right now i'm just feeling mellow as a cats tail folks.

i dont drink it cuz i dont drink cuz thats wrong but if i did im sure id like it. one thing i have heard is that some kinds are good and some are bad. and that it is only good when v cold. of course its 65 d here and it would still have been good if i'd drank some but i didn't. so what are the good kinds and what are the bad. what are you favorites. what are you least favorites.

Put bad vodka through a Brita filter and be rewarded with GOOD vodka.

I don't drink liquor unless it is brown.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

ive heard the same thing about the vodka/brita thing. i ought to try it, but i too usually just drink whiskey. but i have a giant bottle of smirnoff that ive been meaning to get rid of (consume)

I don't really like vodka, but I don't mind Skyy and Grey Goose.

put enough bad vodka in your mouth and you've got good vodka

(the brita thing is interesting, although I don't have one of those filter things)

I always thought that Smirnoff was Swedish. Are you thinking of Stolichnaya?

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

smirnof is russian, but there were two brothers, i think one of em split off and eventually ended up as the Diageo-or-who-the-fuck-owns-Smirnoff brand, but you can still buy what is i think prob. more "real" Smirnoff vodka in russia, i recently cracked open my bottle i bought back 3 yrs ago, it tasted pretty damn good.

heres a photo of the logo, cant find one of a bottle though, they look pretty.

Vodka is supposed to be more or less tastless, so paying too much for a bottle is ridiculous.

Slump Man (Slump Man), Thursday, 13 January 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

cheap vodka ($5/litre) gave me a bad headache and i was puking like crazy the next day, whereas normally I can drink lots with no problems. I previously held the "if you mix it, theres no difference" attitude but that was changed forever.

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

also thanks for that link! im gonna try it as soon as I get my hands on a bottle. Lately I've been drinking beer exclusively thanks to the SAQ (quebec liquor stores) strike.

Who drinks vodka for the taste?? That's like using rubber butt plugs because the cork ones don't come in blue.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

there are some 'sipping' vodkas that are nice and smooth like zyr or luksokova or however you spell it. i like ciroc too. but yeah, i guess they're nice because they taste like nothing

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

I was at a Russian restaurant year ago and ordered some allegedly high-end vodka to go with a selection of appetizers. It smelled and tasted like rubbing alcohol.

ideally, i'd have belvedere martinis all of the time. i'll happily settle for ketel one and soda, and i'm not too bothered by stoli. absolut, on the other hand... VILE. it's one of the best examples of the power of advertising.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Does that really work with the britta filter? I might try that! Anything to make Tsar brand generic vodka more drinkable.

I love vodka. But I'm not a vodka snob. I'll drink anything if it's mixed with enough coke to make it brown.

i feel seriously fucked up today/yesterday and itain't just caffeine. because thtat was like 12-14 hours ago. i just drank 1/4 stolen jim bean (polished off) plus a few swigs of GOOD vodka (aftger drinking an iced glass of shit vodka). and well yeah i'm feeling a slight buzz i guess but basically giong out of my mind otherwise.

hmm. it's like...vodka and red bull type shit. cept i ain't had no red bull. i was giong haywire earlier...pacing all around the house upstaris downstairs computer book can't comprehend much repeat. only 10 pages of gravity's rainbow read today. but that's all i remember doing besides posting on here, reading gravity's rainbow. and i had experienced a similar ("manic"?) episode about 1-2 weeks earlier, lasting for about a week, then it stopped. but it didn't end with MASSIVE DEPRESSION (like it's supposed to right?) but rather...mellowness type stuff. so it can't be bipolar disorder right?

I don't know why you irritate the shit out me, John, but you do. I realize this is my problem, not yours. I'll try to quit bugging you.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

i drank 2 much sodie pop thats all. i was lieing abt the other stuff.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I drank too much of that Vladimir stuff one night, cos that was like all they had at this house party, which I refer to as the worst house party I ever attended, I don't think I've ever been at a party thrown by a more anal rententive, high maintenance person in my entire life, she spent more time screaming at her guests for various "infractions" (ie from what I can tell pretty tame and regular party behavior, like sitting outside smoking and playing cards for example). I ended up projectile vomiting all over bitch's balcony, though I don't remember doing it. Someone else did too, apparently. We should've brought the Brita filters! Bad party turns good!

I am pretty partial to Stoli but we did get Grey Goose for only $18 for a large bottle in Arizona so I switched to that, for a week.

Allyzay Needs Legs More (allyzay), Thursday, 13 January 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

When I had to go to substance abuse meetings, all of the alcoholics said that vodka was the substance of choice, because it doesn't taste nasty when you're vomiting it back up the next morning. I always wondered about that, because I binged on Jack and now I never want to drink it again. Why am I not surprised that jd is the one who started this thread. Dude, you need to go to a meeting or two.

Desperate crap-vodka mixers:

1. Lemon or lime juice,
2. Honey,
3. Chocolate syrup,
4. Olive or pickle juice,
5. Hot butter,
6. Coffee or tea.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, I have apple juice. Not the greatest, but it beats chocolate syrup (no offense libcrypt).

Z S, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Any sweet juice is an obv. choice for crap-vodka mixing and hardly falls into the desperate category.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

Warning: Mixing 2 or more ingredients on my list w/vodka may take it out of the "desperate" category.

Actually, lime + vodka rules, as does lime + just about anything edible.

i haven't seen any ads for it in britain, i just tried it one night in a bar. i like "smooth" vodkas, ones that don't particularly taste of anything but have a decent kick anyway. (i thought that was the idea of vodka?) so i'm not a fan of stolichnaya, lol.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

Chopin is the best one I've tried, but it's usually more expensive than I like for a vodka. On the lower priced front, Blue Ice is decent and frequently under $15/750ml.

The Gilded Palace of Hatcat (pixel farmer), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

Grey Goose gets a bad rep but it's preferable to Ciroc. I've always been broadly supportive of the move to regulate vodka as grain or potato-derived.

Belvedere and Chopin are superb and well worth the extra money, if you intend to drink them neat and straight from the freezer. I just use Finlandia, Absolut or Hortitsya for mixed drinks. Anything better's a waste of money.

I've always found that boiled potatoes with a little butter and dill work well in cleansing the palate when tasting vodkas. They're also good for stopping you getting too drunk too quickly.

I've been rotating b/t Ketel, Belvedere, and Chopin, depending on which is on sale at the store. I think I like Belvy the best, followed closely by Chopin, and just as closely by Ketel.

I'm thinking martini tonight. My own bastardization of the Vesper - 2 parts Sapphire, 2 parts whatever premium vodka I have around, and a half part Lilet. With a twist. Superb.
