while more than half the list is drawn from the coastal diaspora (Houston is third-coastal), once you get rid of the Mormon outlier, Iowa is clearly the most significant politesse cluster in the nation. of course, the Mormons passed through there.

Two of those cities are in Iowa. I suppose that politesse is clustered around Iowa, though.

Charleston is very well-mannered. The last place I actually bought a lemonade from a kid on the sidewalk in front of his house. (The house was a zillion-dollar manse on the Battery, but the kid was very polite for a rich boy. And the lemonade was only a dollar. Good, too.)

A dollar? Well, I can see how the kid got rich.

SAN DIEGO POLITE.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

(based on many a walk through downtown on a weekend night.. uh, no)

donut christ (donut), Saturday, 15 January 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

(granted, walking in downtown at night is usually not the way to find politeness..)

(but I did go to bagel shop in Kenzington one time and asked if they would recycle the glass bottle that contained Snapple I just purchased and consumed there, and I was met with an indignant "WE DON'T RECYCLE here")

(there are exceptions everywhere of course)

Oh snap, no Mpls/St. Paul. Minnesota Nice is a LIE!

Also: Charleston, according to Patton Oswalt.

philadelphia? the city of brotherly shove?

no, this person has no fucking clue.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 15 January 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

actually, perhaps the list-author's home is the epicenter of American politeness, given that it lies directly between Peoria and the Quad Cities. sorry.

Charleston -- South Carolina or West Virginia?

Either these guys are full of it or Slipknot is.

Philadelphia??? Michael Irvin to thread. . .granted that this is a slightly different context, but I remember seeing a poll of pro athletes where they were asked to identify the city with the 'worst
collection of fan rabble', and Phila won going away.
