Clerks: C or D?

(I can't believe there hasn't been a thread dedicated to this yet.)

I really enjoyed Clerks the first time I saw it. I was around 15 years old and stoned at a friends house. Around that time I also thought that Mallrats was some of the funniest shit ever, so I guess I was pretty much Kevin Smith's target demographic.

Having seen Clerks more recently, I found it frustrating. The characters are so two-dimensional, the dialogue is just annoying. Sure, there are people who do talk like this, and in some superficial ways the characters were well drawn, but who cares? I don't want to watch a couple of losers fuck around all day. My life is boring enough as it is.

That said, the film contains probably the only funny Jay & Silent Bob material (the highest point being the russian bezerker guy), as well as the oft-quoted '37 dicks' sequence.

I'll probably change my mind about this again, just give me a few minutes.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

annoying! i don't get why people think this crap is good!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

a great many things are funnier when you're a teenager.

still classic, though, if only because Dante wears a Penguin sweater for his game...

and yet huge dud for launching such a mediocre career.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I thought Clerks was just irritating. Dialogue like that might possibly make me laugh if it just came off the top of someone's head in real life, but not in a film.

Pangolino again, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Smith=One Trick Pony

That said, I think this is also true:The newer the Smith film, the worser it is (i.e. Clerks>Mallrats>Chasing Amy>Dogma>Jay & Silent Bob...>Jersey Girl)

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Hrmm I don't think it's that simple. I'd rank them:

Clerks>Mallrats>Chasing Amy>Jay & Silent Bob>Dogma>anything>Jersey Girl

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty much with Andrew, though I never saw Jay & Silent Bob. I saw Jersey Girl on a horrible bus ride in the torrential rain. The other movie we saw was The Ladykillers. Awful ride that was. And yes, they were MUCH funnier when I was about 13.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

i hated clerks when it first came out but its good, i like it now.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

see, I never understood all the Dogma hate. While I'll agree that it's seriously flawed and not all that insightful, there are enough funny gags to get me through.
So somethin' like Clerks> Mallrats> Dogma> Chasing Amy> a barrage of crap> Jay & Silent Bob> sodomized by splintered 2x4 chock-full of rusty nails> Jersey Girl.

Will(iam), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Dogma was absolute shite, if you ask me. Alanis Morisette as god? Now that's ironic!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I just said that, by the way.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

J&SBSB > Chasing Amy >>>>> Clerks animated series > Dogma > Clerks > Mallrats

a banana (alanbanana), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Mallrats is the worst. The acting and editing is so bad in some of that movie - Jason London and Jason Lee seem to be reading cue cards to someone off-screen much of the time. Clerks only has one funny (and admittedly childish) gag, the list of porn titles in front of the little kid.

Dogma's kind of forgettable, but had some funny stuff (and Alanis is good as God), J&SB is completely forgettable and Chasing Amy is the only one he's done that's worth watching more than once.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

'So somethin' like Clerks> Mallrats> Dogma> Chasing Amy> a barrage of crap> Jay & Silent Bob> sodomized by splintered 2x4 chock-full of rusty nails> Jersey Girl'

Where does 'Vulgar' fit in this scheme?

dave q (listerine), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Smith is like an avatar for everything I hate about nerds

ade (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

I like Mallrats a lot. I think the amateurishness works in its favor more than any of the others, possibly. Also, Jason Lee.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

there's this dvd i saw called 'an evening with kevin smith'. on the cover is a photo of a man dressed as an overweight 14-year-old with unusually poor taste in leisurewear. surely the least enticing title/cover image combo of all time.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Dogma was absolute shite, if you ask me. Alanis Morisette as god? Now that's ironic!

wait isn't that the whole idea?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I thought Clerks was the funniest movie in the history of funny movies (when I was a stoned teenager).

Fast forward, what, 10 years? I thought the dialogue was annoying and the acting was plain terrible. But even now, to me, the funny out weights the bad. That whole "going down on yourself" conversation is fucking hilarious. So here's my order of goodness:

the Clerks animated episode where Jay sues Dante > Clerks > Jay & Silent Bob (if you watch the outakes) > the rest of the Clerks animated series > Mallrats > Chasing Amy > bleugh.. who cares the rest is complete garbage

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

animated series..wtf?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

The best part of the animated series was the part where they run out of money and the rest of the programme is animated and written by a Korean sweat-shop animation studio.

