Breakthru 3 Yr Bashwhen: Sat 1.15 (9pm-4am) where: Club Six (60 6th St, 415.863.1221) price: $10 / Free before 10pm links: Event Info
The evolution of the breakbeat — the percussive interludes that old school funk drummers used to separate parts of a song — is one of the stranger tales in 20th century music. Disco and hip-hop DJs were the first to isolate the break to create tension, paving the way for hardcore, drum 'n bass, and now breaks — which borrows from techno, jungle, and electro to create spine-rattling thrills that no stickman could produce on his own. Tonight, Breakthru, one of San Francisco's premier breaks crews, celebrates its three-year anniversary, with a lineup featuring Felix the Dog, Adam Ohana, and more, plus hip-hop and dancehall upstairs. It's make and break time. (PS)

The corner of Turk & Eddy in the 'Loin is "Pill Corner" but I think they have a little heavier-duty shit than your fun-time pills. Be very careful, though... Lot of riff-raff also sell shit where Haight ends at Golden Gate Park.
― andy-, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)
hi friends. what's good to eat in san francisco besides golden gate bakery these days?

giving JtM the silent treatment - this is how brutal SF is now
― El Tomboto, Monday, 20 February 2017 04:40 (nine years ago)
my two fave places are Swan's and Tadich, some might say "boring olde school", but to me it's comfort and perfect execution. B patisserie >>> tartine imho.

this is one of those weird weeks where there are more shows I am "interested" in going to in San Francisco than in Oakland. Rarely the case anymore, except for 80s reunion shows (like the Adam Ant show I missed last week).
― sarahell, Monday, 20 February 2017 08:29 (nine years ago)
Just finally went to Brandy Ho for the first time on Friday -- quite good.

Going to be in Sunnyvale for a few days for work next week and I have one night to meet a friend who lives in SF for dinner, any restaurant recs?
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 23 August 2024 14:15 (one year ago)
If getting to the Sunset is an option, then:
- Marnee Thai- Rose Indian- New Eritrea Restaurant and Bar- Pineapple King (this is a dessert shop -- I've never been there myself but people go nuts for it, and I see a line for it every time I walk by)
Mission:
- Little Star Pizza (deep dish)
― Joanna Neu!some (Leee), Friday, 23 August 2024 16:44 (one year ago)
How much you feel like spending? My fav is probably Nari (insanely good / creative / luxury Thai for $$$.) If you feel like pizza, I love Tony's Pizza Napoletana in North Beach.
― default damager (lukas), Friday, 23 August 2024 16:50 (one year ago)
Thanks! Charging it to the company so I don't want to go too crazy, lol.

Is the vaguely argentinian steakhouse on Mission around 22nd st still there? Tapas that is really good. I forget the real name … that was me & Geeta’s name for it.
― sarahell, Friday, 23 August 2024 17:56 (one year ago)
Lers Ros is good Thai in the Mission if you don't want to go crazy.
― default damager (lukas), Friday, 23 August 2024 17:58 (one year ago)
sarahell, was it Lolinda? https://www.yelp.com/biz/lolinda-san-francisco?osq=Argentinian+Steak+House

