Jennifer Coolidge (Stifler's Mom), RULES.
Listen for a totally brilliant use of "Walk, Don't Run" by the ventures.
Line of the film: "What's my name?? Say my name BITCH!!!"

The Lacrosse dude chucks the big game to be with his g/f and sing in the performance.
You realise they made three High School Musicals off this one plot device?

The first American Pie is surprisingly good. I rewatched it a while ago as a part of "Gender in Teen Movies" course at the university, and was surprised how balanced its views on sexuality and gender were, considering the genre. The ultimate lesson is that there more important things than sex, and that being a sexist macho gets you nowhere. Plus it is often quite funny.

Oswald Spengler? Wasn't he total elitist anyway?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)
idk, but he'd probably agree tha there are more important things than sex, and that being a sexist macho gets you nowhere.

Were you trying to say that banal popular culture shouldn't be studied at the university?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)
I see AP2 is up shortly...
On a percentage basis (that AP1 is 100%), how good is AP2?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)
of course not; it's obviously of crucial importance that the implications for gender politics of 'van wilder: party liaison' are explored to the full.
xpost

Do you think popular culture has no effect on gender? I'd say it's one of the strongest forces that affects it.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 10:48 (sixteen years ago)
keep up the good work then.
― groovy groovy jazzy funky pounce bounce dance (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)
the ultimate lesson is that there more important things than sex
this is exactly why the movie is total fucking bullshit btw
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:14 (sixteen years ago)
What do you mean? That sex is the most important thing there is?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)
being a sexist macho gets you nowhere
it gets you in bed with two lesbians according to the sequel
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:26 (sixteen years ago)
Can I has percentage?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)
88.135593%
(AP1 at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, AP2 at 52%. Lol geek.)

― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)
maybe not, but a message/moral like "sex isn't the most important thing in the world" smells like puritan bullshit to me
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:40 (sixteen years ago)
have you seen the film?
― groovy groovy jazzy funky pounce bounce dance (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:42 (sixteen years ago)
Well, the line is used reflectively, like "It's not the overriding thing, importance wise"
Which is somewhat hypocritical for this movie to tout as its message.
Particularly as the good guys get rewarded
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)
I watch it daily, right after vespers
― J0hn D., Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:01 (sixteen years ago)
i thought it sucked but otoh superbad is one of my all-time faves.
― groovy groovy jazzy funky pounce bounce dance (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:02 (sixteen years ago)
Have you actually seen the film? I think "sex is not the most important thing in the world" can have several implications, not necessarily just puritanism. The movie certainly isn't puritan in any way.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:39 (sixteen years ago)
Anyway, I think the more interesting thing in AP was the gentle deconstruction of traditional male stereotypes. "Sex isn't everything" was just part of that.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:41 (sixteen years ago)
The good guys get rewarded because they find ways beyond typical macho behaviour, whereas the characters who cling on to that (Stifler, the red-haired dude) are left with nothing. I think that's a pretty decent message for a movie aimed at teenagers.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)
But, this film was one of those with "Reward points" for the target audience:
"Consider the feelings of the girls, being treated as objects without reciprocal feelings. OK, well done, here's a bit of pie shagging. And now..."
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)
I don't see why a film shouldn't have both a serious message and bit of pie shagging. At least it wasn't too preachy.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, but it's very demarkated.
"There's something about Mary" was like that as well.
"Porky's" seemed more intertwined, from what I remember.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 12:54 (sixteen years ago)
Stifler and Sherman get "rewarded" in the sequel but i guess that's because they pay their dues via being humiliated enough beforehand altho that was supposed to be payback for being such jerks in the first place, so it doesn't quite add up. basically everybody wins.
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, there's "2" on ITV now.
Yep: Lots of references to 'last summer' and characters reintroducing themselves. And, not as good... still
― Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)
