I just spent, like, 45 minutes trying to get into my parent's driveway.

Winter driving is the bane of my existence. It's the main reason why I get pissed off when people lucky enough to be born in snow-free areas of the world say stupid crap like: "I wish it would snow more" or "snow is so pretty". Go to hell.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

The more it snows in a place, the easier it is to drive in it. I'd rather be in Minneapolis under three feet of snow than Little Rock under three inches. Snowy places are more prepared, the drivers are a bit more experienced, and there's still bread at the grocery store.

That said, I'd just as soon not have snow, and at least I don't have to worry about rust-proofing the undercarriage.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Pleasant OTM. Californians who move to Boulder without fail every single year completely clog up traffic at the teensyest sign of ice with their "fender benders". i mean yeah, it's a pain in the ass to drive in the snow, but C'MON!

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 13 January 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I burned rubber (literally) trying to edge my wee li'l Honda up a hill leading into a Wendy's restaurant a little while ago. I swore a lot. Also, I think the crap-ass ice/snow combo has fucked w/ my muffler for the second time in a year. Fuck a season.

yeah fuck it. it gets you hurt.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

With the constant rain/freeze cycle going on now the roads are undrivable unless you want a flat tire or a broken axle. Bring back cobblestone you asphalt pouring bitches!

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Where's it blizzardin' right now? It's in the 60's here, but supposed to drop down into the 20's by the end of the day.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

God I hate it. My car broke down on the bridge (had to get towed) during this winter's first cold snap. I am, however, grateful for my new winter tires that have performed admirably when other cars were stuck in their overnight parking spots.

The worst is when it snows so hard that waiting at a red light causes your back window to be completely obstructed with an amazingly thick layer of snow.

Destroy: realizing you ran out of windshield fluid on the highway.

alex in montreal, Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

destroy: after some bumper-to-bumper white knuckle ice driving, spending the night in my car on the interstate/parkinglot outside of malvern, arkansas, and being totally unprepared and thinking i might just die and it's too cold to even doze off and by morning light the moisture from my breath forming a layer of ice on the inside of every window in my car.

search: stumbling home a few blocks in the snow completely drunk and happy and warming up in front of the gas heater.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Pleasant way OTM above. If there's one thing we know how to do here, it's remove snow. And if you drive on the toll road, they have their own dedicated crews!!

Next thread: Lawrence Kansas and I do POX: Cle-area potholes.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 13 January 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Fuck it. Also, I could really do without the layer of ice that's been forming on my windshield every morning. At least I've graduated to a scraper instead of using cd cases like last winter.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I've been dreading the coming of winter, since this is the first time I've owned a car in a climate where it snows (northern New Jersey). But so far, we've had hardly any snow.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 13 January 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I have a confession.

I secretly enjoy winter driving.

Excluding extremely shitty white-out or icy conditions - I think it's kinda fun. Like an adventure.

You can all proceed to call me all sorts horrible things now.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I do miss driving around in lots of snow. I was quite good at the ol' "pull-up-the-parking-brake-and-swerve-sideways-through-a-turn" trick that the Platte Countians taught me.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 13 January 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

What's really not great is when a few inches of snow fall and drivers only bother to wipe off the front windshield. And then they cut you off (and make people slam on their breaks and maybe slide off the road) 'cause they cannot see anything other than what is directly in front of them. "Motherfuck ALL of you... I am in more of a hurry and can't afford to burn the calories."

Hoarse Andy, Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

GET ONE SHOVEL!

Didn't really help! Becuase I had stupidly tried to make it after a plow run, a whole lot of thickly-packed, frozen snow ended up under my bumper.

C0L!N B--KETT, Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

I love it when they don't plow the sidewalks well around here.

I have to walk in the streets with the cars speeding by and swerving around me because the sidewalks ice up so badly that they are literally impossible to walk on (it doesn't help that Worcester is quite hilly and steep slopes up + ice = no).

LORD OF ALL THINGS HOMOELECTRONIC (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

What's really not great is when a few inches of snow fall and drivers only bother to wipe off the front windshield.

One of the funniest sites I ever saw .. on the way to work after a huge snowfall. Cars were backed up up about a mile and traffic was going about 5 mph. This woman had only cleared the front windshield, and the hood (what do you silly Brits call that? Bonnet?) had about 6 inches of snow on it. She had rolled down her window and was trying to clean off the hood with a cane while she crept along.

I know I should probably have felt sorry for her or something ... but I roffled instead.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

You should have pulled her out of the car and beat some sense into her.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

A couple years ago I had to drive to work on the Beltway while it was still snowing heavily (heavy snow is exceedingly uncommon in the DC area) in my toy-size Acura. I had allowed plenty of time, so I was making moderate, steady process. I suppose I shouldn't have ROFFLED so gleefully the several times I saw SUVs that had skidded off the road and into barriers or snowbanks.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 13 January 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Forgot to mention upthread:

DESTROY 1) SUV/4WD drivers who creep along at 10 mph or less when there's a slight dusting of snow on the road.
DESTROY 2) People who don't clear the snow off their roof and trunk and then merge onto the freeway right in front of you. When they hit about 50 mph, instant travelers' advisory.

J.Lu., I drove an Integra through eight Ohio winters with nary a problem. Great snow cars.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Friday, 14 January 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, going down the road, you actually have better control of your vehicle with front-wheel drive than SUVs equipped with 4WD - as long as you have (4) good snow tires. All wheel drive, which is not the same as 4WD, kicks ass.

Where I live, it's mostly back road driving with few other cars to be concerned with. I do find heavy snow at night can be somewhat of a bitch, though. You can't use high beams because all you see is SNOW coming at you. And of course on low beams you're lucky to see ten feet in front of you.

Icing conditions have to be the absolute worst though.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 14 January 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

I have been told by numerous people that

what the hell? It was supposed to say "...this was incredibly fun."

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 14 January 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I take it all back! There was this great combination of sleet and fog tonight and I got to drive around listening to the Casablanca Records Story and pretend I was in some 70s New York paranoia movie.
