Chantico Drinking Chocolate: Dud or What?

Some Starbucks guy gave me a free sample of this. Bleaachhh! It tastes like a warm chocolate milkshake! Also, CNN actually did a brief business news item on the fact that Starbucks was coming out with this crap, and it seemed like quite a blatant news-vertisement.

You were expecting quality from Starbucks?

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Poster = alright I guess
Product = who cares? I can get some kick-ass hot chocolate at my local coffee place whenever I want.

I know, it's a pretty banal thread idea. Sometimes maybe I should think harder before posting these things.

I don't think their coffee is so bad. It's not my favorite, but if there's no good local place I'll drink it. They keep their coffee very fresh, unlike a lot of places.

"sometimes"

American Apparel and Jeanne-Claude (deangulberry), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I swear by their coffee. I refuse to try their 'drinks'.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely better than Dunkin Donuts.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

i am pretty unimpressed by this "drinking chocolate" business. i don't get it.

Ah, see I live in a city where excellent coffee is abundant. Starbucks is utter shite by comparison.

At Starbucks my wife ordered a strong skinny latté. The guy looked at her like she was an alien.

Is your wife from the planet Venus?

That's because the Starbucks kids are trained only in the lingo of Starbucks. I know, I was one years ago. Had your wife said "Doppio Non-Fat Tall Latte", she would have been fine.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

well, the sizes are in Starbuckese, but otherwise it's, y'know, Italian. excuse them for being an espresso bar and not a diner.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I refuse, however, to drink anything called "chantico" or "frappucino"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

and, oh yeah, the sizes other than mine (tall) are italian too

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

The Starbucks in north Jersey used to have really fucking good scones, but they appear to have changed bakeries.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

i suppose Torrefazione should rename itself the Toastee Diner?

(xpost - yeah, their baked goods - which weren't part of the original idea - have gotten progressively worse)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I bet they pronounce chantico wrong too.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Just the "drinking chocolate" part is bad enough.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

It tastes like chocolate mud. Avoid it at all costs.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that they only sell it in the 6oz size. That worries me. It must have so much fat sugar and cholesterol in it that it would be irresponsible to sell it any larger.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

i tried two samples of this, both times it was entirely too rich and sweet to drink all of a tiny sample cup, I don't know how anyone could down a full cup of the stuff.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I only drink espresso (lactose intolerance) and theirs is acceptable but nowhere near as good as Illy or Segafredo. Thier other prodcuts do not tempt me.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

i like their sickening gingerbread lattes. in fact I am desperately addicted to them. i hope the holiday season is over soon and they discontinue them so I can stop. the the main reason I go there now is because they're nice to me and don't charge me half the time.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Trust me, you would not want anything bigger than a 6oz cup of this - I got through about 2 oz and I couldn't handle anymore. It's akin to making chocolate milk yourself and dumping half a cup of powder in, mixing it with a couple tablespoons of milk to just liquid consistency, and instead of adding more milk, drinking it then.

It's not good.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

I get some kind of strange pleasure from watching hyped products completely flop -- I really hope this one does.

Illy espresso is the bomb.

As far as straight up regular coffee, there are a lot of places in NYC that are better, but assuming you're not that lucky, Seattle's Best and Seattle Coffee Roasters are usually better than Starbucks, but it depends on the franchise (Starbucks, on the other hand, is extremely consistent). I had some

As far as coffee for the home, there are about a million better options. Chock Full of Nuts is often less than 3 dollars a can. Mellita is damn good for less than 5. Zabar's makes the best damn coffee you can get for about $7 a pound (2-5 cheaper than Starbucks)
