What is the best open-air food market in New York?

I'm starting to realize that there's nowhere that really compares to Borough Mkt in London, which has incredible (and expensive) cheese, all ranges of meats, exotic beers, great produce, tomatoes, etc, huge tables spilling with bread. I know about Union Sq which is great for veggies but what about MEAT? What about CHEESE and BREAD? No markets for these things? I know that it's possible to go from place to place, but I'm looking for ONE-STOP SHOPPING here.

p.s. Has the Fulton Fish Mkt moved to Queens yet?

you can find meat and cheese and bread at Union Square greenmarket. i don't know if it's the same as Borough market, but I'm pretty sure it would be the closest. it's possible that outdoor markets here are more garden-oriented ("green"markets after all) than those across the pond.

Awesome, I don't remember the meat and cheese!

Yeah Borough Mkt had whole deer and rabbits hanging up around the holidays, it was awesome.

well, I don't want to misrepresent it - it's not like you can go pick out a particular steak cut, but there's at least one or two people who sell particular kinds of meat and game. there's also at least two or three cheese and bread people each.

:)

It's weird that there's not a big "market" with covered roof and things frying up to eat and people playing music for money and super high-end cheese and stuff. It would be a big attraction! The Union Square market IS good, from what I remember, and apparently in ways I don't remember too, but it feels kind of stuck in to the side a bit. There's a not this great anticipation of arrival.

maybe it is weird. i think we're so much a food (and fast food) culture that the need for such a market is obviated (and the tourists don't come to NY for real-life-type things). so the market that does exist is for restaurant and home chefs.

that said, I think USQ greenmarket has expanded in the last few years. the Southern part of the market is new, yes? there are tchotchke stalls that include a soup place that people talk about (but i thought was terrible the one time i tried it).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

we don't have a Portobello market either, do we?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

I mean, walk five blocks from USQ and you hit Dean & DeLuca, Garden of Eden, City Bakery, 'wichCraft, the organic market on Univ Pl, and probably a couple of places that don't come immediately to mind. There's no need.

Chelsea Market anyone?

Why, I'd love to!

xpost to gabbneb: THIRD AVENUE CHEESE SHOP (@10th street, I think?)

gabby: you are wildly underestimating my need for a big busy market with lots of good smells

i just remembered the tiny pathetic little market at Grand Army Plaza.. they tried to make it work god bless em. two things i remember from there: the people who made apple cider and apple doughnuts; the people who sold both lamb and sweaters.

there's at least one amazing cheese/bread stall at union square, on the west side kind of across from heartland brewery and republic.
