ILX Direct Connect Hub

Crossposting from ILM:

I've just set up a Direct Connect Hub so that we may share files with one another. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this technology, direct connect is a system similar to Soulseek, except more specialised. Here's how it works:

* You download a generic Direct Connect client, like DC++ (for Windows users) or NeoModus (for OS X or Windows users).
* You up that client to share your files. (should be fairly self-explanatory) You need to share at least 500mb of stuff to connect to this Hub.
* You connect to the Direct Connect Hub located at 'ilx.p3r.net:6000' (that is, hostname 'ilx.p3r.net' on port 6000).
* You can search or browse through other user's shares, and download their stuff.

Yay.

No problem by me.

Is it just my wonky connection or is everything hella laggy?

It shouldn't be. What exactly is it that you're finding laggy? The connection process? Chat? File transfers?

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I'm using the built in OS X firewall and the above NeoModus client. If you are behind a NAT gateway (like a home router thingee or airport express), you should set the client to use "passive mode".

If you are running the OS X firewall thingee, make it allow ports 56067 and 56130; it can be found under Preferences, Sharing, Firewall.

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

well, that was kinda lame.

Problems. When I first launched the client, there were no icons in the Toolbar. Went to "Customize Toolbar" and dragged the default set, okay, no problem. According to the Welcome tab, I click "Connect" and then the "Public" button on the new window. I get a new window, but it doesn't have any buttons or icons. (Same as with the main toolbar when I launched the app.)

Mac OSX.3.2. Anybody have a suggestion?

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

worked fine on X.3.7

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I admit the 500 mb requirement is tripping me up simply because I really don't keep mp3s on my computer much!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

It's taking ages to hash all my files, but I'm there, baby!

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Updated system to X.3.7, no help. Now I'll ditch and reinstall the client with the OX updated and see if that helps.

I'm not missing a chatroom built into this thing am I?

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

So nobody can see my files?

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

I can only look at others' files when I'm in passive mode, and since you're in passive mode as well, I can't d/l anything from you, including your file list.

the chat room is automatic, just start typing.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm on this as Groke, currently just sharing the complete files for Popular (i.e. all #1 UK hit singles), but when I sort my europop and bubblegum folders out I'll put those on too. Seems to run very smoothly!

ok im going to get the new version of dc++ and see how it runs

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I can't connect to this. I'm trying to connect via my school's wireless network which I guess has a firewall / proxy (?). wd that mean I wd encounter problems?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i dont understand, cozen. you can't find the hub or what?

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, nath, like I load up dc+ and then I'm really confused as to how to point the program to ilx.wh3rd.net then I can't ever connect to the hub, can't find it, doesn't show up, whatever. I've not tried it w. other hubs (i.e. the dc+ shell comes with preset hubs it's pre-identified.) (I'm at home at the moment, i.e. not aberdeen, but I'll try these presets when I get back.) (don't hold out much hope neither though!) (s'a shame.)

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't show up, cozen, you have to put the link (or address, i don't know how you call it) in the bar underneath (i think) and then connect. it's a hidden hub so you won't see it in the public ones, i think. sorry, i think think think because i don't have dc connect on at the moment...

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I finally found some clear instructions for port-forwarding for my router. What port(s) do I need to open up for this thing, or am I supposed to just pick a number and stick with it both for firewall-opening and port-forwarding?
