 90s, for real.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Weirdest crackdown moment for me: sitting in a restaurant, a restaurant that did NOT have a bar in it, just served wine and beer to eating patrons, while they were in the process of getting busted by a cop because he spotted a waiter pouring a glass of wine for someone who looked underage, so the cop came to the outdoor cafe area and carded the kid! Mind-boggling.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I went to Staten Island last night, just to see what was there. Nothing, apparantly.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Staten Island is all about the ferry ride.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought the same thing!

Would be even more awesome if the kid turned out to be Rick M0ran1s. I used to see him eating at this Chinese place in the East 50s every once in a while when I was working over in that neck of the woods.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

OTM except for the landfill filled with old mafia hits.
