why don't they go after Amazon.com patrons? they don't pay ny state taxes either.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

One local smoker interviewed by the New York Daily News didn't take news of her $900 in due taxes well.
No shit!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Next up: suing non-smokers for lost revenue.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If the city doesn't back down on this, there really needs to be some random violence. Vandalism at the very least.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Or protests! Mass cigarette burnings!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha yes in NYC that will really show the mayor. HAHA FUCKER I SCRATCHED MY INITIALS INTO EVERY WINDOW ON EVERY SUBWAY CAR!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT!?

TOMBOT, Friday, 14 January 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking more of the "setting shit on fire" variety of vandalism. I guess there's a more specific word for that, though.

Bloomberg, Pataki and the 4 heads of the MTA need to be filmed getting tortured, assraped and murdered by someone.

Bloomberg, Pataki and the 4 heads of the MTA need to be filmed getting tortured, assraped and murdered by someone.

I don't think that's a type of vandalism.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it is. Ass vandalism.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Rage Against The Machine, Friday, 14 January 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

One of those "I'd like to see him enforce it" things...

ANYWAY as I said on the other thread A) yeah what about Amazon et al and the "lost revenues" there? B) it's not illegal (yet) to purchase alcohol online/mail order and you don't pay "back taxes" on that either, at what point is someone going to finally sue these dickshits on any kind of civil liberties grounds? It's a legal product and I'm pretty sure on the basis of the fact that A) selling cigarettes online is still A-OK in the other 49 states B) again the alcohol sale issue that these people do NOT owe the state backtaxes. This is fucking ludicrious, if it was any other administration I'd accuse the papers of making this up.

Allyzay Highlights The Fallacy of Radiohead (allyzay), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Next step: searching cars crossing the bridges and tunnels for contraband items purchased outside of NY, raping the city of TRILLIONS in sales tax each year. AND THEN BLOWING THE CARS UP.

Allyzay Highlights The Fallacy of Radiohead (allyzay), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I could see a lawsuit and a quick preliminary injunction against enforcement in the next few days or weeks...

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a civil liberties issue -- there's nothing wrong with charging sales taxes. Levvies are charged on legal products everyday, everywhere. And there's no movement afoot to halt the sale of cigarettes online, as far as I can tell. This is really a selective enforcement issue, and one that has been made into a grand drama by the tabloids (shockingly!). In two weeks when this political trial balloon fizzles nobody is even going to remember this aside from the poor slobs who got those letters.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My fair/not fair meter says selective enforcement issues are civil liberties issues, but I can see that argument getting me laughed out of the courthouse, too.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides, online companies already have all that worked out with the gov't ( http://www.forbes.com/2002/12/18/cz_jn_1218beltway.html ). Taxes on everything else are roughly similar throughout the states, but not even close on cigarettes. A carton for $9.99 is nowhere near the price you'd pay in NY and IndianReservationSmokes.com does not have this tax issue all worked out, like Amazon.com. I happen to be creating a government standardized tax system RIGHT NOW at work.