Didn't it get pulled before it was actually broadcast?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Ya - that was the one where Jay sues 'em.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I think two episodes were shown; the second episode and the Court Case/Korean Animators one. I quite liked the series, though in hindsight, it was obvious that it wasn't going to last very long (a joke is set up in ep 2 that doesn't get a pay-off until ep 5, and the final episode, while amusing, is a twenty-minute homage to 'Duck Amuck', which was probably taking things too far).

I do have a soft spot for Mallrats, even though it is very amateurish. And I respect Smith for standing up to the Weinsteins over Chasing Amy. But J&SB isn't very good at all (and steals a big part of its plot from Smith's earlier comic series, which was annoying). I haven't braved Jersey Girl yet, although all reports are that it's very bad indeed...

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

We vote for ... BIG AMERICAN PARTY!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I can still plunk in Mallrats and laugh. Clerks I can't. Watching these people spew far too much 'clever' dialogue to get to a simple vulgar point had its charms, but those charms have now been lost. The smugness of the characters, from Caitlin down to every single customer, wears thin fast. And the recurring "I'm not supposed to be here today" joke comes off as pathetic whining.

Isn't Smith planning a modern day sequel to Clerks? True sign of desperation.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I have a gut reaction to Kevin Smith. He's a bad director, he's a bad actor, he's an intolerable, self-important blowhard who thinks someone made him king geek of all time, he's all that is wrong with independent film, and I really want him to go away forever. He's not interesting, not insightful, not even competent.

Did he? I thought they were all buddy-buddy for this one.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone read the Daredevil issues that Smith wrote? Am I getting confused here?

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, admittedly, this is from Smith himself, but: Miramax wanted Amy to be a multi-million-dollar picture starring Drew Barrymore and David Schwimmer. When Smith told them that he didn't think those two actors would be right for the film, they withdrew most of the funding, leaving Smith with just $250,000, believing that he'd back down. Instead, he went ahead and made it with that budget. Then it did quite well (at least critically), and they were all friendly again.

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Wow. A creepy, sexist, clueless, boys-club piece of shit for $250,000. I'm blown the fuck away.

i saw clerks when it came out, and i was a teenager. i guess i was too young to actually get the jokes, so i never thought it was funny. in fact, i found it to be overrated, kind of like "napoleon dynamite" these days.

then i saw it on IFC a month ago and realized it was a lot better than i thought. and i got the jokes this time around. so... i guess its not great but it could be a lot worse.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm in the process of ripping tracks from a clutch of compact discs that I'm selling to SecondSpin.com. Among them was the soundtrack to Clerks, and it seems the ONLY tracks on it I'm interested in are the snippets of dialogue from the film.

Actually, the whole animated Clerks series is worth renting. The episode where they get trapped in the cooler is the funniest thing Smith has ever touched.

The movies, I have no urge to see again.

Smith's Marvel comics writing is indirectly responsible for Ben Affleck being cast as Daredevil. (I liked the performance, so that's a neutral statement.) The one Smith Daredevil issue I read was pointlessly racist: The Arab terrorists aren't just evil, they smell bad, too. But maybe it got better after that.

Smith's Clerks costar Jeff Anderson made his own crappy movie, Now You Know:

There was a doc about the making of Clerks on IFC a couple weeks ago - it's probably included in the Clerks X boxset. It's an interesting, albeit self-serving, doc, starting w/ KS & his high school comedy troupe, then learning about Indie Film Magic, then going to film school, then writing the script, then maxing out his credit cards, then having EVERY DAMN THING fall right (so-and-so at this festival knows so-and-so who writes for VV who's respected enough for so-and-so to take notice of her Clerks review and take KS under his wing to sell the film etc etc.) so Clerks gets into the hands of Miramax employees, and ends w/ Miramax employees hectoring (& finally convincing) Harvey W. into distributing the film & Kevin Smith becoming the furball we all know & "love".

