"Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results.

Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity."

The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism.

On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation.

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch."

CLASSIC bait and switch.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

I imagine him doing that thing where you shake your hand and click your fingers whilst saying "classic".

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organisation is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids."

Yes, brainwashing kids to have tolerance .. those EVIL fuckers.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Has any reporter ever actually asked George Bush, West Wing-style, whether he considers homosexuality a appropriate/permissable/acceptable thing, and if so, why he hangs around with fuckers like FOTF?

Did anybody see Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin in India recently? Joginder Singh Vedanti, the Sikh equivalent to the Pope, declaimed Gay Marriage (which Canada is in the process of Parliamentally legalizing--the Supreme Court has already said it would be unconstitutional not to). Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was later quoted to the effect that Gay Marriage is "a sick idea from a sick mind."
Or was he?
Perhaps, he was simply misunderstood. Maybe he was trying to take credit for the tolerant and progressive stance, calling Gay Marriage "a Sikh idea from a Sikh mind."

I'm sorry.

I wonder what they think about the gay robots from Star Wars

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Gay robots are okay, I think, because they don't serve a biological function like the womenfolk do.

Huk-L, Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Also, we don't want robots procreating. Aw HELL no.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Do robots even have enough self-awareness to be gay?

Huk-L, Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

So 2005's going to be the kind of year where news stories somehow entangle James Dobson, Spongebob and Nile Rodgers? Classic.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

You know, the only evidence these guys have of Spongebob's ass-play fixation is that he occasionally holds hands with Patrick. Yep.

If things keep heading this way, we'll finally pass that "no touching other people" law and be one step closer to the right wing "everybody lives in a glass speres and eats through tubes installed in our navals and watch episodes of Davey and Goliath."

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Don’t go spreading this around or anything but I have it on very good authority (seriously) that the show’s main gay character (in a writers-amusing-themselves kind of way) is not Spongebob at all but rather the uptight Squidward, who when it comes down to it is sort of what you’d get if you put Will from Will and Grace in Bikini Bottom and he got kinda depressed about it.

seriously, though (nabisco), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

"Uptight gay squid" = comedy gold, too.

seriously, though (nabisco), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Squidward also has a lot of Jack Benny qualities.

Huk-L, Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

conservatives in not getting it/fun hating non-shocker.

I dont get Dobsons point. Are kids not butch enough for him these days?

I love that unbalanced people like "Doctor" Dobson are still allowed to roam the streets.

This plus Jerry Falwell's vendetta against Tinky-Winky makes me wonder if the Christian Right is some kind of monstrous satirical performance art piece.

Funded by the NEA, prob'ly.

Huk-L, Friday, 21 January 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Nile and I are going to purchase an anvil from ACME and find Dobson's house. I will climb a tree outside of the house and find a way to get the anvil up there, while Nile remains parked in a steamroller a few doors down. Dobson will surface for work the next morning, and I will release the anvil while above him. If the anvil misses, Nile will run over Dobson and flatten him like pancake.

This thread has convinced me that ALL cartoons promote homesexuality.

(homesexuality? Maybe that's what Dobson promotes.)
