Company Car Question

I've just got a new job and my employers have offered me the choice of a company car in return for losing £3k from my gross salary.

Is this a good deal (for a £10k car), or should I keep the cash and just buy one for myself?

Do they pay for repairs and gas and upkeep?

My last job, the 'car allowance' was 6K, which I took. But I have cheap cars so whatthehell.

Repairs - yes
Petrol - no

This is a tough decision...

Can you pimp your company's ride? Cuz if not, PASS.
Just kidding, sounds like a good deal, I'd take it, since (if you're going to be staying with the company for a long time) you'll probably get a new one every two or three years, vs. costs of maintaining/diminished resale value of buying/all that your own car.

for 3K, I'd say go for it.

When I got offered one, it was taxable depending on how much mileage you do. I don't do many miles, so it wasn't worth it for me. They offered me £8K, I think and I could run a car for less than half of that. I think it's now taxable on emissions, but mileage might come into it still. Find out!

Also it depends on the attraction of not really having to worry about any of the hassle about owning a car - tax, insurance, breaking down, theft etc etc. I must say that almost swung it for me - not having to give a shit about your car is kind of attractive. In the end I thought the extra records and beer money would come in handy.

yeah, ditto me, pretty much. But for 3K, I'd say go!

Buy a beat up car for 2 grand and spend the rest of the money on replacing eveything as it falls off.

say no thanks and charge them for your train/bus/whatever travel and the work that you can get done while travelling on the train/bus/whatever, instead.
