Beautiful Boxer Anticipation

I saw Beautiful Boxer at a pre-screening last night. My first Thai film, as far as I know. Really interesting in a lot of ways. What have you heard about it? The director is sure to get some Hollywood action out of this, as will, I suspect...depending on his English, the lead actor.

That movie played for about a week here (Thailand) before disappearing. A lot of good Thai movies are made and some have won a lot of accolades overseas but never do that well here. Thais prefer ghost stories and silly comedies. Look out for Satree Lek (Iron ladies) and a recent one called Ma Nakorn (Citizen dog) by Wisit Sasanatieng. he also did the wonderful "tears of the black tiger" a sort of Western eastern.

I should have said an eastern western.

Interesting what you say about ghost stories and comedies. The director of Beautiful Boxer said last night that the cut he released in Thailand was basically a kickboxing film with comedy. The international version, for film festivals + US/European release, is a completely different film--according, again, to the director.

There have been some good movies here, but mostly, everyone goes to see the crap. I went to see a clever Thai movie (Citizen dog) in december and was the only one in the cinema but, had it been an awful comedy about cleaning ladies, (as has just been released and is bloody awful,) then the cinemas are packed. It is a cultural thing A common Thai criticism is "you are being too serious" or "you think too much." I was told last month that I am unhappy because I read too many books. Not taking things seriously makes the country an easy and welcoming place to live but it is sometimes infuriating.
