It's nice that PT Anderson could make a decent movie out of Punch-Drunk Love, but I still say that Adam Sandler should not be a famous person. He's just a goddamn goof.

Sandler’s typical bratty humor rectifies the frat-boy mentality his fans might expect. Sandler and James skillfully liberate macho rigidity by spoofing gay and straight males’ skittishness. Chuck & Larry has more laughs per minute than any movie since Hot Fuzz.

The first 40 minutes of The Cobbler are obnoxious, bigoted, and unfunny; and then it gets worse, as the second 40 minutes are an inscrutable heist movie with an overweening desire to Say Something despite being completely deranged, and absurdly amoral for something nominally about doing the right thing, all while hinging its plot on the idea that every man in New York has the same shoe size. And then it gets worse. The movie plunges down and down, until it ends at its very worst moment. If there was anything in the whole 99 minute farrago to suggest that Tom McCarthy knew what humor was, I would insistently grab onto it as a parody of contemporary popcorn movies, but everything about the staging wants it to be sweet and tender and true.
― entry-level umami (mild bleu cheese vibes) (s.clover), Sunday, 17 May 2015 03:19 (ten years ago)
Of course, I fully expect that some people reading this will immediately hunt the film down, and I wish to publicly and earnestly disavow any responsibility for their choices. To lead people to The Cobbler would be nothing short of a crime. Not as big a crime as having made the film in the first place, but a crime nonetheless.

When the humans defeat the aliens once and for all (spoiler alert), the pixelated Paperboy, Frogger and other attackers wreaking havoc on the streets of Washington, DC, start disappearing. Even the buxom blonde -- the one Ludlow has a multi-decade crush on; who inexplicably turns from pixel to flesh mid-battle and starts fighting alongside the humans -- fades away.A tearful Ludlow asks why Q-bert gets to stay and not Lady Lisa. "Q-bert is a trophy," van Patten says. "We get to keep trophies." That's when the little orange alien turns itself into the platinum-coiffed object of Ludlow's affection. His dream girl is now a trophy he owns forever. Seriously. The epilogue is a shot of a crib full of little Q-berts. I couldn't make this shit up if I tried.

Whoa, according to IMDB, Iwatani actually does appear in the flick:
Although Denis Akiyama plays a fictionalized version of Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, the real Iwatani also appears in the film. Iwatani did not play himself because he doesn't speak English.

So on Halloween, a few of my daughters close friends' families got together for a backyard movie night after trick or treating. The kids weren't all that interested in watching a movie though, so someone got the idea to put something on for the grown-ups: the new Adam Sandler movie, Hubie Halloween. I haven't seen a Sandler film (other than the Hotel Transylvania series) since The Waterboy. I didn't actively watch any of it, but Sandler's voice throughout was enough to tell me that this wasn't for me. Worst thing was that I was having a decent conversation with another parent who I really like, but whenever anyone new arrived to the party, would break away to ask them if they'd seen it yet and tell them how many funny cameos there are.

ok I randomly caught You Don't Mess With the Zohan the other night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. All I ever heard was how fucking stupid and terrible this movie was but I didn't realize it revels in it in such an over-the-top way. I get Zoolander vibes from it, as opposed to the rest of Sandler's bad films, which give me a Zoolander 2 vibe

I watched part of a couple of them with the kids. We tried Wedding Singer first and wound up turning it off. I found it painfully unfunny and uncharming. Drew Barrymore is immediately in love with him for no apparent reason, no buildup, and it's supposed to be cute that he uses her to make some kid feel better about himself and encourages ass grabbing. The Boy George joke is not only transphobia played for laps (unfortunately common in comedies until pretty recently) but just isn't even funny on its own terms and is nonetheless dragged out and repeated to exhaustion. The kids didn't really get any of the humor.
Billy Madison landed a little better because it's just so entirely absurd and without any pretense of plausibility that it gets away with a lot more. Still some pretty cringey moments and his character is just so totally unlikeable that it was hard to watch.

*for laughs
Thought this would be about Spaceman, which is kind of dumb but we enjoyed it anyway. It has some nice '70s retro-futurist spaceship design and is kinda trying to be Solaris Jr, with a cute space spider whose only purpose is to be Adam Sandler's therapist.