I mean Lolinda IS good.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2024 20:53 (one year ago)
I like Red's Java House on Pier 30/32 but that's more of an afternoon thing
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 20:58 (one year ago)
Also Sam's on Broadway @ Columbus... but seems like you guys have fancier tastes than me
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 21:01 (one year ago)
xpost - my wife still cites the Bloody Mary at Red's Java House as the best one she's ever had in her life
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 23 August 2024 21:33 (one year ago)
I heard Anthony Bourdain interviewed on KQED years ago, and a caller asked his top three SF restaurants... without hesitation, he said: House of Prime Rib, Swan's Oyster Depot, and Red's Java House
No Asian or Mexican spots! which is kinda weird.. but I guess he thought these were the *most* San Francisco institutions
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 21:42 (one year ago)
NOPA is always a classic, nice, not overly expensive, good value for money with portions.
Original Joes in North Beach is a solid place with a more old school vibe.
House of Prime Rib is timeless (but quite hard to get into if you don't reserve weeks in advance)
I'll 2nd Nari - that place is amazing, but a touch pricey. Similar experience with Indian food can be had at Copra (and it's cheaper than Nari).
New spot on the medium price tier with easy parking is Dalida out in the Presidio. Place is one of the best new joints in the entire city, not overly expensive (for SF) and a really cool east Mediterranean wine list.
Most of these places are around $80-120 a person depending on how many drinks you order. Be aware of "service charges" and fees added on to your bill. Check out this site for guidance: https://www.seefees.ca/
If you just need a MEAL and aren't entertaining a client or what not and need to stay under say a $50 per diem, highly recommend some solid sit down Mexican at San Jalisco in the Mission or one of the many amazing Chinese restaurants in the city. For pizza, seek out Pizza Hacker in Bernal Heights.
― octobeard, Friday, 23 August 2024 21:47 (one year ago)
My first bunch of recommendations are much more budget-friendly and top out at around $20 a person.
― Joanna Neu!some (Leee), Friday, 23 August 2024 21:57 (one year ago)
Maybe this is a foolish question but uh is there anything good midway between SF and Palo Alto/Sunnyvale?
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 23 August 2024 22:06 (one year ago)
Most of those places are definitely > $20 a person in the city now with tax + tip/service fees. True < $20 meals in SF are rare now, especially if you plan on having a beverage with it.
― octobeard, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:06 (one year ago)
xp to Leee
SF is like one of the most expensive places to eat out on the damn planet for reals.
― octobeard, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:07 (one year ago)
Like, an El Farolito super burrito, with chips and a tamarindo is < $20. Swap the agua fresca to a cerveza and you're over $20.
― octobeard, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:09 (one year ago)
For pizza, seek out Pizza Hacker in Bernal Heights.
Which I can second. And I'm right nearby. Not that you were asking. But you know. (If you did end up there, might as well go either to Mitchell's afterward for ice cream or the Royal Cuckoo for drinks, or both.)
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:13 (one year ago)
Hayes Valley has become kind of fun. Suppenküche is one of my favorite hangouts there. There's a Ritual, a Gioia, bunch of dessert places and bars. Super pedestrian friendly.
― beard papa, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:18 (one year ago)
I think these days you might find some really good restaurants down that way, especially Indian/Asian/Mexican... I just don't go down there much
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:29 (one year ago)
(Redwood City doesn't have many good restaurants, I can attest to that)
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:30 (one year ago)
Royal Feast in Millbrae is awesome Sichuan
― brimstead, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:35 (one year ago)
isn’t Tony’s the place to go for SF pizza or is that all hype?
― brimstead, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:36 (one year ago)
tony's was great when I went there in the '10s but it's been a while since i've been there
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 23 August 2024 22:37 (one year ago)
I haven’t thought about Suppenküche in ages. I went there in the early 90s I think, when it first opened. I remember communal dining at long tables, with beer mugs and a lot of people wearing cable-knit sweaters
The chile relleno super burrito at El Farolito (North Beach) is great! It’s not a sit-down place though
Original Joe’s on Washington Square Park is one of my favorite-ever restaurants, and all of my family and friends like it too. It’s mid-priced, the service is great, and it feels very old-school SF. They’ve opened a new restaurant on Chestnut Street in the Marina called Little Original Joe’s which I haven't been to. I remember loving the diner the family had in the Tenderloin in the 80s, just called Little Joe’s
I’ve been enjoying pizzas from the new Flour + Water Pizza Shop on Columbus at Union (the site of the old Rose Pistola), around the corner from Tony’s Napoletana. It has a really nice large space to sit down and eat a meal
I keep reading in the Chronicle about great new restaurants in San Mateo (the town), I think on B Street? I'm not sure, but that is about mid-way between Palo Alto and SF. I used to work in Redwood City (the San Mateo County seat). It has some fancy new restaurants too, but I haven’t been to them
― Dan S, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:47 (one year ago)
Still always a line out front
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:49 (one year ago)
Redwood City restaurants are always like "Salt & Iron," "Iron & Oak", "Oak & Salt" etc... dull gastropubs
There is a really good German restaurant/beer hall in downtown Redwood City, right by the train station - Gourmet Haus Staudt, aka Gourmet House
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:52 (one year ago)
Suppenküche is awesome and a great option in Hayes Valley! One of the first places I went to regularly when I moved here 20 years ago.
Ned you got solid taste - Royal Cuckoo and Mitchel's are the best. I deeply miss Iron & Gold though (no, it's not in Redwood City) which was across the street from the Cuckoo on Mission. It's a nail salon now.
― octobeard, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:57 (one year ago)
+1 for Royal Cuckoo
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:57 (one year ago)
For German/beer hall, I used to swear by Schroeder's in the Financial District, but something happened and they raised their prices by about 1700% so I can't vouch for it anymore
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 23:00 (one year ago)
Iron and Gold may not be around but Cellarmaker is just down the street and you've got both good beer and pizza, so.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2024 23:15 (one year ago)
disappointed to hear that Iron and Gold shut, but another +1 for the CuckooIf you like Ethiopian food, Club Waziema on Divisadero was always a favorite of mine. Owner / barkeep is super rad
― sknybrg, Friday, 23 August 2024 23:55 (one year ago)
The Cuckoo looks like the Green Mill of SF, huh
― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Saturday, 24 August 2024 00:13 (one year ago)
I always get takeout and it's usually just an entree, which is usually under $20 for me. But I'm also a cheap skate! And yes, prices are pretty high relative to other places.
There's a great taqueria is South San Francisco called Melissa's, their wet burrito is amazing, albeit huge.
I think there are a couple well regarded Burmese places, like in Millbrae or San Carlos.