After it finished, there was an ad for the Jersey Girl DVD at the end that's a quaint li'l microcosm of his career (to this point) - KS shows pictures of his wife, says that it's hard to keep a hot wife if you ain't making the big $$$, so please please please buy my DVD so's I can hold onto my hot wife. Way to pitch to your target demo, Kevin.

I REALLY wish he'd get away from the ViewAskewVerse stuff. Haven't seen Jersey Girl, but will rep for everything [except Mallrats] [& even that, WTF] if forced to, and with HUGE caveats attached in all cases.

I love Clerks. I haven't seen it in 3 or 4 years, but I remember still adoring it the last time I saw it... I felt like it still kind of captured the lameness of being a teenager in NJ pretty well. I don't particularly like any of his other films, though- Mallrats I've never sat all the way through, Chasing Amy drives me nuts, and I think the others are just dumb. But Clerks is kind of this cute little sarcastic masterpiece to me.

also: being from new jersey [my dad's restaurant is a hop skip and a jump away from leonardo!], i relate to these films on some level. i always had a crush on the randall-type dudes as a teenager but wound up with the dante characters.

I just think someone needs to remind Smith that film is a visual medium. Show me what's happening for fuck's sake. Don't just have your characters talk about it for two hours. That's called a play, you asshat.

That said, I don't think I'd like any theatre penned and directed by Smith either.

Clerks is probably the only one I can handle because the 16mm black and white and the shitty acting make it just charming enough to get away with not being the best writing in the world. Chasing Amy, on the other hand... Where do I start?... What a fucking turd.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Dante looks, in that picture, like Milton in Office Space.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Having seen Clerks more recently, I found it frustrating. The characters are so two-dimensional, the dialogue is just annoying. Sure, there are people who do talk like this, and in some superficial ways the characters were well drawn, but who cares? I don't want to watch a couple of losers fuck around all day. My life is boring enough as it is.

Sure, it's boring because by now we've seen it done a billion times. But this kind of thing was really popular in 1994 because people just sitting around and talking bullshit for hours (Beavis and Butthead, Pulp Fiction spring to mind) hadn't really been done much before in tv comedy. Friends came soon after and automatically vapourised the genre, turning dumb teenagers sitting around talking and smoking pot, into upscale workshy dinosaur zoologists and lawyers drinking coffee and trying to get off with each other. The nineties totally ended in 1994.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Pulp Fiction is also a piece of shit, though. Not so much because there's too much talking, but for the same reason most of Tarrantino's films are shit. He tries too fucking hard as a writer, and his writing oozes ego in a way that, on a good day, makes me feel bad for the guy and, on a bad day, makes me want to punch him in the neck.

If you've been lucky enough to see him give his comments on the deleted scenes that are tacked onto the VHS version of Pulp Fiction, you'll hear him say that he cut one of the scenes because the writing "sounded too much like someone trying to write like [Tarrantino]." Well, duh, Quentin. Everything you write sounds like you're trying too hard to write like you. (Excepting R. Dogs of course.)

Remember that Beavis and Butthead episodes actually have stories, often involving them doing more than just sitting around talking. The bits of them simply cracking jokes to videos are short, and the (commonly regarded) best episodes contain more action (see Cornholio).

Also keep in mind that B&B is much more in the sitcom format. Sitcoms have more in common with theatre and the radio play than they do with film. Their shorter length also allows them to get away with being "nothing but talking" without being boring. Whether you're a big fan of Friends or not, it's pretty easy to see that an episode running 90 minutes with no commercials would be boring if the writing and direction was not modified significantly.

http://gawker.com/newly-discovered-super-horny-marsupials-fuck-me-dead-1708370666

According to Phys.org, researchers have discovered two new species of antechinus, a marsupial whose breeding period is characterized by weeks of frenzied, 14-hour fuckfests until the males get so stressed out they literally die.

Lead researcher Dr. Andrew Baker compared the animals’ unusual mating habits to popular HBO fuckfest series Game of Thrones. From ABC Australia:

“There’s orgies of violence and sex and, in antechinus, it happens every year.”

After a few weeks of copulation, the rise in stress hormones causes the male’s immune system to collapse, with the result far from a happy ending.

“They’ll bleed internally, they have ulcers, their fur falls off in patches, sometimes they’re stumbling around blind and still trying to mate,” Dr Baker said.
